Borje Samuelsson Defence Height: 6'7 Weight: 235 lbs Place of Birth: Malmo, Sweden Borje may be a VHLM draftee, but what he is most proud of is probably his journey to the league. Born on February 17, 1995, in Malmo, Sweden, Borje was the runt of the family. Always the smallest among his friends, he took it his stature in stride. Around the age of five, he started to gain an interest in soccer and hockey. As a high school freshman, Borje stood a mere 5'4 and weighed 144lbs. He decided that he wanted to focus more on hockey and left the soccer scene. Little did he know, that could have been the best decision of his life. He tried out for the school's varsity hockey team and struggled throughout the tryouts. The coaches were very impressed with the passion that Borje showed and offered him a spot on the roster. He started out on the fourth line and worked diligently to improve his position on the team. Borge played all throughout high school and by the twelfth grade, he stood 6'6 and weighed a solid 200lbs. He captained the team during his junior and senior years, and led them to the city championships. He set his sights out to the University of Alberta and began his studies in life sciences. He decided to try out as a walk on for the school's hockey team. He made the team, without an issue. The coaches were so impressed with the young Borje that they called the managerial team from the Edmonton Oil Kings to watch Samuelsson during practice. The head coach of the Oil Kings invited Borje to play for the WHL team. He stood out on the ice in every game. Not only was he a beast of a teen, standing at 6'7 and weighing over 230 lbs. He was a pivotal player in his rookie season and helped the team become the strongest in the league. Borje had proven himself to be a great two-way defender. He would only last one season in the WHL, however, as he decided to move to the VHLM the following season. He can one day be a very reliable two-way defender in the VHL. Pros 1. Skating - As a young child, Borje had to learn how to play hockey with much bigger opponents. He did not hit his growth spurt until his high school years. As a result of this, he focused much of his time on his footwork. He now possesses an explosive stride and can skate backwards faster than some can skate forwards. He could very easily start a skating clinic. 2. Defence - Borje is very good at using his 6'6 frame against opposing forwards. He is fearless when it comes to blocking shots. He has earned a reputation as one of the best shot blockers in every league he's entered. Borje also enjoys taking part in the physical side of the game. He is able to drive his shoulders into an opponent with thunderous power. Every forward needs to keep sure they have an eye on Samuelsson when he is on the ice, or the consequences could be dire. 3. Passing - Samuelsson has a very strong passion for creating plays. He is often flashy and loves to have the puck on his stick. He can often be seen skating through an entire team and then laying off the last second pass, leading to a goal. He also has pinpoint accuracy when sending forwards on a breakaway with a quick breakout pass. He is improving this part of his game everyday and could be an amazing powerplay specialist in the VHL. Cons 1. Shyness - Borje is known as a very timid person when he starts on a new team. It takes him a while to get used to his surroundings and get comfortable. It's unclear how this will affect him in the VHLM, and later the VHL. He showed be kept an eye on, or there's a chance that his growth may be stunned early. 2. Scoring - Samuelsson was able to score in his younger playing days. However, that skill did not follow him in his later years. In the WHL, he only managed to score two goals in his rookie season. It should be noted that he comes with a red flag when shooting the puck. 3. Commitment - The biggest red flag that Samuelsson comes with isn't his scoring. It's his commitment. He is known to skip out on practices and training sessions, so that he can go out and spend time with friends or going to parties. Previously, he was able to succeed with his natural talent. Only time will tell if his lack of work ethic will catch up with him.
