  8. Nicklas Karlsson has been named as one of the alternate captains alongside defensive partner Jaime Hill for the Bern Royals in his rookie season in the VHLM. The Royals obviously liked what they saw with their 3rd round pick and Karlsson will look to play a big part in the organization's future. He has been working hard to get ready for the start of the season and the team's top brass apparently liked what he brought to the locker room in his work ethic as they look to integrate their youth into more important roles. Karlsson had a good showing in a hot start for the Royals as they found themselves with a 2-0 record after day one. With the new "A" on his jersey, Karlsson picked up an assist in each game and has looked comfortable playing with Hill and learning from the more experienced veteran who has been off to a hot start as well.
  9. Nicklas Karlsson Born: Sweden Birthday: May 5, 1996 Position: D Shoots: Right Height: 6'0" Weight: 185 lbs Number: 4 History Nicklas Karlsson from Sweden is young defenseman hoping to be drafted in the upcoming VHLM Dispersal Draft. He was born in Sweden and played with Frolunda of the Swedish J20 SuperElit league. Playstyle: Karlsson is a two-way defenseman who plays with more of an offensive focus at the moment but shows potential and a willingness to improve on his defensive game. He has an excellent hockey sense and plays with a calm and cool demeanor especially on the powerplay. He loves to score and set up his teammates and has developed an expertise at directing a powerplay. Karlsson knows how to get the puck on net to go with his ability to deliver good passes. He is a smooth and agile skater with a rocket of a shot and is not afraid to play a physical game despite his size. He's known to lay out a few big hits when he sees the opportunity to and has been on the receiving end of a few highlight hits himself. Strengths: Karlsson uses his powerful shot extremely accurately as he consistently gets his shot through to the net even with traffic in front. To open up his shot he threatens defenses with his ability to deliver accurate passes setting his teammates and forcing defenses to respect his shot on top of his passing ability. He knows how important it is to get his shot through as a shot block could lead to a chance the other way while getting even a weak shot through can allow for a deflection or a rebound opportunity. He is a strong skater and can catch most opponents on the break even when he is caught out of position, which does happen a bit too often. He has the ability to bring the puck up the ice on his own but you don't see him as the primary puck handler too often. Weaknesses: He definitely could use some work on his defensive positioning and could use a good coach to teach him the ins and outs of VHL defensive schemes but he has a high level of competitiveness and the work ethic to go with it. However, in contrast to his cool and confident offensive game, he can be prone to making the wrong decisions in the defensive zone such as trying to do too much and make the difficult stretch pass when there is the safer opportunity to just clear off the boards. He also needs to work on his strength and conditioning more if wants to make an impact playing important minutes in the VHL. Conclusion: Nicklas Karlsson is an exciting prospect and could be an impact player on the powerplay of a team's blue-line. He brings an innate ability to score and put up points but needs to work to become the two-way defenseman that he aspires to be. We'll see how his career develops but we see him being a potential top 4 defenseman in the VHL.
