Fun fact, Alexander Beketov who the assist award is named after had max scoring. Max scoring doesn’t mean a player can’t pass. People have gotten so used to crying meta for anything they dislike that they’ve forgotten what it even means.

Saskatoon and Houston are both 1 game away from the finals, will we see them meet each other tomorrow or will Mexico and / or Philly mount a comeback and force game 7?

Welcome to the VHL, victoria! We're happy to have you. You should have received a PM with some more detailed information, but to get started quickly you will want to head over to the "How to Create a Player" topic. That topic will offer you detailed information about how to use the VHL Portal to create your player and get you started. We also highly recommend joining the VHL Discord where there is a channel dedicated to helping new members with any questions that they may have about the league or improving their player. Once your player is made VHLM General Managers will be in touch with you about joining their teams. In the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions you have here or in your create-a-player thread. We're happy to have you in the community and we hope you stick around!

I’m going to go ahead and say this cannot be claimed as VHL related or an original work given that it is the discord logo for the EASHL league that can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/EASHL/comments/tcz52x/best_xbox_one_old_gen_3s_league/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Edit: I only just noticed this is from back in December so maybe I’m wrong and they stole it from you, hard to say. Care to explain?

Mexico roared back last night while Philly lost some ground. Will we see our first finalist tonight?
-
Very possible. I wouldn’t want to change too much all at once without seeing how things play out.
-
It was also the intention when we put the VHLE in place, returning the league to its “roots” of ~11 players per team. TBH as much as GM’s will kill me for saying it I wonder if the cap shouldn’t be decreased. Being able to afford to ice a 3 line team just takes more talent away from the pool which leads to more teams being stacked while others are totally empty.
-
I question that every single time I go to put waivers on teams. How did we manage no location earlier alphabetically than H?

Mexico finds themselves in a hole, can they crawl back? Will anyone take control between Philly and Saskatoon? Let's find out.

And it got action from the league. Action does not mean punishments. We put a system in place to fix the problem. What you are asking is for us to establish and preemptively ban exploits that we don’t know exist; that’s not a reasonable thing to do which is why I say that it smiths to just banning certain builds which we have no interest in doing. With the mindset of the current meta it’s easy to say “well obviously X is exploitative” but that’s not the case. 40 seasons ago no one knew anything about the current meta problems so why would they have batted at eye at someone with 40 passing? It just would have seemed like one of those “silly builds” that people try. We can’t realistically predict what is just something silly and what is something problematic until we see it in action. If we see something that’s a problem we’ll adjust the ratios to make it impossible but we aren’t going to punish people for building as they please and within the rules.

What a dramatic first round! On to round 2 shall we?
-
1. I assume that’s from SHL? We are running a completely different sim engine version with very different TPE levels and sliders so suffice to say that things don’t work the same way; they never have. I am curious though, we’re they just discussing our change or what? 2. Those builds aren’t even possible I don’t believe with the hybrid system, passing certainly isn’t unless you wanna cap scoring at like 60. Like I said, if something becomes a problem we have the bones now so we can just tweak ratios. 3. But we offered the freedom to do that, that’s the whole idea. You are free to build as you please. Why should the league dictate that you need to put points into everything or face punishment? That’s not how it works. Yes, the meta was broken, but it wasn’t illegal. We aren’t going to punish someone for breaking a non-rule (I’m sure you’d be equally pissed if we did) and we aren’t going to write rules based exclusively around removing oriole’s build freedom based off theories. Again, if something actually breaks we can fix it but why punish those that found something optimal that was missed? They didn’t do anything inherently wrong even if it is annoying and that’s coming from someone who has lost back to back finals.
-
1. What exactly do you envision low skating to do that would break anything? Do you remotely have any proof of this? 2. Meta just means optimal, there’s always a build that’s the most optimal. The difference is whether or not that optimal build completely breaks the engine or not. If it doesn’t I couldn’t care less whether someone finds something optimal or not. If it does we’ll adjust the ratios so that it’s fixed. We have the systems in place now. 3. Yes, it is too much to ask for people to be pu is he’s because of using a specific build. Whether you like it or not we are not in the business of policing every single thing people choose to do with their player. If we got that far we would basically be at a point of just saying “here’s your chosen build, go watch some RNG” because all the choice would be removed.

71 and then 85 shots against, Jesus not expecting much out of me are we? Still, especially with these shot totals, it’s nice to see a tied series.

Only Philly and Vegas remain, game 7 starts now!

FWIW @Spartan and I ran the numbers and you can get to 75 Checking without a single point into fighting if you so choose. To get above that you need a bit of fighting but it’s a minor amount. For example you can get checking to 90 without needing to max any hybrid attribute (nothing above 90) and your fighting would only be 62. To me that’s not unreasonable for having such a high checking stat. This is ultimately the balance: so you spend a lot of TPE to avoid fighting or do you spend less and get more checking out of it BUT you have the trade off of having a bit of fighting. The system is designed around these trade offs because it allows for different choices and builds instead of just dumping exactly the amount you want into X and completely ignoring Y. You wanna be a goon, sometimes that means dropping the gloves.
-
I hate to sound harsh but tbh that’s not actually steep at all. For example I tested Lahtinen’s build and it took over 1400 TPA compared to like 980. You’ve got probably one of the cheaper changes You did touch on the reasoning at the end here though, everyone will drop. If everyone gets worse, no one gets worse. Yes, TPE is worth less than it used to be, that’s inevitable. When you consider that most people could have a complete and top line ready build by 400 and a completely dominant build by 800 there needed to be a change. I implore you to not consider what was but rather what is. That you used to be able to max out every important stat in 900 TPE is meaningless because that not only broke the engine hard but was also way too easy to achieve. We aren’t punishing people for builds of others, we are eliminating the broken build while offering tools to vary builds up. Arguably something crazy like yours is getting easier. Yes, it’s more TPE but the increase is significantly less than what many builds would need so in relation to everyone else it’s no more difficult if that makes sense. Everything is relative. As for the fighting thing: the idea behind putting fighting in with checking was that a heavy hitting goon type player is likely also going to be one that gets into fights. You can get it into a totally reasonable amount without touching fighting and ultimately we can’t give every attribute it’s own or else we remove all the benefit of the hybrids. Fighting is, however, a very specific sub-attribute so a solution that we could go for Would be fighting on its own (.36 maybe like passing) and then lower the fighting ratio on grit. I do like it being there because there should always be balance like I said, you can’t just have every attribute on its own and specifically a player aiming for 90+ checking probably would fight on occasion. However the ratio of how much fighting you end up with from that might be too high and could be adjusted.
