Countless articles have analyzed his stats, compared him to the all-time best, and tried to determine where he belongs in the pantheon of legendary defensemen. This article isn’t about that. This is about Skor McFleury’s journey - the highs, the lows, the (many) teams, and the legacy he built along the way. Regardless of where you place him on a list, his story is one worth telling. BEFORE THE VHL The initial scouting reports on Skor McFleury described him as a versatile defenseman who needed refinement. He wasn’t a generational prospect who turned heads, but his versatility, work ethic, and ability to play in all situations made him a coveted player. His rise wasn’t immediate, but his first opportunity in the VHL system came when he signed as a Free Agent with the Mexico City Kings of the VHLM. In the VHLM, he suited up for the Mexico City Kings in Season 85, where he quickly established himself as a key contributor. While his 16 points in 20 games weren’t eye-popping, his strong defensive play and ability to move the puck effectively drew praise from the same analysts who debated whether he had true franchise potential. His brief playoff stint saw him notch 4 points in 11 games, which was another early indication that he could handle the pressure of higher-stake hockey. Unbeknownst to everyone, his next move provided early insight into the overall tone of McFleury’s career. His decision to move to Europe and play in the VHLE raised many questions. Could that be the correct move? Would it impair his development? With the decision to begin playing in Europe, multiple teams heavily courted Skor but ended up choosing between two, Cologne and Geneva. Ultimately, the Swiss team signed him, but incredibly, Cologne traded for him that same off-season, marking his first free-agency decision and trade. McFleury’s development trajectory wasn’t one of immediate superstardom. Still, his time in the VHLE was a real turning point when he took on a top-pairing role for the Cologne Express in S86. This was the season he developed from a promising prospect into a legitimate VHL-caliber defenseman. His 74 points in 72 games and a +44 plus/minus solidified his reputation as a two-way force. Despite Cologne’s early playoff exit, McFleury had proven what he needed to. While the word could be interpreted in many different ways, depending on the subject, you can take it by what it truly means, ups and downs. Skor's VHL career was much like a thrilling rollercoaster. Entertaining and enthusiastic, providing fans around the league with a great player who contributed significantly to nearly a third of the league's teams. Incredibly, he never left a fanbase with a sour taste in their mouth. McFleury's VHL career started in S87 with the Riga Reign. Like most rookies, his first season was about adjusting to the pace of the league. Without an extra season in the developmental leagues, his role was limited, and the numbers reflected that, with just 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) in 72 games. It wasn't a standout rookie season, but his defensive contributions stood out, showing signs of a trademark ability of his game. Riga's efforts put them in the playoffs, barely edging the Predators by one point. Season 88 saw an increase in responsibility for the second-year player. McFleury played a more prominent role, finishing with 55 points (9 goals, 46 assists) while keeping his active defensive posture. The young Skor's production wasn't elite yet, but it was clear that he was developing into a reliable two-way presence. Riga made the playoffs once again with another wildcard berth. While the Reign made the playoffs in both seasons, deep runs weren't in the cards, and the team lost in the first round in S87 and the wildcard round in S88. McFleury managed seven points across two post-seasons, which raised questions about how he and the team could handle playoff hockey and contend for the Continental Cup. Change and Recognition. S89 marked the first turning point in McFleury's VHL career when he was suddenly traded to the HC Davos Dynamo. It was a major trade that transformed the VHL landscape involving a third team, the D.C. Dragons. Alongside McFleury, two other players were involved and found new teams. His offensive game took another step forward, and he posted 83 points (22 goals, 61 assists) in 72 games, his best season to date, in S89. His defensive contributions remained strong, with 179 blocked shots and 186 hits. More importantly, Davos was a legitimate contender, finishing with the third-best record of the regular season. The run would continue for Davos, and the season ended with McFleury winning his first Continental Cup. That was the first championship for Davos in almost thirty seasons, and it cemented that group in history. In 16 playoff games, he scored 18 points, including 14 from assists, making him the team's top passer and highlighting his role as a key player, now on a championship team. S90 was even better. McFleury had a career year, posting 96 points (25 goals, 71 assists) and helping Davos win the Victory Cup. His performance earned him his first All-VHL First Team selection and the Alexander Valiq Trophy for the league's best offensive defenseman. He was now officially among the best blueliners in the game. Davos looked primed for another deep playoff run, but despite McFleury's 14 points in 11 games, they fell short. A dominant regular season didn't translate to another championship, leaving unfinished business on the table. Adrift. S91 came, and the Dynamo were only getting better without McFleury. The Swiss team acquired prolific Center Leandro Goncalves, who had one of his best seasons in Davos, but there wasn't enough room for everyone. It seemed like the last dance for the team, but it would happen without Skor. They went on to win the Victory Cup again and left the playoffs without a win. Skor was traded to the Malmo Nighthawks on another blockbuster and had another strong individual season, but his production fell. While McFleury’s play was elite, Malmö struggled and lost the wildcard round against the lower-rated Titans. As his contract was ending, and with 89 points (22 goals, 67 assists), 224 hits, and 142 blocked shots, Skor was intent on reaching Free Agency - but he didn't. After a bad season, Calgary was on the hunt. They were hunting for the elusive championship since the legendary Swiss Daniel Janser retired. Calgary traded a future 1st rounder (11th OA in S93) in a sign & trade with Malmo that had the defenseman sign a three-season contract with the Albertan team. McFleury was again on the move. While the Wranglers weren’t title contenders in S91, that changed in S92, getting 1st-seed in the NA conference and the second-best regular season record overall behind only one team - the Malmo Nighthawks. Skor maintained his high level of play, offensively recording 71 points (18 goals, 53 assists) and defensively 145 blocked shots and 184 hits. Calgary made the playoffs, but like his previous stop, the run was short-lived. McFleury managed three points in six games before Calgary was eliminated by the wildcard round-winning team. By now, McFleury had established himself as one of the league’s premier defensemen, but team success had been elusive since his Davos days, and individually, it seemed like he felt he wasn't put in the best place to succeed. Peak. One season after signing a three-season deal with Calgary, with an NTC, Skor asked for a trade. It seemed like Calgary was in limbo between contending and rebuilding, and McFleury had made his decision. Skor was traded, and the rebuilding period for the Wranglers was just starting. The trade included multiple players and assets, which gave Calgary the best opportunity to rebuild and Prague, Skor's new home, the best chances to win now. In S93, McFleury was at his absolute best. Playing for the Prague Phantoms, he put up 102 points (24 goals, 78 assists), his highest career total. His two-way dominance was undeniable, with 227 blocked shots, 263 hits, and a +39 plus/minus. He wasn’t just an elite offensive defenseman, he was controlling every aspect of the game. His efforts were rewarded with multiple accolades, including All-VHL First Team, the Alexander Valiq Trophy (Best Offensive Defenseman), the Jake Wylde Trophy (Best Defensive Defenseman), and the Sterling Labatte Trophy (Best Overall Defenseman). Despite his dominance, the Phantoms were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, managing just five games. McFleury contributed four points, but Prague wasn’t ready to compete for a title, and most of its players were about to retire. Last Dance. McFleury had just claimed his place in the Hall of Fame but still had fuel in the tank, and with a pending player option on the table, Prague had to move the player. After so much capital invested, Prague let the player leave for Davos for a 2nd round selection. In Davos, Skor picked up his option for the S94 and extended for S95 but was then moved back to Riga for future assets. New Riga GM Alexandre Leduc was looking to win and found his superstar defenseman, with Davos eagerly collecting much more than they had spent to bring Skor back to Switzerland. Back in Latvia, McFleury didn’t reach the same point total as the previous season, but he still had an elite year with 98 points (35 goals, 63 assists), leading to another All-VHL First Team selection, another Alexander Valiq Trophy, and a second Sterling Labatte Trophy. Riga had some success in the playoffs but lost in the conference finals to the Moscow Menace, who were about to win their first Continental under GM Euron Leonidas. I'll be honest - I've been struggling here. Life has been more stressful lately, leaving me with less time and energy to fully engage in the simulation world. As that time decreases so does the experience's immersion, which can make it more difficult to stay motivated throughout those periods. I've continued to earn as much as I possibly can and Maverick started this past season firing on all cylinders, but he hit a wall in the middle of the season and never seemed to come back to his most efficient self. While I agree and know first-hand that your performance doesn't necessarily match your skill at all times, it does get increasingly difficult to find a reason to do it. Why put in the effort to maximize earnings, and create the best player you can when, in the end, it doesn't really matter? It gets increasingly frustrating as a player, but I'm going to double down on the honesty and say the same thing from a General Manager's perspective. Not all teams are created equal, not all teams will have massively efficient builds or superstar players, and not all teams will contend for the title, but, again, it gets difficult to reason with some of the events that happen around the league. I agree with the Old Testament that anyone who makes the playoffs has the opportunity to create their own story, follow their own path, and carve their legacy, but the randomness of the events leading to these endings just seems to keep increasing season after season. I am not saying I have the answer to these questions. Questions I believe are problems that we need to address as a league and as a community but certainly they have to be approached somehow because I believe they will lead to larger issues. Maverick is now heading into his prime and I'm not sure what I'll do. My feeling though is what worries me the most because surely, whatever I decide upon, it won't matter. I want to win a Continental again, I want Maverick to play like the quality player he is and have his contributions showing for it. At 1200 TPA, playing for a juggernaut, he has faltered to a ~900 TPA playing for a midfield squad. At 1366 TPA, playing for a contender, he will falter to a ~900 TPA playing for a midfield squad. At 1490 TPA, playing for a contender, he will falter to a ~900 TPA playing for a midfield squad. How can I justify grinding for a max build of 1490 TPA when I see no meaningful returns? Especially, when that effort won't help nudge the probabilities my team wins the championship. Projecting a career TPE earnings over 2300 is nice, but when it won't help you achieve your goals, why does it even matter? Anyway, I've been more excited about the league in the past. We strive for balance in a way that competitiveness seems forgotten. I'll continue to be immersed in this community for as long as there are great people around, but my involvement as a player and General Manager will be increasingly tied to these variables.
