The Victory Cup has been the symbol of VHL status and prestige since the beginning when the Calgary Wranglers were the best team in the league in S1 with a record of 69-3-0. The Wranglers have since gone on to win the Victory Cup a league-leading 12 times (as of S89) with the Toronto Legion right behind them with 11 and Vancouver and Seattle with 10. Over the past 10 seasons, the Victory Cup has been won by five different teams with five different winners from S85-S89 (Warsaw, Calgary, Vancouver, Prague and Moscow) but earlier on it was dominated by some good teams in Moscow (S83-S84) and Vancouver (S80-S82). Obviously, being the best team over 72 games would enhance your chances at winning a championship but, as has shown in many leagues including the VHL time and time again, a championship is never guaranteed. Vancouver was the last franchise to win the Victory Cup and Continental Cup in the same season when they accomplished the feat a league record three consecutive times in that S80-S82 period. The Malmo Nighthawks also accomplished this in S79, the season before Vancouver’s run. But, that double pinnacle is rare. Case in point: the only other time the league’s best team also won the Continental Cup in four consecutive seasons was from S45-S48 when Helsinki won both trophies back-to-back, followed by New York and then Toronto. In fact, the past seven seasons (S83-S89) have been the longest stretch in VHL history between double Cup wins. How will this season’s Victory Cup winner fare in the playoffs? Who’s to know? But, first, let’s meet the contenders:

    Los Angeles Stars: 30-8-1, 61 points, 1st
    Last Victory Cup: Never won
    Remaining Schedule (1=Hard, 16=Easy): 14

The Stars have slowly been building into a contender over the last three seasons, developing drafted talents like centers Todd Cooke @KRZY, Sunglasses Joyo @JetsGoalie101, defenseman Callum Murray @Berocka and goaltender Art Vandelay @Gustav . A couple of deft trades in the off-season to bring onboard forwards Napoleon Dynamite @thadthrasher, Svatopluk Puk @Otaznik, and burgeoning blueliner Elias Lampi @Pifferfish and you have the makings of a top team in the league. Cooke currently leads the VHL in scoring by a large margin with Dynamite tied for fourth while they are posting the two best plus/minus marks in the league. Cooke and Lampi are 2nd and T-5th in assists and Puk leads the league with three hat tricks. Vandelay leads the league with 30 wins as is tied for the lead in GAA and shutouts. What has the Stars on top though is their dominance in the shoot out. They have won all nine shoot outs they’ve taken part in this season – thanks to Vandelay. He has been the busiest and the best goalie in one-on-one, stopping all but one of the 32 shots he’s faced! No Star has more than 3 shootout goals but they don’t really need more. LA has the easiest schedule remaining out of the teams mentioned here so they’ll be a safe bet to continue their winning ways and perhaps win the franchise’s first Victory Cup.

    Prague Phantoms: 28-8-4, 60 points, 2nd
    Last Victory Cup: S88
    Remaining Schedule: 1

One of the strongest teams in Europe for a while now, Prague is the most recent of this group to have led the league in points having won the franchise’s first Victory Cup in S88. They are a veteran-laden team with time running out for Phantom lifers Jason Argos @Insypher and Perry Laperriere @KaleebtheMighty but last season’s MVP John Jameson @Frank along with Fred Hampton @TownBizness are again among the league’s top scorers. Special teams have also been a strength as Prague boasts the VHL’s best penalty kill and second-ranked power play. But the real story for the Phantoms has been the breakout play of goaltender Matt Murdock @Acydburn. Currently 1st among starters in SV%, 3rd in wins, and 4th in GAA, Prague may only go as far as Murdock takes them as the experienced Phantoms push through another long season hoping their physical style aligns with their Cup aspirations. They only play the three worst teams (Warsaw, Calgary, New York) once each in their remaining games while playing the other five teams on this list 15 times so keeping this pace may prove difficult.

    Toronto Legion: 24-6-9, 57 points, 3rd
    Last Victory Cup: S67
    Remaining Schedule: 9

Following a similar path to Los Angeles, if not steeper, the Toronto Legion banked on their collection of high draft picks from the last few seasons and pushed all the chips onto the table making a deal for superstars forwards Ronan Lavelle @Arce and Tomas Sogaard @Brandon and then signing defenseman Siyan Vasilievich @badcolethetitan. Although it took a while for the new-look Legion to gel, captain Mac Atlas @v.2  broke out and young stars Jimi Jaks @kelvi and Bobby Bob @Baby Boomer helped lead a balanced attack while the team rounded into form. With one of the best young netminding duos in Joel Castle @animal74 (who is currently tied for the best GAA lead among starters) and Evan Bihler @Eb14 and strong contributions from veterans Jimmy MacElroy @Xflexz, Dens Oden @Snussu and rookie Montgomery Burns @LastOneUp, the Legion have been right with LA all season. But where LA excels in shootouts, Toronto abhors them as the Legion hold a 1-8 record in the contests. Although having a decent schedule down the stretch, Toronto still plays Los Angeles four times and Prague three times still this season in what may determine the points race.

    D.C. Dragons: 27-10-2, 56 points, 4th
    Last Victory Cup: Never won
    Remaining Schedule: 8

On paper, the Dragons aren’t the most talented team, but they are finding ways to win and score – a lot. The highest-scoring team in the league is being led offensively by off-season acquisition forwards Jason @Jason kranz and Vincent Laroche-Gagnier @vincentlg2007 who are second and third in league scoring and first and second in goals respectively, and well-travelled defenseman Ryuji Sakamoto @der meister who surprisingly leads the league in assists and, consequently, all VHL defensemen in scoring after posting over a point-per-game for the first time in his career. D.C. is his seventh team in five seasons and was brought in to help guide the Dragons’ recent 1st round picks on the blueline Mark Calaway @Beketov, Ben Lass @dustywilson22 (5th in rookie scoring), and Eric Queefson @twists. With seven players at double-digits in goals, the Dragons can score in bunches and on the league’s 3rd -best power play. But can Dragon goaltending legend Bubbles Utonium @fishy, who has been playing more like the Continental Cup winner from S85 than the declining veteran of the last couple of seasons, keep up his strong play in his final season? Four more games against the Stars and three versus Davos will test the Dragons’ mettle.

D.C. and Vancouver will be battling for a playoff spot and perhaps a Victory Cup.

    HC Davos Dynamo: 24-12-2, 51 points, 5th
    Last Victory Cup: S37
    Remaining Schedule: 11

Coming off of their first Continental Cup in nearly 30 seasons, and with considerable departures, people would not have been surprised if Davos had simply taken a slight step back this season. But with the addition of a couple of solid veteran forwards, DB III @wcatsand Vasile Lamb @dlamb, Davos has been able to essentially run it back with a majority of their S89 roster. Unlike most other teams, Davos has been built from the net out with Lachlan Summers @kirbithan, S88’s Rookie of the Year, and a trio of young (one of which at heart) two-way defensemen (David Jokinen @Ahma, Jake Thunder @Thunder, and Skor McFleury @Alex) who lead the attack from the back end. McFleury and Thunder, last seasons’ playoff MVP and assist leader in S88, lead the team in scoring but have a lot of help from Davos veterans Pete Mitchell @Crstats23, James Teekirque @Mongoose87, and Alfred Champagne @Anthique. Recently the defensive powerhouse has gone 9-2-1 in their past 12 games in order to close the gap on the top teams in the league. Overall, Davos has done well despite only a +15 goal differential  that is in large part due to their inability to stay out of the penalty box, as they are currently 2nd in the league with just shy of 500 PIMs. Aided though by their Top-5 ranked special teams, it should be interesting to see if Davos can keep up their recent play and end the longest active Victory Cup drought.

    Vancouver Wolves: 24-12-2, 50 points, 6th
    Last Victory Cup: S87
    Remaining Schedule: 12

After finishing second in the North American Conference last season, the Wolves did a little shuffling in the off-season seeing Nico Pearce @Spartan  retire, changing up the bottom defense pairing and essentially swapping Henry Eagles @Greg_Di for Girts Galvins @Girts. Other than that, S86 Cup holdovers center Dogwood Maple @dogwoodmaple, defenseman Pierre-Emile Bouchard @Gaikoku-hito and goalie Brandt Fuhr @Tate (T-1st in shutouts with four) have gelled nicely with a young core of skilled forwards to help the Wolves rattle off a recently-snapped 9-game win streak put them back in the Cup conversation. Coming over in the Henry Eagles trade, Hockley Mann @Sen leads Vancouver forwards in points with Wann Kerr @VattghernCZ right behind him and leading the Wolves in goals. Oreo McFleury @JB123 has been clutch and sits among league leaders with five game-winning goals. On top of it all, Brian Payne @Scurvy has been his rambunctious self, leading the team in scoring and sits 1st among defensemen in hits, 2nd in scoring and 3rd in goals. Sporting the second-best penalty kill in the VHL and a 5-1 record in shootouts has helped Vancouver stay in the playoff picture in a tough conference. Having almost two-thirds of their remaining games against the bottom seven teams will almost guarantee they make the playoffs and perhaps push for higher.

    2. What is your player’s preferred number?
Personnaly I prefer the #9. I don't care if my player wore the 17 like Anderson do in real life.

    3. For graphics, which NHL player represents your player/who is your preferred player render?
Just have to look at my profile picture and my signature. My boy Josh Anderson!

    4. Which is more crucial to the success of a team: offense or defense?
For success it's defense. In my opinion, it's not even close. But it's way more fun for everyone when there is a lot of goals.

    6. Will you be buying NHL 24?
Until they make it for PC, not gonna happen sadly...

    7. What other sports do you watch other than hockey?
Tennis from time to time. Formula 1 even if it's not a «sport». Super Bowl obviously and the NBA finals.

    8. Have you ever traveled internationally? If so, to what countries?
Not yet, but I wish! Probably going to Europe or Scandinavia first.

Kinda good! Point per game so far, first time in my career that it happen so I'm excited to see what I can do in the long term.

    4. How do you feel about the VHLE contracting down to 6 teams before this season?
Good thing. I've listen to people talking about it so I think it's a good thing for the league in general.

    5. How would your player fare if they had to use a wooden stick in a game?
Not much of a change haha! Skating and giving body check you don't even need a stick :P

    6. Thoughts on Auston Matthews’ extension with the Maple Leafs?
I though it would be a bit less, but he got what he wanted. Now he have to win.

    7. Do you have an unusual or hidden talent?
Not really, I'm a simple guy haha!

    8. If you were an animal, what would it be and why?
Wolf. Can survive alone, but have more fun in a gang.

    1. Triller updated his amazing Continental Cup graphic to include the names of our historic S89 team! Have you seen it, and if so, what are your thoughts?
Of course! Amazing work! Hope we can get another one

    2. How did your player celebrate the Cup win over the course of this offseason?
Bring the Cup to France, not a lot of players are from there so everyone was happy to see. Party hard obviously!

    3. The start of the season brings new expectations! What would you like to see from your player as well as the team?
Get more points haha! Not a good performance offensively last season, and so far it's again the same thing. But the team wins so I'm good.

    5. Are you participating in VHFL or Super Coach?
Super coach only. Try VHLF in the past but sometimes the timing is not good and I don't have time to follow it.

    6. Who is your favorite NHL player currently?
Crosby was always my favorite since he joined the league because I've seen him in junior and he was always the best on the ice.

    7. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Night owl at 100% haha! But that will unfortunately have to change soon when the baby will join us.

I agree with you that Champagne didn't produce offensively as much as I wanted and was expected of him, but at least he was a physical factor in the season and almost a PPG in the playoffs. Maybe with the good players that left in the off-season he will be able to take the next step that is long overdue. I got the worst rank, but I deserve it so no worries, I want him to score as much as you

    1. Welcome, new and returning members of Davos! The offseason is fully underway. How are you feeling about our roster after all of our trades and signings?
I think we will be again one of the best team in the league. Some retirement in our forwards group, but some or ready to take another step (wink wink).

    2. As per tradition, what is your bold prediction for this upcoming season?
    Another Championships for Davos!

    3. What are your thoughts on depreciation?
That's the worst thing in online leagues, but necessary for the longevity of it.

    6. The league turned 16 years old a month ago! What is the key to running a successful sim league?
Create a good environnement on the forum and all the others plateformes. Be open to changes in every form.

    7. Has your favorite NHL team made any notable FA signings this summer?
Pittsburgh got Karlsson from a trade so that's good. They got some depth players like Eller and Smith so they should be able to get back in the playoffs next season.

    8. Do you prefer Spotify or Apple Music?

Feeling great brother! A little bit hungover, but after a victory like this, the emotions are all over the place!

    2. Now that the offseason has properly begun, how would you reflect on your player’s season individually? Is there anything you would’ve wanted to improve on or see from them?
I've improved a lot with my physicality so people begin to respect me. Lot of hits, lot of fights and more block shots than ever. My offensive production take a toll, but we'll get back at it.

    3. Have you listened to the latest Ahmacast yet?
Not yet, but I will probably do it tomorrow. I know it will be legendary and I want the full experience so I will listen to it in one go.

    4. What was a highlight for you this season besides us winning the Cup?
The depth of the team. Five forwards with 20 goals with 2 at 40 and two others having at least 35. The arrival of McFleury to help Thunder in defense really helped us. Can't forget our goalie that played over his head again.

    6. What will you be doing to keep yourself busy this offseason before S90?
Get some sleep, but only after partying with the Cup in France! After that, back to training and this time the offensive will be a priority. With Jones and Leduc leaving the team to retirement, Champagne will have to produce.

    7. A huge three-team trade sent Erik Karlsson to the Pittsburgh Penguins! How do you feel about this bold move from Kyle Dubas?
Kinda happy! Pitts and Mtl are both my teams and they were involved in it haha! Karlsson will help the Big3 in PIT to keep the winning window open. Wish to see him getting the 100 pts again!

F*ck yes! Back to the final again, hope we can get it done this time, we are wayyy due to win!

    2. ProAm signings just opened up! Are you going to participate?
Yup I participate since the beginning (I think?). No reason to not participate haha and my player habitually do very well in the tournament (more than here in the VHL...)

    3. What is one suggestion you would offer to make the offseason more interesting?
More tournament for teams outside of the playoffs or even a IIHF tournament with everyone and include more contries so almost everyone can play.

    6. Were you shocked that Vladimir Tarasenko decided to sign with Ottawa?
Not really. They loose Debrincat so they needed to bring someone else that can help them offensively to get into the playoffs.

Play physical to have the puck more than them and score a lot of goals. The game of hockey is simple haha.

    2. What is your player doing on our bye week right now?
Doing so meditation and yoga. Train the mind to have a balance with the body.

    3. Do you believe the team who wins the Victory Cup is always cursed in the playoffs?
Like the NHL, finishing first in the standing doesn't always mean the playoffs will finish with a win. The Bruins got burn last season...

    4. Predict the NA conference champion!
Seattle was over every other teams in his conference this season, so I predict it will be the same thing during the playoffs.

    6. Do you participate in fantasy sports at all?
Yeah I got a NHL keeper pool. I don't follow other sports enough to have a pool in them.

    8. Debate question incoming: Do you think there are more eyes or legs in the world?
Eyes. Even the blind one have still their eyes. There is a lot of accidents where people lost one or both their legs.

Anthique reacted to Beketov in Happy 16th Birthday VHL!
    Hey VHL @Members!

Old hands of the league have surely been waiting for this but for any youngin’s out there that aren’t aware July 18th, 2007 is the day the VHL opened. That means today marks the league's official 16th birthday. Our little league can officially drive! Fucking wild. Anyway, it’s been an absolute wild time over the past 16 years but we know you all didn't click on this to read about how fucking ancient I am. You came in for the TPE and I intend on delivering it!

To commemorate the league's 16th birthday, we are giving all members a Triples Week, which adds 12 Uncapped TPE to any 6-TPE Point Task (Welfare/Pension/Affiliate PT are not included but as usual if your pay covers your PT that counts), as well as 4 Uncapped TPE. To claim these perks, which naturally add up to 16 Uncapped TPE (aren’t we so clever) all you need to do is post in this thread and then link to that post in your update; that's it! No scavenger hunt, no clues, no catches! Do a PT, make one post, and the sweet TPE is all yours.

That’s not all though! We’re gonna also put everyone who claims this birthday TPE into a draw for even more TPE, we know what you all like after all. At the end of this season we’ll draw for 16 prizes of 10 more uncapped TPE each.

So, to summarize quickly, that's 16 uncapped TPE just for commenting and doing a PT with the possibility of even more later curtesy of the VHL. All you have to do is post in here and you're good to go!

    Notes:
    • This thread will remain open until 11:59PM PST on Monday, July 24th.
    • All claims for the birthday bonus must be made by the end of the playoffs this season.
    • Birthday perks may only be claimed on one player per member (IE if you are re-creating you can't claim them on your current player, re-create, and claim them again, pick one or the other).

    1. Time flies when you’re winning! We are nearing the end of the regular season. What is one word to describe this S89 Davos squad?
Dominant. We are first in the league since like the first week of the season and there is a good chance we will finish the season first.

    2. Are you happy with your player’s performance this season? Did you improve from S88?
Nope and nope haha! I've only been regression since my 51 pts season in S87. But the team is winning so I can't complain. We need to get a Cup though in exchange!

    4. Which NHL player would you say your player is most similar to?
My profile picture, Josh Anderson. Can skate, hit and score (when he want to lol).

    6. The FIFA Women’s World Cup is fast approaching! Who are you rooting for?
Canada did great in the last one and it's my country so can't cheer for somebody else!

    7. What sports do you enjoy watching other than hockey?
Tennis, playoffs basketball and the SuperBowl.

    8. What is your favorite pizza topping?
I try to get as much meat as possible. So bacon, pepperoni, chicken or pulled pork (that's my favorite).
