  2. DIDIER VERHAULT BIOGRAPHY If you were to surf through a history of VHL talents and their nations, Belgium would not likely headline any major category. While respectable VHL talent has emerged from the Flemish-Wallonian nation of Belgium, none would emerge greater than powerhouses like Canada, Russia, and the USA. With one goal in mind, Defenseman Didier Verhault emerges from Belgium with ambitions of bringing glory to his nation, name, and the pride of victory. Didier was not born as a prodigy in any way, despite his family’s ties to localized ice hockey in Belgium. As a child he played organized hockey, traveling from Antwerp, Liege, and a multitude of other rink-cities for tryouts and applications. While Didier showed physical tenacity and a love for the game of ice hockey, many schools and programs declined him due to size concerns. Having projections of below 6 feet, as a Defenseman, it was seen as a major handicap to Didier’s physical game. The Verhault family would not let this discourage them from supporting Didier’s dreams of playing organized ice hockey. Using the publication of his school’s ice hockey team, Didier was invited to a tryout in the capital city, Brussels, to join the Belgian Juniors. This was a dream come true for the Verhault family. While Didier’s father, Danyer, had played ice hockey at a similar level, he was unable to advance his career with the same concerns that caused many organizations to pass up on Didier. The Verhault family had been decently wealthy and comfortable, allowing them to freely support Didier in his journey to play professional hockey. Danyer Verhault, Didier’s father, had once played hockey and had a successful business career in retail for sports equipment for Belgian Junior teams. Including hockey, this meant Didier had easy access to training equipment and gear at a young age, advancing his development past many others of similar level. Didier was able to impress the coaches of the Belgian Juniors of ice hockey, and was able to participate in the team's localized tournaments to hone his skills. Again he impressed, and despite his size he was able to produce positively both defensively and offensively. Verhault’s performance in the Belgian Juniors was his first taste of professional hockey, and it attracted his first scouts from the VHL World Juniors. While Verhault declined to play and decided to stay an extra season in Belgium, his name had found its way on to the paper of many VHL scouts. Another season came and went of the Belgian Juniors, and while Didier improved, he had not shown the jump in talent many had projected for him. This increase in production was also accompanied by being named an Alternate Captain for the Belgian Juniors. Immediately after the end of the Belgian hockey season, Verhaut began searching for additional coaching to jump him into a tier of upper prospects worldwide. This was when Didier met Shaggy Tipton, a former player whose career was shortened by injury, Tipton was willing to teach Didier the many skills he had acquired during his time playing for the Moscow Menace. While he would not be coached under Tipton for long, it provided the jump in skill needed for Didier to relocate to the Americas, with an offer from the Mexico City Kings. Signing as a rookie Free Agent, Didier began his adventure into the VHL, with guidance from the past and ambition towards the future, he looks to leave his mark on the VHL forever.
  3. ASSISTANT TO THE GENERAL MANAGER SHAGGY TIPTON With a vacant Assistant General Manager position remaining open in the VHL, Shaggy Tipton applied for the job. Being inexperienced in terms of management, Helsinki's front office approached his application with cautious optimism, knowing the potential a former player could bring to management. Tipton himself had a career shortened by injuries and a lack of dedication to the Sport, but repurposed himself by becoming a mentor to many young European skaters entering the upcoming drafts. This attracted the attention of some smaller front offices across Europe, mainly small and loosely organized leagues. Tipton was not interested in joining these leagues however, and decided instead to pursue a career in the VHL in a management position. Some would have judged Tipton's stubborn refusal to take lower jobs as too prideful, as positional openings in the VHL were rare, even in their lower leagues. By chance Tipton had been in Europe when the Helsinki Titans announced they were looking for an Assistant General Manager. Unexperienced, but willing to learn the trade, Tipton eagerly applied for the position of Assistant General Manager. Helsinki's General Manager was not known for hiring unexperienced candidates, but Tipton's eagerness and willing to learn helped him ease into the idea of hiring a first time Management staff member. After days of deliberation, Tipton was announced to have been given the position of Assistant to the General Manager. While this was a position below the applied Assistant General Manager, it was a clear pathway into the position and management in general for Tipton. Tipton's skills were advertised as a capable scout, specializing in Defensemen given that was his position of choice during his career years in the VHL. This continues one of the most interesting careers in VHL history, being a two-time Defensive award winner, from being the first in the European League to receive Defensive Recognition in the inaugural season, to a dominant Ryan Sullivan season in the Minors. Being the first Undrafted player to make a VHL roster, and an All-Rookie team at that. While it is a shame that Tipton's playing days were cut short, he can look forward to the prospect of a long career in Management, a career with more longevity for sure.

  6. 1) How do you feel about the hiring of the Assistant to the GM so far? 2) With Helsinki almost certainly eliminated, how are you feeling about this season? 3) What do you think are keys to turning around Helsinki’s on-ice results next season? 4) If you were to choose to be on any other team besides Helsinki, which would it be? 5) Have you ever played organized hockey in your life? 6) Who is your favorite Finnish hockey player if all time?
  7. GAME REVIEW HOUSTON BULLS VS HALIFAX 21ST Although Halifax has maintained a decent standing in the VHLM this season, the entered this match 35 points beneath Houston, who is one of the most capable teams in the VHLM this season. With a core of players such as Severus Targaryen, Raimo Tuominen, Martin Kemp, Walter Fitzroy Jr, Kyle Toms, and more, it is hard to not see them advancing far in the VHLM playoffs. That it not to say their opponents were pushovers however, as Halifax certainly has many capable players on their roster. Jeid Rohnson, Maxim Anisimov, Miroslav, Mikko Borisyuk, Miroslav, and Aurora Skylight are all highly thought of prospects, and some can say Halifax has underperformed this season. 9. DIDIER VERHAULT SCOUTING REPORT NAME: Didier Emmanuel Verhault AGE: 18 BIRTHDAY: June 20th HOMETOWN: Anderlecht, Belgium SHOOTS: Right HEIGHT: 5'11'' WEIGHT: 185LBS PREFERRED NUMBER: 20 POSITION: Defenseman The first thing that jumps off of the paper for Didier Verhault to General Managers of the Victory Hockey League will be his physicality. Despite being a below-average sized Defenseman and player in general, Verhault is an extremely "toolsy" player, his top rated skill being his skating and overall quickness on the Ice. His well-rounded game and complete skating form have led to comparisons to Jaccob Slavin. Verhault is a beautifully complete player, being competent in every phase of the game. It is rare for Verhault to disappear from the play or seem out of place when it comes to high leverage situations. For his size, Verhault has impressive strength and puck retainability for a player of his size, and is often said to play above his size and age level. Another strength of Verhault is his passing. While this can translate into competent playmaking, he is mostly concerned with puck control and transporting the puck safely into the offensive zone, creating scoring opportunities for his team. While Verhault is no doubt competent at both ends of the ice, his main focus is his defense. While racking up points and stats is attractive to many, Verhault simply values team success and will happily play his two-way role to perfection for his draft team. In conclusion, Verhault is a very competent two-day defenseman with a slight preference to defensive zone play, but is able to translate his game into offense with his lightning skating and physical tools, creating threats in the offensive zone and safety in the defensive zone. With this being said, Verhault is not a perfect prospect by any means of the word. While he has astonishing physical tools, he is lacking in ice vision when it comes to both ends of the Ice. While in minor league play he can often make up for this with his speed and checking, it is a concern if he will be able to correct it when it comes to higher level of play, such as the VHL. Verhault is also known to be a relatively quiet person, and is not considered an overly positive locker room presence, despite being willing to play roles to secure team success. Another weakness of Verhault's is his shooting, having a sub-level slap shot and an almost inexistent wrist shot. Though like many other players, Verhault has a high work ethic and is willing to correct the mistakes in his game. Classically Verhault is viewed as a two-way defender, and an excellent prospect with top 4 potential to some teams in the Victory Hockey League.
  10. DIDIER VERHAULT PROFESSIONAL DEBUT After arriving with the club on July 8th, Didier's first batch of expected games were unfortunately delayed by airport mismanagement which caused the majority of his hockey gear and most notably, his stick, to have been left in Belgium. This mistake was corrected within a day, but Didier was displeased, losing games which he considered critical to his career in the Victory Hockey League Minors. After getting his stick at the airport, Didier was finally added to the Defensive lines of the Mexico City Kings, and prepared to make his professional debut against the San Diego Marlins. Inserted along the second defensive line, Didier's main line mate would be stud Defenseman Conference Prince-de-Gall. FIRST PERIOD Beginning in the first period, Didier wouldn't exactly set his debut aflame, sending a pass wild along the boards for an icing call as his first puck action in the Victory Hockey League Minors. Didier would also be placed along multiple Penalty Kill lines for the Kings, playing a notable role in killing two penalties with the Kings later that night. After taking a large hit from Eric White Jr, Didier would have a relatively quiet first period of his Minors career. SECOND PERIOD The Kings entered the second period down a score of 2-0 to the Marlins, who had a noticeable point lead over Mexico City heading into the match-up. Shortly after the Kings grabbed a puck in net to cut the lead to a single goal, Didier would deliver a huge hit on Tyrece the Beast, securing the puck for his team. After this hit Didier would once again nearly disappear for the remainder of the period, providing stable level play but nothing extraordinary. THIRD PERIOD Unknown to the Kings and Didier Verhault, the third period of his debut game would be his most important by far. 11 minutes into the Period, Steven McDard delivers the go ahead goal putting the Kings up by a goal, with Didier recording the primary assist for his first career point in the Victory Hockey League minors. The Kings would close out the score, with Didier recording a point, 3 hits, and 1 shot blocked. This game reflected Didier's natural checking ability and physicality, clearly translating to the next level as he begins his jounrey in the Victory Hockey League minors.

    Commish For a Day

commish for a day What would I do if I was commish for a day? Well first I'd have to question the integrity of the league. As a returning member with questionable activity I doubt I could actually handle the position of commissioner. I'd probably create a council to reinstate order to VHL, or to administer my dictatorial power! On a more serious note, I would definitely make some major changes to the league itself. ABOLISH TPE, thats right. Abolishing TPE. From now on players are rated EA style, 1-99 overall. I hope you're ready for a reckoning. Mandatory relocations of all teams to ancient Crusade cities, mostly Jerusalem and Alexandria, because who doesn't love old rivalries? If I couldn't relocate all teams to different Holy Cities in the Middle East, then they would be relocated to the cantons of Japan, and GMs would be replaced by the local Daimyo lords. While it is fun to talk about relocating, it wouldn't be any fun without including draft changes. For my final change and improvement as GM, all draft positions would be swapped. If you were took first overall, then you become Mr Irrelevant, and all the late bloomers finally get their chance to shine in this new league of mine!
  12. PLAYER MENTOR DIDIER VERHAULT You would be right to call Didier Verhault a late bloomer in terms of prospects, likely the largest reason for his slide and relative outright exclusion from prospect rankings. Recently Verhault has signed an entry-level contract midseason with the Mexico City Kings, taking his first steps into the Victory Hockey League systems. Quoting Didier himself he is "excited for this new chapter in his career, and anticipates a long journey with the League" This is not to say that Didier has no connections or relations to the Victory Hockey League. As recent as a year ago he was taken as a pupil to the retired Defenseman Shaggy Tipton, who Didier would style much of his game and playing style after Tipton's own. Tipton had a short, but respectable career in both the Victory Hockey League Minors and the Victory Hockey League. Tipton himself had a decorated career, winning both the Ryan Sullivan Award and Jake Thunder Award for his individual awards, and capitalizing his career with the Founder's Cup in the Victory Hockey League minors. These would be the spotlight of Didier's mentor though, as injuries shortened his career. Didier has spoken up out of respect to his mentor, recognizing his awards, but also announcing that he plans for his career to outlast Tipton's, and aspires to become more than just a flash-in-the-pan Minor League player and fringe Major Leaguer. Verhault's game has been modeled closely to Tipton's, placing an emphasis on defensive competence with matching offensive capability. Headlined by these skills are Verhault's notable checking skills, with body his body and his stick. Didier's passing skills and offensive zone awareness are also very noticeable in games, as he rarely seems to disappear on either side of the ice. At first the main conflict of Tipton being Didier's mentor had been his language block, only being able to speak Belgian and some Dutch. After months of attending on ice training with Tipton, Didier would slowly gain the ability to speak English. Signing in Mexico City, Didier was asked in a report about the language barrier between him and Mexico City's staff, answering "Thankfully most players can speak English, I can barely order food in Spanish,".
