Pope Francis: Free Agency

Two seasons ago I went completely mia and now I have returned. Unfortunately because of me missing such a long period of time my stock as a player is way down. So now I have to figure out what the future of the Pope will be as his career moves forward. Let's look into what could come from free agency for the Pope.

1. Resigning with LA.

This would honestly be my preferred option, but I understand that a competitive team would likely not want to be held down be a player that may not earn as much as you would prefer a defenseman to.

1a. Long term

This is highly unlikely at this point, but I always enjoy signing big beefy contracts with teams that draft me and I would like to sign a longer 3 or 4 season contract with LA.

1b. Short term

If I sign with LA I believe this is the likely option and 1 or two season contract that would allow me to prove myself as a player coming back into the league. This is isn't my number 1 choice, but I would prefer this over moving to another team.

2. Signing with a competitive team

If I don't come back to LA I would like to play for a team that is likely to make playoffs. This deal ideally would be two seasons and again allow myself to prove myself as back. I'd say this is somewhat likely however not the most likely.

3. Signing with a borderline team

Next up I would like to sign for a team either just coming out for a rebuild or just entering one. A team that could make playoffs but it would be a bit more of a stretch. For this I would either want to sign a long term contract or a short term contract depending on if they are coming out or coming into a rebuild.

4. Signing with a bottom dweller

This would be my last choice and I would only sign a one season contract with a team in this category. I would want to be here just to play and prove that I'm back and be able to sign a longer contract the following season with a competitive team or resign if their rebuild is moving quickly. That being said if you have an offer for me I will pay attention to it and I will talk to you about what you could do to bring me in.

These are all the situations I see and in order of how much I would like them to happen. With that being said I have only had one person talk to me and I would love for more teams to reach out to me because I am back. I do believe that the Pope is a solid player having a fairly good season while being very low in TPA and in theory he should be very good pretty quickly. If you have any questions about my build feel free to message me and I will send you my planned build. All that said let's get talking and bring his Holiness into the fold.

Retire. Make a greenlander. Conquer the VHLM. Profit.

Stay strong, Pope Francis, don’t let the forces of evil corrupt you!

I think your first point doesn’t really apply because there’s absolutely a space for players who don’t max earn on good VHL rosters. If everyone did it, we’d have one hell of a salary cap.

That said, players like that are, as you said, more disposable. People will always look for “upgrades” that you might be on the wrong end of. I always did my best as a GM to communicate with the players and make the moves I made as much of a mutual understanding as possible, and I think players can start those conversations as well.
