Jala 922
Simon Valmount - RW 6'2" - 196 lbs. Welcome to this edition of Rookie Showcase where we will profile newcomer Simon Valmount. Valmount hails from Utsjoki, Finland and is another Finn making the leap to the VHL. He will be making his entry into the VHLM alongside fellow Finn Kerkko Hyvärinen, and the duo will be looking to show the league that the stereotype of soft Finnish players isn't true. Valmount is looking to shape into the prototypical two-way forward with a mean streak and offensive touch every VHL team aches for, and he will be a hot commodity in the S44 Entry Draft. His frame is tall and lanky, but look for him to bulk up in his time playing in the VHLM. Valmount has played big minutes for his Finnish major league team and for Team Finland's U-18 squad. He practically lives in the gym and his development is coming along at a steady pace. Valmount's dedication to playing a 200 foot game while adding an offensive threat will draw comparisons to XXX in a few seasons. What to Look Forward To! Simon Valmount is a strong skater who's not afraid to get into the corners and muck things up. His impressive foot speed and agility will make Valmount difficult to contain, and will be a voracious fore-checker and back-checker. Valmount uses that impressive skating ability to dominate opponents with the body and has everyone checking over their shoulder when he's on the ice. His active stick helps him turn the puck over and don't be surprised if you see him lead the VHLM in takeaways. A strong passer with great vision, Valmount adds that offensive strength to his arsenal to prove he's a two-way player. Valmount will almost assuredly be a front runner for the Matt Bentz Trophy (formerly the Yzerman). What Not to Expect! It wouldn't be fair to say that Valmount has stone hands, but he's certainly not going to dangle through an entire team or split defenders any time soon. His puck handling and puck protecting skills could use some work and his giveaways will be an issue early in his career. While Valmount is a capable passer, he is very reluctant to shoot the puck and his goal totals will reflect that. His coaches in the future will have to help him work on his shot and coax him into being more willing to tickle the twine. With his slight frame Valmount is knocked off the puck easily, but will be working on his weight training and skating to compensate for that until he fills into his man body. Career Prediction It would be a safe bet to say that Simon Valmount will finish his career as a top line winger who will be a contender for the Scott Boulet Trophy for many seasons to come. As long as he retains his commitment to training the ceiling for this young prospect is very high.
