Smarch 3,153
World Cup of Hockey The season forty-two off-season is now in full swing and with it comes the Victory Hockey League’s version of a World Cup of Hockey tournament. Every three years in during the off-season, the league holds the World Cup for players to have a chance to represent their country on a big stage. Last time the tournament was held the United States come out on top with taking home the gold medal in a 2-0 win over team Scandinavia. Every year the World Cup is played, the teams have a drastically different look and this season is no different with the new arrivals and recent retirements in the league. We’ll take a look today at some of the teams and the rosters they will carry over the next week while battling it out. Team U.S.A. Coming off a gold medal winning performance, expectations will again run high for the hockey crazy country. The team will bring back a veteran laded roster in season forty-two. Forwards Freedom McJustice and Tyson Stokes will be the new additions to the forward core in replace of the two retired Gow’s, Robin and Robert, while Jack Kowalski will be the only new defenseman entering the fold this time around. In net both Waldron and Mikaelson will be back to patrol the blue paint for the Americans, but this time around the starter might switch to Mikaelson. With a very similar roster heading back to the World Cup for the Americans, a gold of bust mentality will be a must for twelve players on the roster. Team Scandinavia Team Scandinavia were the Cinderella story of the last World Cup played in the VHL. While the team didn’t light up the round robin with their play, they did just enough to get themselves into the elimination round and rode the wave all the way to the finals. Like the United States, Scandinavia will be taking a very similar roster into this year’s version of the World Cup. Up front Scandinavia will be only introducing one new player to the roster in Niklas Kurri, while on the back-end the team will see a few more new faces. Niklas Karlsson and Golden Jedtsson will get their first shot at international hockey in the VHL, but the biggest change may be the one made in the blue paint. Riga Reign prospect Bernie Gow will suit up for an international game before pulling on a VHL jersey for the first time. If Scandinavia expects to make it back to the finals, Gow will need to carry the load behind a veteran roster. West Europe Team Western Europe had a great tournament the last time the VHL got together for the World Cup of Hockey, but this time may be a different story. The other teams will be sending a few different players with some international experience to the World Cup, but team West Europe will be only returning two players from the season forty World Cup. Goaltender Martin Brookside and defenseman Ron World Peace will be the two veterans returning to the West Europe team, and those two will be leaned on heavily to help the team get back to the elimination round. The forward core may be young, but they are some of the best young players in the VHL today so that should be the least of the worries for the team, but the defensive depth behind World Peace could spell trouble for Brookside and the entire West Europe roster. With Day one of the World Cup about to start, time will tell if Brookside and team Western Europe can medal for the second straight season. Tagger 2,722
World Cup Hype! Only thing to point out would be Brookside isn't playing for Team Western Europe, since he's retired and created Hyvarinen, but their replacement (Wingate) is also pretty good considering his age.
