Smarch 3,153
Where do we go now? After a weird season in Quebec City, the Quebec Meute seem to have more questions than answers heading into the VHL's Forty-Sixth season. With the Toronto Legion and Seattle Bears in a full rebuilding stage the Meute were able to sneak into the playoffs in Season Forty-Five, but were swept by the Calgary Wranglers as expected by many that follow the league. With only four roster players under contract heading into next season, there will be a lot of work ahead for Meute General Manager Clinton Chevy heading into the upcoming VHL off-season. In this weeks article we'll look into some of the possibilities that the Meute might explore heading into next season and beyond. VHL Trade Market: Currently the Meute have no draft selections in the Season Forty-Six VHL Entry Draft, which is clearly a big mistake by management in what has to be considered one of the best draft classes in recent VHL history, the Meute may need to turn to the VHL trade market. With such a tight race in the European Conference this season and seasons to come, some teams may be looking to sell off assets to enter a re-tooling or rebuilding phase. Also with a hard salary cap that hasn't been adjusted in many seasons, teams are finding it harder and harder to take the same roster players into consecutive season. Both situations favour the Meute at this point, as they don't have many active roster players that demand a high salary at the current position the franchise is in. Hopefully General Manager Chevy will be keeping a close eye on the trade waivers this off-season, or fans in Quebec may have to live with another below average season. VHL Entry Draft: As stated earlier on in the article the Meute currently have no draft picks in the upcoming draft, but that doesn't mean they won't enter draft day in the same situation. Quebec has four picks in the Season Forty-Seven Entry Draft that could possibly be used to help the club move into the upcoming draft. With Seattle and Toronto dominating the draft this year with seven out of the ten picks in the first round between the two of them, Quebec might be able to make a deal with one of those two franchises. If they are unable to do so, the team will really have to put all their resources into scouting for the next draft, to find the next VHL superstar as there might not be the same calibre of players declaring for the Season Forty-Seven Entry Draft. Either way the next few drafts will be a huge component for the Meute who will be looking to exit their rebuilding stage in Season Forty-Seven and beyond. Culture Change: One the biggest things in my mind the Meute need to do to exit out of their rebuilding stage, would be a culture change for the franchise. It has been well documented over the course of the franchises existence, that Quebec has often played the villain in the VHL, Although the management and core players from the beginning of the teams existence has changed, one thing that hasn't changed is the distaste for the franchise by many players and player agents around the league. General Manager Chevy irks many people around the league and goaltender Ariel Weinstein has been disappointed by some of the statements by his General Manager in his first season between the pipes for the Meute. Hopefully the Meute will show some class no matter the situation in the coming seasons, so they will be able to attract new blood to the franchise. Great article summarizing the ongoings of the Meute as the seasons turns over into the off-season. Future draft picks, players under contract... it's about to get crazy! ~610.
