sterling 1,997
Jeff Hamilton Rookie Profile Name: Jeff Hamilton Height: 6 feet, 2 inches Weight: 205 pounds Age: 21 Handedness: Left Overview The smooth moving defenseman from England isn't a stranger to the VHL circle as his younger brother Phil went first overall in last year's Entry Draft. Expectations likely aren't as high for the older brother at this point as he hasn't shown the same work ethic as Phil. What the older Hamilton lacks in practice hours, he seems to make up in experience and skill. Jeff Hamilton projects to be an above average VHL player. In Season 45 with the talented Bern Royals, Hamilton finished the campaign as the fourth overall scorer in the VHLM. He was the unquestioned leader of the Royals defense core, setting up many goals over the course of the season (92 assists) and scoring 36 of his own. Surprisingly, Hamilton wasn't a defensive liability for the Royals, posting respectable physical and +/- numbers as well. Hamilton registered 321 shots and 21 power play goals which leads us to believe that he may very well become one of the VHL's premier power play specialists. Pre-Draft: Hamilton has a steady accumulation of practice hours - logging approximately 7 per week as it stands. He is expected to go in the first round of the VHL Entry Draft, but where is anyone's guess. Hamilton is likely seen as the safest prospect in the draft as he comes from the vaulted Labatte Player Agency that has produced five Hall of Fame players (Labatte, Jonsson, A. Labatte, Bencharski, and Slaughter). Hamilton will likely land in either Seattle or Toronto as they hold a plethora of first round picks in this draft. Pros: Skating: Hamilton's skill on his skates was evident this past season in Bern. Likened to a Jacob Trouba who can control the ice surface at any given time, Hamilton shows flashes of brilliance with open space. Hamilton is said to be one of the top skaters in this draft class which is exciting when you consider that he is a defenseman. He's expected to continue to improve his skating this off-season in hopes of securing a first pairing role with his VHL team in Season 46. Background: This has already been mentioned, but here it goes again. No other player agency can boast the number of Hall of Fame players as Hamilton's. He comes from a very secure tradition of all-star players throughout the decades of the VHL. Notably, the Labatte player agency has produced two Hall of Fame defenders. One of which was a defensive defenseman who played on some of the greatest defensive-minded teams of all-time and the other is one of the greatest two-way defenseman of all-time. Hamilton will be a more offensively-minded defenseman which offers the player agency a third kick at the VHL defense can. Power Play Quarterback: Having notched 48 points on the power play (21 goals) in Season 45 with Bern, one would expect Hamilton to continue this trend as he matures into a VHL defenseman. His ability to see the ice and dish the puck will go a far way in the big leagues. Moreover, Hamilton has developed a booming shot from the point. VHL Gneral Managers can safely put the young man on their first power play line and not expect many offensive mistakes. Cons Lack of Practice: Throughout Hamilton's existence he hasn't excelled at hitting the gym like previous Labatte players. Despite this deficiency, he stands as one of the top prospects in the draft and will easily not qualify for the VHLM next season. This means Hamilton will be playing in the VHL as a raw rookie and may be one of the worst players in the league next season. Perhaps the defenseman will increase his practice time with a motivated General Manager or perhaps he will continue to collect pension benefits and be a slightly above average player. Defense: Hamilton makes no bones about jumping into a rush which often times can and will lead to odd man rushes going the other way. Hamilton's defensive partner would ideally be a more defensive player who can control odd man situations while Jeff jumps back into the play. Thankfully, the defenseman has the speed to jump back into the play if he makes a mad rush. Expect his defensive skill to catch up slower, perhaps toward the middle of his VHL career. Physical Play: Hamilton won't be putting up gaudy hits or penalty minute totals. Something the Labatte Player Agency has been trending away from in recent years is physical play. Why? Because it doesn't necessarily contribute to a team's success. Ideally, Hamilton will have power play opportunities to work with and he won't have those if he's sitting in the penalty box. With that said, expect bigger forwards to grind down Hamilton in some situations. This can be made up for in speed and puck handling over time. Projection Jeff Hamilton projects as a first time defensive pairing in the VHL. A role he could fill as soon as Season 46. Ideally, the defenseman would get second line minutes during his first season with some additional power play time. Perhaps not the cornerstone of a franchise, but a player that projects still as solidly above average. Hamilton has the pedigree to be a Hall of Fame player.
