Hybrid1486 577 Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 Toronto and Seattle at the Draft The end of the VHL season is near, with Calgary holding a 3-1 series lead on Helsinki in the VHL Finals. With that in mind, attention is turning towards the off-season, and the VHL Entry Draft is sure to be a hot topic over the next few weeks. For the draft's top prospects, the big question is whether they will end up on Toronto or Seattle, owners of eight of the ten first-round picks (including the top five). For both teams, the cupboard is mostly barren. The situation is slightly more dire in Toronto, but they also have the luxury of the having three of the top five picks, including first overall. Seattle has the benefit of a few prospects who may pan out, but they have a slightly worse draft outlook. Here's a look at where each team stands and how they might improve in the draft. Toronto Currently, the only prospect in Toronto's system that is even close to becoming a reliable VHL player is Max Molholt, who is closely related to the Legion's general manager, Mike Molholt. They have no current VHL players or VHLM prospects outside of Molholt who are actively improving, and that led to their historically awful showing this past season. That said, they do have five picks in the first round of a draft class that is outwardly quiet, yet full of potential. In addition to their own first pick, they own the picks of Stockholm (third overall), Quebec (fifth), Davos (seventh), and Calgary (likely tenth). Unfortunately for them, there are few goaltenders in the class at all, and the only one with any sort of potential, Cooper Supernaw, has tailed off in recent weeks. It's likely that most of their picks will spend another season in the VHLM, with the exception of likely first pick Zach Parechkin, so they'll be able to drive at another poor season with a roster of VHL plugs while hoping that a top-notch goaltender makes himself available for the next draft. Seattle For as bad as Toronto was, Seattle was even worse, only managing 11 wins and 25 points for the season. Unlike Toronto, however, they have a goaltender in Ryan Price who has at least shown up in recent weeks. It remains to be seen whether or not he'll put in the necessary effort to become a reliable goalie in the majors, but he's a lot closer than anyone Toronto has a chance at. Seattle also has a young player with close ties to the GM, in this case defender Arcturus Mengsk. On the downside, they only have three firsts in the draft: their own (second), Cologne's (fourth), and Helsinki's (likely ninth). Fortunately for them, the draft is fairly heavy in forwards, and that's what they need. There are a few targets they should have a shot at with all of their picks that could become high-impact players, or they could snatch a defenseman to pair with Mengsk for a shutdown tandem over the next several seasons. Pete Stockton and Shawn Muller are likely targets early on, while Jory Rose and Leandre St. Pierre could be picked at the end of the round or at the top of the second. All in all, neither team is in an ideal scenario, but they should be able to put together a good draft and field a productive team within two seasons. They should hope that the talent pool for the next season is a little deeper and includes a sure-thing in net. This draft,however, should give them both a good foundation on offense and defense.
