In a press conference at Madison Square Garden last night, the New York Americans announced Ron Dayne III to take over as the team’s General Manager after the previous General Manager Chris Miller stepped down after a 14 season stint in the role.  The choice of replacement for Miller was not a particular surprise as Dayne had been linked with being Miller’s eventual successor since Season 44, however the move happened a lot earlier than many had anticipated. Originally, Miller had planned to step down after he had overtaken former Calgary Wranglers General Manager Jason Glasser as the most tenured General Manager in the VHL, but Miller had also promised to step down if he lost interest in the role and we understand that he approached Dayne about taking over the reins after losing to the Wranglers in the S46 North American Championship game, the third consecutive season the Americans had been eliminated from the playoffs in their first series.

The road that Dayne took to become a General Manager has been an interesting one, especially considering his first experiences with professional hockey came after he had already retired from another sport. Starting off his professional sports career as a fullback for the Orlando Ducks in the Madden Football Association, Dayne gained a cult following despite playing at an oft-overlooked position and that attention eventually saw him move to the more prominent halfback positions as a designated franchise player for both the Wilmington Revolution in the Madden Football Association and the Washington Federals in the United States Football League. After declaring his retirement from professional football, Dayne decided to take up hockey and was actually drafted in both the Season 30 VHLM Draft and the Season 31 VHL Draft. In the VHLM for the Kolari Pantheres, Dayne actually had a surprisingly successful career, racking up 161 points in 144 games, however his age prevented him from making the jump to the VHL proper.

He then decided to use his wisdom and experience of multiple professional sports to assist more players who wanted to make the jump between professional sports leagues. His first client, and so far (technically) the only client he has represented to this point, was former baseball star Edwin Encarnacion who, like Dayne, wanted to make the move to the VHL. Encarnacion was another player who gained somewhat of a cult following for his physical play and penchant for finding the penalty box, however his efforts to enter the record books for these feats saw him cross swords with VHL Commissioners, who hired a man with a flamethrower in a plot to murder Encarnacion after his final game. While this plot was ultimately successful, Encarnacion’s soul did not die and he now walks the world as “Edwin Reencarnacion”, a man who is permanently on fire and surprisingly good at hockey.

Around the same time as that incident, Ron Dayne III was set to take up the Seattle Bears general manager spot after VHL Commissioners had decided to remove then general manager Tyler Barabash after a failure to complete a number of mandatory GM tasks, however a public show of support by the Seattle Bears players in favour of Barabash saw him keep his job. Ultimately, Barabash would be dismissed only a season later after failing to attend team meetings. Dayne’s name was again brought up in the discussion for the vacant role, but complications involving bringing in his desired franchise player (Reencarnacion) ruled him out.
