Legion Growth

Last season, despite what most people were thinking, the Toronto Legion found themselves in a playoff spot. While their team did not look entirely strong, they benefited greatly from teams in the North American Conference that were in rebuild mode. They rode on the backs of Max Molholt and Zach Parechkin, as well as stellar play from TOR G, and landed in the post-season. Although, things ended fast as expected, but this season things were worse even with a better roster.

In Season 47, a couple of rookies found their way onto the Legion's roster, with LeAndre St. Pierre and Pete Stockton aiding offensively. Both of these players have over 50 points, which is pretty awesome all things considered, but at the same time they both share a -46 in the plus/minus column. LSP has 60 points and Stockton has 53, with LSP at 30 goals and Stockton at 28. It would be no surprise if Stockton reaches the 30 goal plateau as well, and both of these players have been taking huge strides in the VHL. Even Pete Stockton as a rookie has 245 hits, while him and St. Pierre both have close to 100 shot blocks. These players having grown this fast in their first season is going to help Toronto in a big way heading forward.

For the rookie race alone, both of these Toronto Legion stars have a chance at winning it. LeAndre St. Pierre is of course the front-runner on the Legion for the Christian Stolzschweiger, but he has some top competition from around the VHL. Joel Jarvi has 13 goals and 48 assists, for 61 points, which is 1 more than LSP, although the season is not over yet. Tom Lincoln started slower than those other players, but heated up quickly and finds himself also at 60 points. Niels Skovgaard at 55 points with his two-way game have him in the mix as well. It is going to be tough for the VHL to vote on who will win the Top Rookie Award, but possibly LSP's 30 goals and 30 assists will propel him to win it? Right now he is the sole player who has hit the 30 goal mark in that category, although others are close, but since he has been scoring and assisting at the same pace, that two-way game could aid him in winning the trophy. It's all up for grabs at this point.

Max Molholt is a player who nobody expects to have a bad season at this point. He has carried the Legion since entering the VHL, and was the key reason why Zach Parechkin won the Christian Stolzschweiger last season. Molholt currently sits at 8th overall in league leaders, and he has 43 goals and 41 assists, for 84 points in 69 games. Something to note would be Max's 20 hits. While this seems pretty low for a top forward, one will have to also note Thomas O'Malley's 2 hits. The idea of that happening sounds crazy considering how offensive and tough Thomas or Max have to be in order to find those goals and chances out on the ice, but both players definitely benefit from having hitters on their line.

For his second season in the VHL, Zach Parechkin still remains competitive, and although he dropped out of that Top 10 scoring spot he was in earlier in the season, he still sits at 16th at the moment. He is one of the best hitters in the league once again with 304, which is good for 4th overall....but he has been experiencing a slowdown since he was standing pat as 2nd best for so long. At the rate he was scoring as well earlier this season, it was somewhat expected for him to beat out his last season's records. He has 36 goals right now, which is the same that he had in Season 46, so with 3 games left he could very well pass it. With assists, he has 39, and last season it was 45. It's not entirely out of the question for him to hit that mark again, but it is doubtful. As previously mentioned, he has 304 hits, so he has already beaten himself in that regard considering the milestone for him was 303.

World B. Free has been making strides himself, being arguably just as good or better than last season, and Chuck Goody has come into the defensive mix quite well also. Free's talent and season of experience has rubbed off on Goody in a great way.

Sadly, this season the Legion have gone 19-43-7. Obvious to everyone, that record is not good enough for the playoffs, but you have to consider the fact that the Seattle Bears made themselves competitive this season. They acquired free agents, and became a contender for the cup. Toronto decided on going another season in their rebuild, which will ultimately lead to another top pick in the draft. As far as the Legion are concerned, it's on to the next season for them.

Review:

great article. Sad to see the Legion struggling like they are but you guys seem in good shape with last year's RotY, a frontrunner for RotY this year, and with a top RotY prospect in Velvet next year. Good job covering just about everything about the Legion
