Claimed:Facts About Those Represented in the All-Star Game [Reviewed]

Edwin Reencarnacion

With a ten-point lead over his nearest rival, it seems like Edwin Reencarnacion can be considered a frontrunner for the Mike Szatkowski Award for Season 48. What makes Reencarnacion’s season so historically relevant though is his current status as the VHL’s leader in penalty minutes. If Reencarnacion were to end this season as both the league leader in points and penalty minutes, he would be the first person to do so since at least Season 17 (Since Season 18 has the earliest recoverable index).

Arcturus Mengsk

Arcturus Mengsk is having one hell of a season so far. With still over 20 games left to play this season, Mengsk has scored 32 goals, a total that took Phil Hamilton an entire season to match in Season 47. In fact, you’d have to go back to Season 34 to find a season which had a higher goal-scoring defenseman, when Alexander Valiq recorded 39 goals (It’s worth pointing out that Teevo Ruutu in Season 42 and Lloyd Light in Season 41 are listed as having more goals, however despite their listing, they did not play as defenseman for the entire season, if at all) . It will be interesting to see whether Mengsk can overtake that, as he’s gone on a run of seven games without a goal, a run which is coincidentally tied to an update from Jeff Hamilton that put him at an equal scoring attribute to Mengsk.

Seattle Bears

In addition to Mengsk, the Seattle Bears will also be represented by Niels Skovgaard, Shawn Muller, Sandro Clegane and Jeff Hamilton. This marks the first time since Season 30 (where they coincidentally also had five representatives) where the Bears have had more than three players represent their team in the All-Star game. While the Bears may have benefitted from the change in format as Hamilton will be the fifth defenseman to represent the North American Conference in the All-Star game (previously only four were allowed), it is still an impressive shift for a franchise that has mainly struggled over the last ten seasons.

1st and 2nd Overall

While every player selected first overall from Season 44 onwards (Reencarnacion, Phil Hamilton, Parechkin, Sleeman, Velvet) will be taking part in the All-Star game, none of the players selected with the first two selections earlier than or in the Season 43 Draft. The absence of the first overall selections in the Season 41 and Season 42 drafts are self-explanatory as both Niklaus Mikaelson and Bismarck Koenig are retired. Season 43 first overall selection E’Twaun Delicious is still waiting for his first all-star appearance, if he were to retire without one he would be the first first overall selection to fail to make an appearance in the all-star game since Josef Heiss Jr., the first overall selection of the Season 31 Draft. While the second overall selections from the Season 41, 42 and 43 Drafts are still around, none of them have done enough to convince voters that they deserve to make the All-Star game. Season 41 second overall selection Jack Kowalski is the lowest scoring player on the Toronto Legion so his absence is self-explanatory. Season 43 second overall selection Bronson Faux could not join his brother Marcel in the All-Star game, as a failure to combat regression and playing on a rebuilding Reign team has kept him out of contention. The player who got closest to playing in the All-Star game was retiring goalie Callum Sinclair, the Season 42 second overall selection, however he narrowly missed out to fellow retiree Blake Campbell in the public vote.
