Up and Down

The standings say it all. While the Toronto Legion have been for over a season the most powerful team in the VHL, the Meute have slowly but surely taken that crown away, at least in the regular season. Toronto's last 10 games has them with a record of 7-2-1, and with Quebec City hot on their tails, that is not something you want to be doing if you want to hold down 1st place in the VHL.

Quebec on the other hand is 9-0-1 in their last 10 games, and has only lost twice in their last 39 games. That is some kind of streak, so these two top teams will be in a great race for 1st in this final stretch. One of the things to consider is that within this streak of wins for the Quebec City Meute, they also have beat the Toronto Legion. The Legion beat them three times earlier in the season, but once things got rolling for the Meute after acquiring Alexei Koponen, they handled Toronto by a 3-1 score.

Not too long ago, the Toronto Legion hit a rough patch where they were 2-2-2 in six games. They lost in extra time to the New York Americans and the Cologne Express, while also losing in regulation two more times to the Americans, once by a 6-1 score. Nobody is really sure what happened to the dominant Legion in that span, but things have seemed to turn back around as of late.

The Quebec City Meute currently hold a 2 points lead over the Legion for top spot in the VHL, while both teams have already clinched a playoff berth at the 57 game mark, both also having 49 wins to their credit. Looking at recent events, Toronto is currently riding a five game winning streak. They handled the Seattle Bears, Calgary Wranglers, Riga Reign, and two times, the Helsinki Titans. While these teams could be considered weaker in the league, it is a nice boost to a team who has gotten so used to winning these days.

Basically the pinpoint to the Legion's success this season can easily be credited to superstar Max Molholt. This guy has been scoring at an outstanding pace, while still having a point-per-game of over 2.00. He has 118 points in 57 games, which by today's VHL standards is a bit crazy. He currently holds the league's best point scoring streak at 11 straight games. The offensive balance of the Legion has definitely carried them to the top these past couple of seasons, and these playoffs in Season 49 will be interesting ones, that is certain. With only 15 games left in the VHL's regular season left, it will be a race between the Meute and Legion for first place, and you know that buy into the 2nd round of the playoffs for being in first is going to be huge in the North American Conference.
