After a rough start to the VHLs’ Fiftieth Season, the Calgary Wranglers find themselves in better position now past the half-way position on the season. After a start that say the Wranglers occupy the basement of the league for the first few weeks, the team that General Manager Austin Gow assembled in the off-season is now fighting to hang on to the last playoff position in the North American Conference. With a majority of the roster lacing up the skates for the first time, the Wranglers were expecting growing pains as they went along with a young roster. The rookies seems to be finding their place in the league in the past few weeks, slowing down the pace of play and assuring themselves they belong in the big leagues. Today we’ll take a look at some of those players that are suiting up in a VHL jersey for the first time.

Theo Axelsson: Axelsson was neck and neck with fellow prospect Diana Maxwell leading up to the Season Fifty VHL Entry Draft. The Wranglers were more than elated when the Vikings picked Maxwell and left Axelsson at their doorstep. So far in the forty-nine games that Axelsson has suited up for his season, he has done everything that the team had hoped for from the young Swedish forward. Axelsson currently sits second behind veteran Marquis Hyvarinen in points with thirty-six, but the most impressive stat to date would have to be the 202 hits that Axelsson has registered. The bruising forward could be in the running for the top two way forward in the league this season and in future seasons to come if he keeps up his offensive numbers and hit totals. With the Wranglers roster expected to grow next season, Axelsson should see even bigger numbers in the stats sheets in Season Fifty-One and beyond.

Travis Gowecny:  A players with big expectations because of the player agency he is signed to, Gowecny has been providing stable play in the middle of the Wranglers line-up. Although he is slightly behind Axelsson in terms of development, Gowecny is still making it to practise each week, progressing nicely since he declared himself eligible for the VHL. Gowecny currently sits second on the Wranglers in goals with eighteen, while sitting third on the team in points just behind Axelsson with thirty-four points. With Gowecny also being the number one center on the team, he is expected to face-off against the best opposition centers. Gowecny hasn’t blown the roof off with his face-off percentage this season, but he has put up a respectable 44 percent on the stat sheet. Gowecny will be expected to help lead the way in terms of offense for the foreseeable future.

Jim Lahey: Named captain of the ship in just his first season in a Wrangler jersey, Lahey has been providing stable play on what can see shaped up to be a shaky defensive core. Lahey who is a Season Forty-Nine draft choice of the Wranglers, spent an extra season in the minors to hone his overall game. Lahey is a defensive first type of player so he doesn’t always have the flashiest stats sheet, but he shows up each and every day with his best foot forward. With this constant approach he has won over the respect of the locker-room, which is all Lahey has ever wanted.

It's going to be interesting to see if Theo Axelsson can keep up his success. He has been pretty solid this year but that won't hinder his future. Jim Lahey is just a staple in the locker room. His agent will always be connected to the franchise. Calgary has some solid players. Can they bring in more to make their careers matter though?
