The Day My Allegiance Changed

My first love will always be the Saskatoon Wild, and I’ve been drafted by the Ottawa Lynx. It’s an interesting time that few could understand until they’ve walked in my shoes. The concept of drafting a player into an organization is both a great opportunity, and an organizational restriction of player freedoms. A time, for me, of mixed emotion. If you think that I am the only player to ever find frustration in the draft system you would be wrong, it just isn't often that we speak of it publicly. We are just good ‘ol Canadian boys who keep our heads down, work hard, and don't complain.

 

I must share with you all the excitement I feel for my future being hand picked by Jardy and the Ottawa organization. To them I am grateful and always will be. I hope to contribute greatly to the future of my team. This article is not about my future, it is about this moment. About the conflict of growing up where the only game around was the Wild, and the only colour I’ve ever dreamt of was blue.

 

I won't pretend not to be disappointed, and neither were my brother and father who both donned the Wilds blue. It ran in the family until this day, and I’m working on being okay with that. Never did I plan on pulling a Lindros and demand a trade or anything to that extreme, but I’d be lying if I didn't briefly think about how satisfying that would be.

 

At eighteen years old I’m preparing to pack my gear and move to the nation's capital. I’ll leave behind the great plains of my youth, my family, and all I have ever known because there was an executive on the other side of the country who enlisted my services. This also means that through the years of living in the backyard of the Saskatoon Wild they didn’t see enough from me to merit a pick. I know several players, and have attended youth camps with Saskie year after year. Tournaments have been held on Wild home ice with scouting staff in attendance, and Ottawa must have found something they liked during those times. Why couldn’t the Wild have found the same? Nothing can be done now but to teach the Wild how bad of a decision they’ve made, and to prove Ottawa’s scouting right. My emotion has always powered my game, and I am aware that at times I can let it get the better of me, so I must let these results settle into my mind and come to grips with my situation. I will persevere, and flourish with my new team and family. I will come home victorious over the Wild. When my family needs blood it will now be orange that i bleed. I shall keep my head down, work hard, and win!
