As March Ends, Smarch Gets Started

I'm really glad to have Smarch as the GM in Davos, and so far, I like what he's done. No, it really hasn't been much, but trading the 2nd overall pick to acquired 5th and 8th will give us a wider roster going forward, which I think is what we need right now. We have a goalie in place (mist4ke) and Rusty Trombone on the way, but that's about it before we make our draft selections. This draft is about 13 or 14 active players deep, so in addition to 5th and 8th, we should be able to get someone with potential at 11th. I do like the pick we would likely have made at 2nd overall, but there actually is always the chance that he falls to 5th and we get him anyway. In a draft like this, it's hard to predict, and the best player for one team isn't always going to be the first, second, or even third choice for another team. There are a variety of factors to include when there are several high quality draftees. Even at 8th, we could get a player who might be our second or third priority in the draft.

This upcoming season will be a struggle once again, though. We did trade away Pavel Komarov in the deal, and although he's not a star, he was probably the best player on the team last season. That's really not saying much, considering the roster, but it could mean an even rougher time in net for mist4ke. He may have one or two more active players around to suffer with him, depending on who we draft, so at least the atmosphere might be a little better than it was in S53. By Season 55, Trombone should be with the club, and we could possibly be seeing our S54 second round pick and S55 first round pick joining as well.

Here's a picture of some important team executive to represent Smarch, Davos' new GM

I don't necessarily have expectations that we'll be competing for a Cup in Season 55, but I'm not going to say it's impossible. In recent seasons, we've seen free agents favoring the young rosters. In Season 51, it was the big four (Aleksi Koponen, Black Velvet, Unassisted, and Tyson Kohler) all signing with Calgary. The next season we saw Unassisted and William Covington sign over in New York. This past season, Kohler and Shawn Muller both signed with Stockholm. These teams had a lot of cap space to work with and high profile youngsters, making them ideal locations for veteran free agents. The same could possibly happen for Davos in S55 depending on the free agent class. The entirety of the core of the team will still be on their rookie contracts, making the team's use of cap space highly efficient. For me personally, it would be somewhat reminiscent of Diana Maxwell's career; she struggled on bad teams for her first two seasons, then saw Unassisted and Covington sign, as well as a trade for Tom Lincoln, and the team shot up to win the Continental Cup in S52. I'm not getting my hopes up for a Davos run in S55, and I honestly don't expect it, but it's not entirely out of the question either.

All in all, I'm excited for the future of this team. I think something about the story line of Smarch in the VHL makes me drawn to playing for him, and I think he could be someone that others would like to play for as well. He's one of the few remaining members who had a player in the VHL all the way back in Season 1. His presence has not been a constant, though. He's had players here or there who never really panned out, but it wasn't until Conner Low that he really reemerged. Truthfully, I don't actually know if his players from way back in the day were all that great. He did win a championship in each of the first three seasons, so he at least has that going for him, but I believe Conner Low is his first Hall of Fame player. I think there's something fascinating about an old-school member returning and being more prominent in the more recent era when so many of them fizzle out.
