After the departure of legendary goalies Remy Lebeau and last seasons MVP, Tuomas Tukio, VHL fans were wondering who the next superstar net-minder would be. That distinction has fallen upon long time Davos Dynamo goalie Lennox Moher who despite having only player 35 games this season, is number one in save %, GAA and shutouts. Despite some struggles earlier in his career, he was the Playoff MVP in season 38 and now looks like he has finally put it together this season. Moher will be a vital piece in the Dynamo's bid to win back to back Continental Cups and has his eyes on this seasons Aidan Shaw trophy as well.

Logan Laich is a polarizing figure around the VHL. People either love him or hate him but one thing that cannot be disputed is his improvement this season. After being dismal for the Americans in S38(20 points in 72 games), he has blossomed in Cologne and has scored 48 points through 54 games in S39. His greatest contributions though have been his hitting(2nd with 252) and his prowess with his fists. He has been involved in three fights this season and won two of them, making Logan Laich a dangerous man to cross. Opposing players, you have been warned.

The two leading candidates for this seasons Stolzschweiger Trophy(Top Rookie) seem to be Quebec's Azi Ali(L) and Cologne's Dimothenis Vlasis® after pre-season favorite Don Draper has fallen back in the title race. Vlasis has scored at a point per game pace for Cologne as well as logging the 5th best PIM total(171) and continued his impressive ways after a terrific minor league career with the Turku Outlaws. Ali who was with the Bern Royals last season has also played well for the rebuilding Meute, racking up 58 points through 66 games in season 39 and the young winger looks to be a vital cog in Quebec's improving future.

With the Season 39 Playoffs underway, the standout performer so far seems to be Riga's longtime goaltender, Mike Szatkowski Jr. Through 3 games of the Reign- Iron Eagles series, the "Szat in the Hat" has a .975 save percentage to go along with 2 shutouts and a 0.65 Goals against average. His 4 penalty minutes(both minor slashing) also show the desperation that Szatkowski is showing in his efforts to lead the Riga Reign back to Continental Cup glory, although the team will need more contributions from other key players such as McQueen, Fjorsstrom and Blade if they are to bring the trophy back to Latvia this season.

After a devastating 3-2 home loss against the Davos Dynamo in game 7 of their series, Riga's loyal fan-base was further rocked by the news that General Manager Mike Szatkowski had tendered his resignation with immediate effect. Rumors had been circulating during the season that this move may have been coming, but it nonetheless has had an impact on the Latvian city that the team calls home. Fan forums were divided on the matter with some thanking him for his loyal service, but others were far more harsh describing him as a traitor and calling for his head. The vacancy is expected to be filled from within the organization and an announcement is expected this week, in an effort to allow the Reign to start planning for season 40 and beyond.

Congratulations to the Season 39 Continental Cup winners, the New York Americans. After the disappointment of last years playoff failure, New York dominated the European champions HC Davos Dynamo four games to one to bring the cup back to North America. With scores tied at 2-2 in the final period, second line youngster Milos Denis retrieved a missed shot by winger Odin Tordahl and slapped the puck past a surprised Lennox Moher to seal the victory for New York and snap the recent domination by the Swiss franchise. The Americans will look to repeat as champions next season, although recent moves by Calgary along with the development of teams such as the Helsinki Titans in Europe, it will be no easy feat.

The first five selections in the Season 40 VHL Entry Draft went to just two teams, the Cologne Express and the Toronto Legion. Pictured above L-R are Thomas O'Malley(Cologne - Center), Mason Richardson(Cologne - DEF), Tyler Cote(Toronto - Center), Jerrick Poole(Toronto - DEF) and Sachimo Zoidberg(Toronto - Winger). These five outstanding prospects formed the core of one of the most talented draft classes in VHL history and had teams battling to add selections in order to secure their services. The top 4 selections are headed straight to the VHL and will look to develop their skills as they learn from their coaches and veteran line-mates.

The Quebec Meute were one of the busier teams during the off-season, in efforts to bolster an already solid roster. Several big names were added including Naomi Young, Felix Zamora and defenseman Matt Bentley(pictured above), all from former European powerhouse, the Davos Dynamo. This influx of talent from the swiss franchise sees the Meute become a legitimate contender in the North American conference and makes New York's bid for back to back Continental Cups even more difficult.

With a two game lead over the curiously competitive Iron Eagles, and four better then the struggling Reign, the uber-talented Helsinki Titans find themselves setting the pace in the European Conference this season. Led by recent additions Damon Tyrael and Willem Janssen and finally getting production from sophomore sensation Don Draper(all three pictured above), the Titans are a team on the rise. It comes as no surprise to many VHL fans though, as Helsinki's roster is positively dripping with talent at all the key positions. Draper, Svoboda, Wylde, Faraday, Miller and Salo are all generational players that any other franchise in the VHL would love to have on their roster. Is this their season? Who knows? But one thing is for certain; they'll give it one hell of a shot.

Lost among the favorites for the Season 40 Stolzschweiger Trophy, Vasteras winger Tyrone Williams is proving his doubters wrong. While the much more popular names of O'Malley, Richardson, Cote and Nyqvist were being discussed for the Rookie of The Year award, Williams was sitting back knowing that if he was given the right opportunity that he would produce. Thanks to a trade between Riga and Vasteras, his opportunity came and so have the points. He has amassed 52 points in 30 games which places him 3rd on the Pro Leaders rankings which is a sensational effort for a player in his rookie season. With projected roster changes coming for the Iron Eagles later this season however, his production may decrease and allow pre-season favorite Thomas O'Malley(42 Points) back into the race for the Stolzschweiger Trophy.

Conner Low of the New york Americans seems to be back on track for a record fifth Labatte Trophy as the VHL's best defenseman. Trailing former Davos and now Quebec star Matt Bentley for the first half of season 40, Low has started to build momentum and finds himself level on points(53) and only 2 behind Bentley in the Assists race. With New York finally starting to play to their potential it seems only bad luck or injury can prevent Low from claiming his fifth Labatte and his place in VHL history.

Niklas Lindberg, this seasons standout player has finally made his much anticipated move from Vasteras to Riga and will look to take the Reign to the promised land of another Continental Cup. The actual trade was one of the leagues worst kept secrets but it sees Riga add an offensive force that has played outstanding hockey this season, amassing 97 points though 51 games to set a scorching pace in the offensive categories. That will surely place Lindberg amongst the favorites for the Campbell, Szatkowski and Brooks trophies in what has been an outstanding season so far.

Quebec's Frank Chadwick will be a strong contender for the David Knight Trophy(Executive of the Year) after a multitude of moves that have drastically improved the S40 Quebec City roster. The acquisitions of Naomi Young, Matt Bentley, Felix Zamora, Lennox Moher and Willie Weber, as well as adding a first round pick via Cologne have seen Quebec guarantee themselves 2nd place in the North American conference and a real opportunity at a Devon Marlow-Marta Trophy as conference champion. Is season 40 the year of the Meute, or will the New York Americans again reign supreme?

The Victory Hockey League bid farewell this week to the long suffering Vasteras Iron Eagles. With a 3-2 win over European rivals, HC Davos Dynamo, the team said goodbye to their fans in style with rookie sensation Tyrone Williams scoring the last goal ever in Iron Eagles history. General Manager Benoit Prévost announced their relocation to Stockholm in a press conference and introduced the new team and logo to the VHL. They will now be known as the Stockholm Vikings and Prévost will be hoping for a renewed enthusiasm amongst the entire VHL fan base.

Led by inspirational Captain, Thomas Landry(above) the Calgary Wranglers found themselves in a battle with New York for the title of North American Conference Champion. It would have been a nice story for the Wranglers but their opponent failed to read the memo and defeated them 3-1 in game 5 of their series to advance to the Continental Cup series against the Riga Reign. Highlights included 2 goals and 11 hits from Xin Xie Xiao and 0 PIM from self-proclaimed hard man, Edwin Encarnacion.

The Riga Reign celebrate their victory in game 5 of the Continental Cup Playoffs. The Reign took the series 4-1 in a continuation of their playoff dominance(4-0 against Cologne) and once more took the Cup back to Europe. The core of the Reign roster were the key elements of the performance, helped by the additions of Lindberg and Olsen who came across in deadline trades. With teams such as Helsinki and Cologne on the rise, it was now or never for the European powerhouse and they duly delivered another title for their many loyal fans.

The Seattle Bears have selected goalie Niklaus Mikaelson at first overall in the Season 41 VHL Draft. The addition of a player such as Mikaelson means the Bears can now concentrate on improving their offensive firepower which is crucial in a league such as the VHL. He was the clear cut best player in the draft(not named Kowalski) and his selection surprised very few, with the exception of new Davos Center, Gifford Shock. Mikaelson is a key piece of Seattle's rebuild and GM Tyler Barabash can now breathe a sigh of relief to now have a franchise goaltender in place.

Quebec's Rami Jakobssen has exploded out of the gate this season, to lead all VHL rookies in scoring with 19 points(6 goals, 13 assists). Through 10 games, the young Meute left winger trails only established stars Tom Slaughter and Conner Low(22 and 21 points respectively) and looks like a surprise contender along with Seattle's Brady Stropko for the Stolzschweiger Trophy this season. Popular pre-season choices for the award including Jody 3 Moons and Sachimo Zoidberg have some work to do if they want to be in the hunt for the award by seasons end.

Riga's Mike Szatkowski Jr. has started the season in fine form, leading in several key statistics including Save %(.939), GAA(1.73) and Shutouts(6 in 19 games). The veteran goaltender is a key component in the Reign's run at back to back Continental Cups and along with strong performances from other Riga stars such as Brennan McQueen, Phil Villeneuve and the Gow's, the team stands a great chance of repeating their S40 heroics.

Somewhat surprisingly, Quebec's Bruno Wolf finds himself at #1 on the goal scoring list with 42 Goals in 42 games so far this season. The often understood winger has formed a terrific partnership with young Center Aksel Thomassen, that has seen the Meute solidify their 2nd place behind perennial North American powerhouse, the New York Americans. With the Meute's great start, Quebec's fans will hope the Bruno-Aksel combination will continue it's production for the remainder of the season and into the S41 playoffs.

With a combination of factors working in his favor, New York's Matt Bentley sees himself in strong contention for the Labatte Trophy this season. The former Dynamo and Meute star leads all defensemen with 74 points through 57 games so far in season 41 and continues to contribute in another great season by the Americans. With Conner Low moving to forward and other candidates such as Tony Stark moving to Quebec(with a likely drop in production), Bentley might never get a better opportunity to take home the leagues coveted award for top defenseman.
