HC Davos Dynamo Jersey Retirement

As the HC Davos Dynamo celebrate a VHL record eighth Continental Cup and seventh since the Season 11 relocation from Omsk, Russia to Davos, Switzerland, there couldn't be a better time to recognise the franchise's previous successes. We would like to immortalise the previous era's accomplishments by acknowledging the achievement and retiring the numbers of two integral Dynamo players from Season 27 and to Season 33.

Drafted with the 5th and 6th selections of the important S27 VHL Entry Draft, these two forwards embodied the the HC Davos Dynamo, leading the team to the Season 31 Continental Cup, numerous individual successes, prior to being traded together to the New York Americans for their final seasons as Davos entered a new generation.

Phil Rafter is one of the greatest scorers in VHL history, sitting 4th in all-time goals scored and 5th in points at the time of writing. Though these positions were claimed with yet another 100-point Season 34 performance, the bulk of Rafter's accomplishments took place with the Dynamo, where he plied his trade for seven seasons as Davos' top line center. Although Rafter has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame in his two first attempts, it is undoubtedly a matter of when and not if.

Rafter's constant linemate was David Smalling, the greatest two-way forward in VHL history. In his final season with Davos, Smalling set the all-time hits record and consolidated it with another strong performance in New York before being honoured with a first-ballot Hall of Fame induction. Additionally, Smalling's agent and former commissioner David Knight was the Dynamo's GM for just over two seasons, making the final moves to secure the championship of Season 31.

An honourable mention is also in order for goaltender Satan, the first overall selection in Season 27 and also a seven-season member of the Dynamo. Davos' continued success would not have been possible without him, but in a franchise where shrines are put up to the talents of Benoit Devereux and Daisuke Kanou, Satan did not quite make the cut to have his number of retirement. Nonetheless, Satan will go down in history as one of the three Davos greats, a list current starter Lennox Moher will aspire to join.
