As previously reported (https://vhlforum.com/topic/60886-match-fixing-scandal-charlie-paddywagon-investigated), the Nevada Gaming Commission launched an investigation into matching fixing allegations against Charlie Paddywagon. Our reporters have learned the scope of the investigation has widened significantly. NGC investigators are now looking into the “VHLM Fantasy Zone” (VHLMFZ), the organization that runs the weekly “Predict the Score” game that Paddywagon suspiciously won by betting against the Las Vegas Aces team he is a member of.

In a brief statement released by his lawyer, Richard Hertz, Charlie Paddywagon admitted to playing the VHLMFZ games but maintained he never threw a game to affect the outcome so his bets would win. Paddywagon states “Yes I did play the VHLMFZ games. The majority of VHLM players play them. Who I picked as the winner or the winning score in those games had no effect on my on-ice performance. Anyone suggesting otherwise knows nothing about me or my dedication to my teammates, my team, and the sport of hockey.”

As part of the investigation, the NGC submitted official questions to the staff of the VHLMFZ asking what steps the organization takes to ensure VHLM games are conducted fairly and not improperly affected by their weekly games like “Predict the Score” and “Pick’em.” Requests for comment from the VHLMFZ have been met with silence. An anonymous source, who requested to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the issue and they were not cleared to comment on the investigation, said that they were unaware of any protections in place by the VHLMFZ nor the VHLM that would prevent a player from throwing a game to win a bet.

For Charlie Paddywagon, the timing of this couldn’t be worse. Since the announcement of the allegations his Las Vegas Aces team was heartbreakingly swept from the first round of the VHLM playoffs. Soon the VHL draft will occur. Before the allegations, some predicted that Paddywagon would be the top defenseman picked in the draft. Now, many prognosticators are putting him in the mid to late 2nd round, possibly the 4th or 5th defenseman to be drafted. An anonymous VHL GM summed up the conventional wisdom, “Everyone worries about red flags. This one is a doozy. An open ended investigation into match fixing? No team wants that headache. I feel bad for the kid, he’s a good kid. Great player. He’s had a tough life and now to be on the verge of your dream and have something like this pop up could be devastating.” The GM continued, “Physically and talent wise, there’s nothing to be worried about. You just have to wonder how something like this affect his mind. Not to mention the fact if the allegations are true, he’ll probably be banned from hockey for life.”

The investigation appears to be moving at a lightning pace. Expect additional details to emerge as the investigation continues. The NGC has not set a date they expect the investigation to be completed, One official said “First we collect and assess all of the evidence of this case. Then we’ll be able to provide estimates on our expected completion date.” The Paddywagon camp is hoping the investigation will end soon and remove this dark cloud hanging over his head.
