A Partnership Analysis of the Hounds

By Jimmy Statistician

Introduction:

So as of writing this article the Mississauga Hounds have played 15 games in the VHLM and are currently 8-7-0. I thought it would be a good time to investigate into the partnerships that have arisen so far during these games. I have completed a partnership analysis of all the 51 goals scored by the Hounds during the 15 games so far. When a player assists on a goal the partnership between the player with the assist and the player with the goal have their partnership score increases by one.

Process:

Each game log was reviewed, and every goal and assist were entered into a table with the goal scorer on the x axis and the player with the assist on the y axis. When all the goals were accounted for the total between two players was then calculated.

(Table One)

Table One shows how the results were inputted. It can be seen for example that on the goals that Cody Smith has scored Callum MacElroy has assisted on five. To get the totals that are in Table Two the amounts from both sides are added up to use Cody Smith and Callum MacElroy as examples the five assists from Callum MacElroy on Cody Smith’s goals and the 2 assists from Cody Smith on Callum MacElroy’s goals are added and a total of 7 is their partnership score. Also note that both primary and secondary assists were given the same value, this included goals that were scored with only a primary assist.

Results:

Once the results were tallied up it was found that the highest scoring partnership was Callum MacElroy and Hulk Hogan, joining together to put on 13 points, this was then followed by Cody Smith and Hulk Hogan putting on 8 points, and finally Cody Smith and Callum MacElroy in third with 7 points. This can then be assumed that having these three players on the ice will give you the best chance of scoring. Dan Gles appears in the tied 4th spot twice once with Cody Smith and the other with Chett Bandy both on 5 points. You would then assume as Cody, Callum, Dan and Hulk all play different positions that giving them the most icetime would be extremely beneficial. One interesting result from this analysis was that Razy Funk the Goalie for the hounds has two assists already this season with both of those being scored by Callum MacElroy, there must be some chemistry between those two.

Limitations of the Model:

There are some limitations to the analysis, the first one would be ice time, this hasn’t been adjusted for so the higher scorers could be the ones getting more ice time. A more detailed analysis would need to be implemented to account for the ice time. Another limitation of the analysis would be the lines, as players that are on the same lines as each other are more likely to score together. This is because they are less likely to spend ice time with people in other lines.

Review: Holy crap. This is some next level stats work. Major props! I want to say that it's interesting to see how you put it together and you followed up on every detail really well.

I respected that you put the limitations into your work as well so we're not super swayed. Great work.

Thanks for the review my plan is to do more random stats down the line.
