The Micha Sage Biography [2/2]

Birth

Micha Sage was born on June 15, 2000 in Welland, Ontario, Canada. Tarin, his mother, was in her second year of law school when she gave birth to Micha; Luc, his father, had already given five years of service to the local police department. He was two weeks early, and despite his low birth weight, doctors were persistent that Micha would grow into a healthy baby boy. He was four pounds, seven ounces; 19 inches long at birth.

Early Childhood to Teen Years

The Sage family continued to live in Welland during Micha's first few years, as his mother eventually returned back to school a few months after his birth. Micha was introduced to hockey early on in his life, and was able to skate before he could actually walk. Whenever he was able to, Luc would take Micha to Toronto where they would watch Maple Leaf games. Micha was introduced to many sports early on, as Luc wanted him to have a lot of knowledge of different sports to follow. Micha would find a fond love for hockey, but baseball and Formula 1 were close favorites. He'd spend his nights, often past his bedtime, pretending to be a F1 driver, racing through the streets of Monaco toward the checkered flag; other times, he'd play in the backyard, running toward the high wooden fence that surrounded their yard as if he were running to catch a ball hit deep into the outfield.

At the age of five, Micha broke his jaw while skateboarding in their driveway, which also resulted in him losing two of his bottom teeth and chipping one of his two front teeth up top. The accident left him with a fear of being on a skateboard, and to make up for it he started to turn his attention to cars, and most importantly, hockey. His parents gave him the nickname of 'Whistler', the gap from the accident caused wind to produce a loud whistle sometimes when Micha spoke. At first, it bothered him to the point where he'd whisper to try and minimize the whistle sound, but soon enough, he wasn't ashamed and new eventually his teeth would fall out, and so, too, would the whistle.

In August of 2006, the family relocated to Kingston in order for Tarin to pursue her law career a bit more seriously. She accepted an offer from a small firm that were looking to build their team, and Luc was more than willing to change the scenery as he was able to transfer to the Kingston Police Department. The move left Micha leaving his friends, which he wasn't on board with, but that quickly faded as the excitement of being in a new city, with new faces, and a new school soon took over.

Micha excelled at most of the subjects in school, however, his ability to complicate even the smallest of tasks held him back at times. At school he met Tate Honday, who would eventually turn into Micha's best friend throughout their entire scholastic career. Micha and Tate were both the only child in their family, and their bond was described as 'brotherly' when asked how close they were growing up. During recess, the two would play the normal boy stuff: soldiers in battle, pirates at sea, and even pretending to be dogs in the streets of some made up city.

Not long after becoming best friends, both Micha and Tate swore no matter where one of them went, the other would go. If Micha had to go to the doctor to be seen for anything, be it something small or major, Tate was right there; Likewise, if Tate had to go see his grandmother in London, Ontario, Micha was invited along and traveled with. The duo stayed together throughout school, and after graduating, the two chose different paths. Tate chose to attend college at Boston College, while Micha chose to stay closer to home and get a job to save up money for college.

Entering Adult Life

For the next year after graduation, Micha kept in touch with Tate while maintaining a full time job at a local call center. The work wasn't rewarding, and while the room for growth was there, it wasn't a career Micha could see himself doing for very long. When he was able to, he'd travel to the states to spend a weekend hanging out with Tate. Tate had landed a spot on the Boston College Hockey roster, and had made quite a name for himself.

In the Fall of 2018, Micha decided he needed a new path for a job, and opted to take a huge pay cut and be a mechanic at Canadian Tire. Again, the job wasn't anything glamorous, but the pay was decent, and he was happy to actually be doing physical labor rather than sitting at a desk inputting data and assisting customers. He spent what time off he head managing his relationship with Tate, being supportive of his collegiate hockey career, while also taking time to hit the rink every now and then. Playing for a team in any organization, on any level, was the last thing on Micha's mind.

Even though he wasn't actively playing, Micha spent a lot of time in the gym and committing to a workout routine that he was able to keep up with. It was an added bonus that his job had him lugging around tires and other car parts, adding that he worked out three times a week, his muscle was never in danger of going away. He entered a local charity race for cancer, in which he ran three miles to help raise money for a local hospital and to help cancer research. Finishing in the top ten of the event, he was able to pick which hospital he chose to help, and which cancer charity he could send the donation to. This ranked pretty high on his list of achievements in his life thus far.

Micha didn't party much, and he rarely left his apartment except to go to work, workout, or attend events. He didn't have a girlfriend and wasn't really in the market for one. He was happy with being single, doing his own thing, and only having himself to really worry about. He did, however, spend a lot of time with his family when he could. He had friends who would invite him out for drinks after work, and Micha would generally decline.

Relationship With His Parents

Micha would visit his parents any chance he could, and it was often. He and his father would try to attend as many Maple Leaf games as they could, even landing some pretty good seats for a Blue Jays game. Whether they were attending sporting events, or just having dinner, Micha and his father were close.

His mother was busy with her law firm, and though weekends were free from work, she often took work home and worked clear through until the new work week started. The rare off time she had, Micha would visit, ask about work, and then let her relax as she saw fit. She'd question him about finding a nice girl to settle down with, which Micha would meet with the changing of topic in hopes she'd catch the hint and leave it alone.

Trying For The VHLM

Early Summer of 2019, Micha started gaining interest of some local coaches for various colleges in the region. It wasn't something he had really given thought to, but he eventually went out and practiced with a team. The coach suggested he try to make it to a camp in a few weeks, telling Micha that there would be scouts from the VHL and VHLM in attendance, and it would be a good excuse to lace up his skates.

Micha attended the camp with zero expectations of actually garnering any attention. While the VHL scouts didn't confront him, a few VHLM scouts came forward and told him to try and make himself available for the upcoming Despersial Draft. Micha was elated that he was getting attention from scouts. He put in more work, attending smaller camps and creating a workout routine to help improve his game, continuing on his path leading up to the upcoming draft.

Review: Incredible job in going in depth the the player’s relationships in his family and friends that makes him sound very relatable in a lot of aspects to the reader. I feel like the “Whistler” knew he was going to be a hockey player at that age given he already looks the part haha also good use of photos however I would like to see Micha in his current state prepping for the draft! Well written and looking forward in reading more of your stuff!

Review: Honestly one of the more in depth biographies I've read, I think you really tied it together with all of the anecdotal stories about skateboarding, or his childhood friend. Nice job setting it apart from other bios on the site.
