TheLastOlympian07 2,388
Making A Case For The Hall Matthew Pogge Regular Season 276GP / 181-65-23 / 2.48 GAA / 0.909 SV% / 17SO Playoffs 32GP / 17-13-2 / 2.76 GAA / 0.910 SV% / 2SO Maxim Desny Regular Season 343GP / 144-167-20 / 3.29 GAA / 0.908 SV% / 12SO Playoffs 28GP / 12-9-2 / 3.17 GAA / 0.930 SV% / 2SO Robert Sharpe Regular Season 274GP / 144-100-21 / 3.10 GAA / 0.889 SV %/ 14 SO Playoffs 15 GP / 8-5-1 / 3.21 GAA / 0.885 SV% / 0 SO Above, are the numbers of goaltenders who played in with, against and who were drafted in the same draft class as Mr. Robert Sharpe. These goaltenders also happen to be in the Victory Hockey League Hall of Fame. Robert Sharpe had a stat line that reads like this 274 GP / 144-100-21 / 0.889 SV% / 3.10 G.A.A / 14 SO. Those by no means are bad stats nor are they great but if we compare them to these aforementioned goaltenders, we begin to see maybe Sharpe isn’t that far off of being in the VHL HoF. Maxim Desny played 6 VHL Seasons, while Matthew Pogge and Robert Sharpe both played in 4. Comparison in Games Played 1. Maxim Desny ~ 371 Games Played (343 Regular Season, 28 Playoffs) 2. Matthew Pogge ~ 308 Games Played (276 Regular Season, 32 Playoffs) 3. Robert Sharpe ~ 289 Games Played (274 Regular Season, 15 Playoffs) The total games played by each goaltender reads like this, Maxim Desny leads the way with 371, Matthew Pogge is next with 308 with Robert Sharpe coming in a 289. You see the big difference in total games played with Desny and Pogge having 82 and 19 games in hand, but this is mostly due to the fact that Desny played until Season 6 and Pogge being on better teams in his career. If we go deeper we will find that Sharpe played in 2 less regular season games than Matthew Pogge. Comparison in Wins 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 198 Wins (181 Regular Season, 17 Playoffs) 2. Maxim Desny ~ 156 Wins (144 Regular Season, 12 Playoffs) 3. Robert Sharpe ~ 152 Wins (144 Regular Season, 8 Playoffs) 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 62% Winning Percentage 2. Robert Sharpe ~ 53% Winning Percentage 3. Maxim Desny ~ 42% Winning Percentage The total number of wins by each goaltender reads like this, Matthew Pogge with 198, Maxim Desny with 156 and Robert Sharpe with 152. I’m never one who has been good with numbers but in 82 less games, Robert Sharpe has just 4 less wins than Maxim Desny, this to also alludes to fact that Desny also played on some weak teams, but 82 is quite a bit of games in hand. Matthew Pogge has won 62% of his games; Robert Sharpe has won 53% while Maxim Desny has won 42% Comparison in Losses 1. Maxim Desny ~ 176 Losses (167 Regular Season, 9 Playoffs) 2. Robert Sharpe ~ 105 Losses (100 Regular Season, 5 Playoffs) 3. Matthew Pogge ~ 78 Losses (65 Regular Season, 13 Playoffs The total number of losses by each goaltender reads like this, Maxim Desny 176, Robert Sharpe 105 and Matthew Pogge with 78. As well look deeper into these stats, Sharpe wasn’t a bad goalie at all. He unfortunately wasn’t on great teams. He has only 27 more losses that Matthew Pogge. That is not very many in hindsight considering he played for the sad sack Stockholm Rams, while Matthew Pogge played for a Scotty Campbell led Vasteras IK. Comparison in Overtime / Shootout Losses 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 25 Overtime / Shootout Losses (23 Regular Season, 2 Playoffs) 2. Robert Sharpe ~ 22 Overtime / Shootout Losses (21 Regular Season, 1 Playoffs) 2. Maxim Desny ~ 22 Losses (20 Regular Season, 2 Playoffs) 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 8% OTL Percentage 2. Robert Sharpe ~ 8% OTL Percentage 3. Maxim Desny ~ 6% OTL Percentage It is interesting to say the least, that Sharpe and Pogge have the same percentage, of course I rounded up for Sharpe and down for Pogge but to average out at 8% is pretty weird. This proves that they gave their teams a chance to get to win. Comparison in Goals Against Average 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 2.62 Goals Against Average (2.48 Regular Season, 2.76 Playoffs) 2. Robert Sharpe ~ 3.16 Goals Against Average (3.10 Regular Season, 3.21 Playoffs) 3. Maxim Desny ~ 3.23 Goals Against Average (3.29 Regular Season, 3.17 Playoffs) People don’t like to compare G.A.A because it will differ from time to time depending on what team you play for. I for one do not care if you don’t like it because it is very important in my opinion. Keeping your G.A.A low is important obviously because it shows how much goals you let in during either the regular season or playoffs. As you may see I averaged out the G.A.A between the goalies and put them in chronological order. The top two goalies had decent regular season G.A.A but in the playoffs they went up albeit not by much, but still went up. Desny on the other hand, his went down so it shows who really showed up to play in the playoffs. Comparison in Save Percentage 1. Maxim Desny ~ 0.919 Save Percentage (0.908 Regular Season, 0.930 Playoffs) 2. Matthew Pogge ~ 0.910 Save Percentage (0.909 Regular Season, 0.910 Playoffs) 3. Robert Sharpe ~ 0.887 Save Percentage (0.889 Regular Season, 0.885 Playoffs) This is the stat everyone loves to compare goalies with and while I agree it’s important, it’s not the tell all sign of a good goalie. It’s like 65% important in my honest opinion. See from playing on such scrubby teams, Desny leads the pack with a combined 0.919 save percentage. What blew my mind is that it was just a dismal 0.908 in the regular season to a mind blowing 0.930 in the playoffs. That’s a goalie that stood on his head when the playoffs came around. Pogge had a very respectable, 0.910 which is very respectable. He was consistent throughout his career with a 0.909 in the regular season and a 0.910 in the playoffs. Sharpe on the other hand had a very dismal 0.887 save percentage. This is not very good at all, in hindsight, he would save just 88.7 of 100 shots. This may be the determining factor in which Sharpe doesn’t get into the HoF. Comparison in Shutouts 1. Matthew Pogge ~ 19 Shutouts (17 Regular Season, 2 Playoffs) 2. Maxim Desny ~ 14 Shutouts (12 Regular Season, 2 Playoffs) 3. Robert Sharpe ~ 14 Shutouts (14 Regular Season, 0 Playoffs) Shutouts are a very interesting stat, it doesn’t happen that often but when it does, it’s because the goalie was spectacular. Pogge leads the way with 19 career shutouts including 2 in the playoffs while Desny and Sharpe are tied with 14. In my opinion Desny gets the tiebreaker because he shutout 2 teams in the playoffs. Awards Matthew Pogge Season 1 Continental Cup (VHL Champion) with the Vasteras IK Season 1 Vladimir Kostka Trophy (European Champion) with the Vasteras IK Season 1 Howe Trophy (Playoff Most Valuable Player) Season 1 Tretiak Trophy (Best Goalie) Season 1 European Conference All-Star Season 2 Victory Cup (Best Regular Season Record) with the Vasteras IK Season 2 Vladimir Kostka Trophy (European Champion) with the Vasteras IK Season 2 European Conference All-Star Season 2 Team Switzerland Member Season 3 Tretiak Trophy (Best Goalie) Season 3 European Conference All-Star Season 4 European Conference All-Star Vasteras Retired Matthew Pogge’s Number 33 Maxim Desny Season 2 Tretiak Trophy (Best Goalie) Season 2 Messier Trophy (Top Leader) Season 2 European Conference All-Star Season 2 Team Scandinavia Member Season 3 Vladimir Kostka Trophy (European Conference Champion) with the Helsinki Titans Season 3 Sam Pollock Memorial Trophy (Executive of the Year) Season 3 Howe Trophy (Playoff Most Valuable Player) Season 3 European Conference All-Star Season 4 Team Scandinavia Member Season 4 Silver Medalists with Team Scandinavia Season 5 Vladimir Kostka Trophy (European Conference Champion) with the Helsinki Titans Season 5 Tretiak Trophy (Best Goalie) Season 5 European Conference All-Star Helsinki Titans Retired Maxim Desny’s Number 20 Robert Sharpe Season 2 Bronze Medalists with Team Canada Season 3 Continental Cup Winner with Calgary Wranglers Season 3 Victory Cup Winner with Calgary Wranglers Season 3 North American Conference All Star Season 4 North American Conference All Star This is another thing that may hold Robert Sharpe out of the HoF is his awards. He doesn’t have very much which is due to his ‘ban’ in Season 1. This ban I’m talking about, as you may all know, is when he got caught with steroids. The whole season he wasn’t allowed to practice. That is a fair amount of TPE to miss out on. Overall Overall, I think after all this, the two major things keeping Robert Sharpe out of the VHL Hall of Fame is Save Percentage and Awards. Other than that, he is at par or even better in some categories than Matthew Pogge and Maxim Desny. All in all, Robert Sharpe may never get the recognition he deserves for sticking it out after a hefty ban in Season 1. Guest Svoboda_3
Content: 3/3 1,545 words with the stats/awards, 932 without. I loved that you took a different direction with your Media Spot this week. You may have a slight argument when it comes to Sharpe, but much like Pete Rose in baseball, when you cheat, the induction committee looks the other way. Also save percentage is so much more important than GAA, simply for the fact that a save percentage reflects a goaltender specifically, while the GAA represents the team somewhat.Grammar: 1.75/2 Just a slight deduction here, but probably nothing to worry about. I based this deduction on the word count minus the stats, so in all the writing portions, this is what I discovered. Not bad at all, but just a variety of smaller things. reads = read 308 with = 308, with in a 289 = in at 289 As well look = As we look sack Stockholm Rams = sack Stockholm Rams team 3.16 Goals = 3.16 Goals (spacing) how much goals = how many goals up albeit = up, albeit respectable, 0.910 which is very respectable. = respectable 0.910, which is very good (no comma needed after the first respectable, but needed after the 0.910 and try and avoid using the same word in the same sentence) playoffs while = playoffs, while "This is another thing that may hold Robert Sharpe out of the HoF is his awards" = Another thing that may hold....are his lack of awards." Appearance: 1/1 A picture would have done some justice, but it presented like a HOF article.Overall: 5.75/6 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/7544-claimedmaking-a-case-for-the-hall/#findComment-67977 Share on other sites
Commissioner Beketov 9,025 Posted April 30, 2014 Commissioner Share Posted April 30, 2014 Thanks for the kind words. Ultimately though it comes to voting and because of that ban in Season 1 I have a hunch I won't even be on the ballot any time in the near future. TheLastOlympian07 2,388
that does suck, just imagine if you didn't get a whole season ban. In hindsight was it deserved? maybe until trade deadline, but a whole season is a lot. Also Sloboda, the thing is with Pete Rose, he wasnt acutally cheating was he? isnt it just betting is why people tend to look the other way with him? Higgins 3,618
Interesting... Maybe Rose gets in once Selig is done, but it's a tough argument. I'm actually for Rose to be in the Hall. Maybe that's not the best example. I probably could have used Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire as a better reference. Hell, it wasn't even what Kevin had in mind initially. He was going to PT ban me for like 2 weeks and then everyone chipped in without fully understanding the charges and it became a whole big thing. It is what it is though, shit happened a long time ago. I'd love to see Sharpe in the hall but I honestly never expected it and still don't so it's not like I'm disappointed at this point. As far as my goalies go I think Young deserves it way more than Sharpe but is rather underrated. TheLastOlympian07 2,388
It was unclear but many found him guilty of betting on his own games and throwing them for money Well thats unfortunate. I dont think itd be that bad if it was different games? still bad but not like doing it to your own games In hindsight I still don't think it was deserved. Hell, it wasn't even what Kevin had in mind initially. He was going to PT ban me for like 2 weeks and then everyone chipped in without fully understanding the charges and it became a whole big thing.
