Tyler's Season 39 Mock Draft (As of June 11, 2014)

As it stands, the Season 39 Draft looks to be one of the best in a long time. Teams can either make or break their franchise and their futures in this draft. A core can be easily built off of just a few draft picks in this draft and obviously this bodes well for a team like Helsinki who hold many of the early picks. The following is based on nothing but a gut feeling and what I think makes sense for those teams in particular. As always, please don't take anything personally if you are not ranked as highly as you believe!

1st Overall : Helsinki Titans (From Quebec): Jackson Miller (Moscow Red Wolves)

To nobodies surprise, Jackson Miller will be the first overall pick. He is lighting up the VHLM and now that he is with Moscow, has a great shot at being a contributor in a long playoff run in the VHLM. Miller has 85 points in the VHLM so far this year and is a key player on a complete Moscow team and will have to continue this production if they are to make a playoff run this year. Miller is the safest pick at number one and a franchise like Helsinki can begin their rebuild at full speed right away  by adding a player with the potential of a Miller.

More than any other forward in the draft, Miller has the potential to be franchise and league changing immediately.

2nd Overall : Helsinki Titans: Koji Yamazaki (Turku Outlaws)

There is no denying that the VHL loves legitimate first generation players and that is exactly what Yamazaki is. The Japanese stud defender is not a player with amazing pedigree or anything, but what he is is hard working, honest and the kind of person who you enjoy playing with. Yamazaki is a two way defenseman who has a great fluid skating motion though some wonder if he is as physical as you may want out of a number one defender. The fact is, with so many picks in the first round the Titans can afford to take a risk on a hard working player that can blossom in to a very good player in the mold of a Daniel Braxton.

3rd Overall : Cologne Express: Mikkel Boomgaarden (Bern Royals)

If the Titans go with the Japanese player as I expect, then Boomgaarden will be the one who slips in to the palms of the Express and they will be the happier for it. Boomgaarden has a lot more pedigree than Yamazaki though his potential may be a little bit lower all things considered. He is something of a safer pick than Yamazaki, but he will be a solid addition to the Express and will be the franchise defenseman every team needs so long as he continues development. He is also a two way defender but is a bigger body presence than Yamazaki, though he lacks a serious first pass.

Boomgaarden is a safe pick, but may slip if only because of sexier picks ahead of him.

4th Overall : Calgary Wranglers: Tyson Stokes (Brampton Blades)

The Wranglers are led by the leagues longest serving executive and if nothing else, Jason Glasser is always good at finding talent, not only on the ice but guys he gets along with off the ice. Glasser is an easy going, matriculate kind of leader and I believe Stokes fits in with his franchises plans better than anyone left. Stokes is a centreman and as everyone in the league knows, centres play a bigger role in the scoring in the league than almost any other position. If your MVP is a forward, chances are very high he is a centre. Stokes is the kind of dynamic player who can either play in the VHL right away or spend another season int he minors for seasoning depending on how he develops at this time. He has an impressive 62 points so far this year and is a physical, two way forward who can be an immediate franchise changing player.

5th Overall : Helsinki Titans (From Seattle): Sam Keeler (Brampton Blades)

Usually, players who put up just 8 points in 47 games do not get ranked this high, but hear me out. Keeler has pedigree, potential and drive. Right now, he is strong power forward who is playing more of a physical style of game with Brampton, but as he develops and grows out of his shell and get used to his size, Sam will no doubt be a force in the VHL. The league has not seen many true power forwards in recent years, and it will be interesting to see how teams attempt to stop the 235 pound man from Wisconsin. He has a physical dominance that no other player can really match, and for that he will be selected higher than many will assume. He will be a very special player in the VHL, believe that.

Thank you for reading, and next week I will look at picks 6-10 and so on and so forth!

Well this one is a little different so I like it. Can't wait for the second half of round 1.

I'm kind of writing it from a realism standpoint tbh. I imagine unless Borgina stats doing PT again he won' go this high, but in real life he would still be up there. Hence why I don't mention TPE or practice hours. In reality I'd likely take Yamazaki first just because defense>>

Definitely going to be an exciting draft with all the talent in it. This was a pretty good read and you raised some good points. While Miller is doing great, I don't think he'll go first. I also question whether or not the Titans would take Yamazaki over forward prospects since they already have a solid defensive core being built.

Molholt got them all. Just a few dumb things but based on the length, I think .25 is fair.

Looking good.
