RomanesEuntDomus 442
Cologne Express Prospect Watch Welcome to our second edition of the Cologne Express Prospect Watch! After taking a look at all the prospects currently in the Express system for the first time midway through last season, we now return to them as the Season 38 campaign is nearing it’s end. Some of the players have since moved on to the big club while others remain in the minors, some have shown continuous progress while the VHL dream is slowly starting to fade away for those who haven’t been willing to put in the work necessary to become a great player as of late. And a whole bunch of new faces have entered the system through the last VHL Entry Draft. Today we will take a look at all these Express prospects currently playing in the minors, and we hope that you will enjoy the read! Mikael Svensson – Saskatoon Wild When the Express drafted Mikael Svensson he was labeled a typical “boom-or-bust” prospect, a player who had shown a lot of potential and flashes of brilliance so far, but who also lacked consistency and showed some commitment issues. Now, almost two years later, it seems like Svensson is approaching bust-territory, even though he has put up great numbers in the VHLM. The young Swede scored more than a goal per game (65 in 61) for the Saskatoon Wild this season and has an impressive 120 points to his name, but it seems like he is only able to put up numbers like this against the weaker competition in the VHLM. He has disappointed in recent training camps where he had to compete with stronger, more experienced players and has not logged a lot of training hours. Svensson still has time, but as of now it seems like he is perfectly fine with just being a good player in a weak league and his VHL-chances are getting slimmer by the day. Kai Randal – Yukon Rush Kai Randal’s biggest issue on draft day was consistency and even though this hasn’t changed much since then, the bald and beautiful winger is still a legitimate VHL-prospect for the Express. The coaching stuff in both Cologne and Yukon has seen periods of great dedication as well as weeks were he was barely noticeable at all from Randal, but the pure skill is certainly still there. Randal is a gifted playmaker with 73 of his 86 points this season being assists and he isn’t just one-dimensional offensive player either, showcased by his 62 shot blocks which is by far the best among forwards on his team. Next season could be a make or break year for Randal, so far the Express have been very patient with the likeable youngster, but if he ever wants to become more than a depth-player in the VHL, he will have to pick it up soon. Kez Kincaid – Turku Outlaws One player whose development the Express are very happy with is Kez Kincaid, the last pick in the 2nd round in the Season 37 Draft. A true sleeper who was overlooked by a lot of teams on draft day, Kincaid has since developed very nicely and is getting closer and closer to becoming a VHL-ready player. He will probably need one more year in the VHLM but both his numbers and his all-around game have consistently improved over the last two years. With 85 points in 59 games, including 38 goals, and an impressive 152 Hits, Kincaid is putting up career numbers this season. If he keeps working like that, Kincaid might even force his way onto the VHL-roster come training camp, he is certainly getting close to being ready for the big leagues. Kristian Stormborn – Bern Royals For a short time following the Season 37 draft it looked like Kristian Stormborn might be THE biggest steal the VHL has seen in a long time. The 3rd rounder came into his first training camp showing a lot of dedication and he continued to show a lot of promise early in the season. Since then the smallish winger has tailed off though, as of late he has barely put in any practice hours and while he was a decent producer for his team (95 points in 61 games), he is also a -13 on a rather deep team and doesn’t project to be more than a good minor league scorer right now. This was our look at the prospects from the Season 37 Draft, the Season 38 prospects will follow next week!
