Roberto Luongo: No. 3 winningest goalie retires after 19 NHL seasons

Goaltender Greg Eagles announced his retirement at the age of 26 on Monday, after playing 1 VHLM season and 8 VHL seasons. This was a mandated league retirement as Eagles will now look forward to watching his son, Tom Eagles, play when this season ends.

"I really enjoyed my 8 seasons here in the VHL which was split between Vancouver and Riga. I enjoyed both organizations and won accolades with both teams. In Vancouver I won multiple awards in Season 70 including the Greg Clegane and Aidan Shaw and 2 seasons later in season 72 with Riga I ended up winning the cup and Daisuke Kanou " Said Eagles “ I think I had a great career and will be looking to end this season as a cup champion as well”

While the season is not fully over yet to determine Eagles final stats, as of right now Eagles is sitting at 257 Wins, 154 losses and 48 OTL with a 2.55 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 463 games with the Vancouver Wolves and Riga Reign. While not a HoF career, it was still a very successful career.

This season has been one of his worst in terms of GAA and it was the right time to step away from the game. Many fans are saying 8 seasons is not enough, but this gives the opportunity for others to step up and get a chance to be a starter.

“ I get to enjoy one more season playing with our great team-mates in Riga and then I will become a full time supporter of my son who recently joined the VHLM “ Greg said “ I will be doing what I can to help him and out and cheer him on as he climbs the ranks as one of the best defenseman in the league. I was really happy that he decided to start his VHLM career exactly where I did, in San Diego”

Eagles, a native of Wroclaw. Poland., was the 19th overall pick of the Wolves in Season 67. Many have touted him to be a steal with that pick and a later mock re-draft this season had him going potentially at #4. It is rare to get a cup winning and multiple award winner so late in the draft but Greg proved all his doubters wrong.

“ You know, I always thought I was better then 19th overall but in the end things worked out great” Said Greg “ I was put on a cup contending team right away and started off within a winning culture. While one of my regrets was never winning a cup with Vancouver as a starter, playing there for 4 seasons really set me up with a winning attitude and helped me be the best I can be to win a cup with Riga”

Eagles retirement brought an outpouring of support on social media, from current and former teammates, fans, coaches and past GM’s

“ I guess all I have left to say is Thank You to everyone that supported and believed in me. I hope my play repaid the faith all of you have shown in me and I look forward to seeing the Eagles legacy continue in the VHL”

Eagles!!! Great career. Content about retirement, good player content.

Formatting is a bit messy in terms of spread and mostly mixing in the interview quotes. Ideally could use bold/italics or different formatting for the quotes. Included pics though so that is a nice plus to the start of the article or a reference.
