Blades of Steel: Episode 16 (Legalizing Marijuana)

Running solo like the Green Lantern, except not in tights.

I covered questions given to me and the league roundup. As well as PTI!

Graders Note: 40+ Minutes

Final Song: Beast - Timeflies

Content: 3/3 -  Great intro - despite what you thought of it. Although come to think of it, I haven't listened to a VHL podcast in over a... year?.

Liked how you started with a hockey sound clip and then went into the game intro song. Saolid.
Also solid standings update. Very informative because I haven't looked at the standings since around the 40-game mark.

You are old.

Vasteras is a 2-trick pony? LOL true. Riga should take that series - Riga are definitely the favourites gtfo!

You didn't mention Villeneuve in the hitting category? Holy shit, you may actually know what you are talking about.

Interesting sponsoring ideas, but fuck commercialism so bun this section - but i guess it does change things up a bit

Questions:

Mostly VHL related - the chat feature was nice, but I think it will (or should) generate more posts on the board itself. Bring back the PMs baby!
Allegiance to sports team shouldn't just be location based. But I do hate flip-floppers and bandwagoners. I do, however, believe in the neutral fans - to watch the sport for the pure entertainment of it

1857 Sheffield United btw!

Smoking the green banana is less harmful to the body than alcohol - legalize it and tax the shit out of it.

Little Kenny's running around? I want your son and/or daughter to join the VHL pronto.Get on that.

LOL so you are saying that sterling was the best commissioner! I love sterling.

Riga vs Vateras = Disvasterous for the eagles

Wait... Victor's STEPPING DOWN!? oh.. only as Davos GM.. lol I thought we had a mutiny on our hands

Brazil? Boo GO ME-HE-CO!!!

Very entertaining. Thanks for doing this.

Professionalism: 2/2 - Nothing major here. A lot of the standard um's and ah's, er's and orgasm noises.

Editing: 1/1 - Very minor technical difficulties. Otherwise, sounds bytes and music both used. GG plz RE

FINAL: 6/6

I don't see it. USA doesn't have the ability to defend or apply pressure with their midfield, and teams will eat them up over that.

You guys didn't exactly eat up Ghana, and there was more of a competitive incentive in that match. I think USA lines up pretty defensively, nips a goal against the run of play, and holds Germany to 1. At the very least, a 2-1 loss, which is probably also enough.

What is with this belief by everyone that Ghana is some weak team? Ghana have a very good midfield and they have a mix of veterans and youth that allow them to keep themselves in every match. USA beat them, but Ghana controlled the bulk of play. The same thing happened in the Germany game. I get that USA fans are excited about their team, but let's not going fishing in water too deep to handle here.

I don't watch this hobby of soccer that you guys play but I'm pretty sure USA has the best team out there.  By my old definition of sport where you must NOT have subjective scoring AND have an actual time limit I don't consider baseball or soccer sports at all.

I really want the US to do well in the World Cup.

This may seem an odd thing to say for an ENglish Canadian but the deeper the US go into the tournament the more money will be pumped into soccer in the US. Because Canada tend to act on impulse to whatever the states are doing, that will have a ripple effect in Canada and more money will be available for soccer programs here.

I think most of the world would like to see Canada in the World cup again at some point, so I'm all for it!

I hardly think Ghana is weak. Prior to the tournament I actually thought Ghana had a better shot at pulling 2nd than Portugal, and certainly better than USA. That said, there was nothing in my previous post indicating a belief that Ghana was weak, or that even could be misconstrued (your favorite tactic) to indicate that. I said there was more of a competitive incentive in that match, which was true. At the time, a win would have locked up qualification for you, yet you only drew. In this match, you don't really have any reason to win, why should I believe you'll do it, when you couldn't do it when it actually meant something?

Why wouldn't we go into thinking we have to win though? You realize we aren't guaranteed 1st or 2nd and barring some really freaky shit could actually be 3rd place. If you finish 1st you face Algeria, Russia or S.Korea. Seeing as S.Korea look like long shots to beat Belgium it's either Russia or Algeria. Algeria had a great game against S.Korea, but the S.Korean defence is like swiss cheese, and cutting through it is done with ease. So yes there is incentive to win tomorrow against the USA because if not we'd face Belgium who are a very good team.

Once again though didn't touch the midfield comment, USA is weak in that category and you can't be when facing teams like Germany. I'm not saying well win, but I am saying that USA won't go far with the performance they had against Portugal.

A draw and you'd still win the group, facing the easier team (not Belgium). There is very little incentive for Germany to outright win. Obviously they'll play for the win, all teams do, but if you're an individual German player in this situation, do you go in for the risky tackle with a 5% chance of injury, or do you let it slide and just defend standing up? A handful of those split second decisions, not having to go all out, can leave the door open for the draw. Even if the draw doesn't materialize, winning by more goals does nothing for you, and you won't have a reason to pile on like you did on Portugal, which also frees up possibilities for USA. You guys had, simply put, more percentages riding on the Ghana game than you do on the USA game. Going into the USA game, you qualify barring some really bizarre results. You'd have to lose (outright lose, against USA) and on top of that, whittle away the whole GD you have on Ghana and Portugal. There's like a 0.2% chance Germany doesn't go through. Additionally, there's about a 85% change Germany takes top of the group, considering the draw as well as the win will do it. There's not the pressure, and while it won't show in overall play, it very well could be in the minds of some of the guys and could influence some split second decisions. Anyone who's watched Michael Bradley this WC knows how important a split second decision can be.

I didn't touch the midfield comment because I never brought up the midfield in the first place. I don't claim USA is the more talented team, nor do I disagree with you on the fact that the USA has a weaker midfield. I also don't disagree with you on the fact that this font color is black, yet I didn't feel the need to bring it up, because it doesn't really matter for what we're saying. It's entirely possible to get a draw as a weaker team, we've seen it all over the place.

Come on Jason, at least acknowledge why it was brought up. Thats such a "high horse" way of assessing that comment and anyone can see it. You said they will draw and I told you why I don't see that being likely, which is because of the midfield of the USA. So it does apply, but seeing as I said it, yeah I guess it doesn't hold any weight. Whatever, I'm somewhat done with this because you kind of made your argument seem more important and shot down anything I said. Anyways, Episode 17 comes out next week!
