I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Helsinki from Steezy selling me hard on the Titans in my time with Bratislava in S31, to the talks with Higgy leading up to the S32 VHL draft to winning the Funk in S34, putting up 76 points after a dismal 14 in my rookie campaign. The playoff losses to Riga in S32 and S33 hurt like hell, especially in S33 but just made us stronger as a team and helped us win it all in S34 when I scored three of the four game winners in the finals, including the game 7 OT winner. Breaking 100 points in S35 was a plus but losing to the Meute was heartbreaking, and this season was disappointing, after many successful years in Helsinki. My individual performance was nice, leading the league in assists but we just didn't have the depth to compete for a cup and it was time for the rebuild to commence. I thank Higgy and Steezy for helping mold me into the player that I am today as well as all the guys who I had the chance to play with in Helsinki. I look forward to the new experience and challenges in Toronto and hope to bring some success and leadership to the club, starting this new chapter in my career. Now lets go win some cups!

The Season 37 VHL Entry Draft is quickly approaching, and with that, we will be taking a walk done memory lane to bring you a special presentation. It has been five years since the Season 32 VHL Entry Draft took place, and during our show, we will be revisiting that draft class. We will determine some of the players that ended up being busts, and ones that have semi-busted. Following those determinations, we will be re-drafting from the remaining players. These are players who have played in the VHL for the majority of their careers and have been able to make an impact for their club (with the exception of one player). There are 13 players in this grouping, thus the re-draft will consist of 13 picks. We will start with the #1 overall pick and work our way down to #13. These are always fun for everyone so lets get to it. The Toronto Legion are on the clock with the 1st overall pick. 1. Anatoli Zhumbayev – RW (+2) VHL Stat Line: 360 GP – 168 G - 231 A - 399 P - +227 - 644 hits - 114 SB Training Hours: 772 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 3rd overall The Toronto Legion step up to the podium and make a tough decision between the top two prospects in the draft class. They were in the middle of a rebuild at the time of the S32 draft and needed both forwards and defensemen. In the end, they choose the most offensive talented player in the draft and a guy who works his ass off night after night. Anatoli Zhumbayev has accumulated the most training hours of anyone from this draft class and has picked up a Dustin Funk Trophy as well as a Alexander Beketov Trophy to go with a Continental Cup. He has the potential to add a Scott Boulet Trophy to his collection, following the S36 awards show. He has also proven to be a clutch performer during the playoffs, scoring 6 game-winning goals including 3 in the Continental Cup Finals in S34, and the overtime goal in game 7 of that series to help Helsinki hoist the Continental Cup. 2. Niklas Valiq – D (-) VHLM Stat Line: 72 GP – 15 G - 101 A - 116 P - +50 - 221 hits - 121 SB VHL Stat Line: 288 GP – 41 G - 265 A - 306 P - +140 - 880 hits - 475 SB Training Hours: 718 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 2nd overall Quebec City owns the second overall pick and are ecstatic to see that the guy who is number one on their list is still available. They do not hesitate to select the best defenseman in the draft, and brother of Alexander, Niklas Valiq. Valiq arguably could have been the #1 selection in the re-draft, not far behind Zhumbayev in both training hours and VHL points. He has been a monster on the blue line as well, averaging 220 hits per year and about 120 shots blocked. He has raised the Coninental Cup on one occasion and is the favourite to take home the Sterling Labatte Trophy at the S36 awards show. Valiq and Zhumbayev have both proven that they are now among the VHL's elite but Valiq wanted to play with his brother and that is why the Toronto Legion pass on him. 3. Jack Sound – D (-2) VHL Stat Line: 360 GP – 28 G - 236 A - 264 P - +51 - 1008 hits - 693 SB Training Hours: 556 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 1st overall The Helsinki Titans were a young team on the rise at the time of the S32 VHL Entry Draft and needed to pick up some valuable pieces. The Titans needed their current group to take strides to develop at an accelerated rate to become Continental Cup contenders. Mitch Higgins steps up to make his selection and determines that Jack Sound would be the best fir in Helsinki. Jack Sound, he hard-hitting, defensive defenseman who doesn't shy away from chipping in on the scoreboard is who the Titans select at #3. Jack wanted to play with his brother but that wouldn't have stopped Higgins from selecting the best player available, and as we all know, the Sound brothers never ended up on the same team during the original draft. 4. Evgeni Chekhov – G (-) " /> VHLM Stat Line: 50 W - 15 L - 2 OTL - 0.923% - 2.33 GAA - 158 GA - 2051 SA - 4063 MP – 8 SO VHL Stat Line: 125 W - 120 L - 23 OTL - 0.912% - 2.50 GAA - 650 GA - 7345 SA - 15621 MP – 32 SO Training Hours: 634 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 4th overall The Cologne Express were in need of a franchise goaltender and Evgeni Chekhov was the best available option during the S32 draft. GM, Joey Kendrick observes that and addresses the need at the most important position in the game. He selects Chekhov without hesitation with the 4th overall selection. Chekhov is without a doubt, the best goaltender from this draft class and has put up some good numbers on a team that hasn't been able to get over the hump into championship contention. An impressive 10 shutouts in S36 on a team that should be entering a rebuild should earn him consideration on the Aidan Shaw Trophy ballot. 5. Zack Sound – D/C (+1) VHLM Stat Line: 72 GP – 41 G - 101 A - 142 P - +46 - 65 hits - 99 SB VHL Stat Line: 288 GP – 101 G - 179 A - 280 P - -29 - 591 hits - 450 SB Training Hours: 569 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 6th overall Seattle was another rebuilding franchise at the time of the S32 draft and needed players at every position. They step up and select the other Sound brother with their first selection at 5th overall. Zack Sound has not had the kind of success at the VHL level that his brother Jack has, although Zack has worked just a bit harder in the training facilities. Zack is still a solid defensive defenseman with some offensive abilities as is a no-brainer for the Bears to select at #5. 6. Chico Salmon – LW (+2) VHL Stat Line: 360 GP – 142 G - 210 A - 352 P - +169 - 266 hits - 91 SB Training Hours: 524 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 8th overall Chico Salmon is the best offensive talent in this draft class aside from Anatoli Zhumbayev, but has had commitment and work ethic issues at times. The Seattle Bears find a steal by drafting him with the 6th overall pick, adding a highly skilled forward to the club, following the selection of one of the better defenseman from the draft eligible players. Salmon has all the talent in the world but his work ethic issues drop his draft stock and Seattle is very happy to select him in the second half of the 1st round. 7. Mattis Trumbauer – D (+4) VHL Stat Line: 360 GP – 71 G - 228 A - 299 P - -71 - 362 hits - 713 SB Training Hours: 361 Original Draft Position: 2nd round, 11th overall Toronto is in search of a solid defenseman after selecting a forward at 1st overall and they find Mattis Trumbauer at the 7th overall pick. Trumbauer is an offensive defenseman who throws his body around from time to time and is a shot blocking machine. He has had himself a solid VHL career thus far, and a very good pick at #7. He is sometimes underrated because of his lack of work ethic and is not all that vocal in the media. 8. Jamie Shetler – RW (-1) VHLM Stat Line: 72 GP – 38 G - 21 A - 59 P - +44 - 106 hits - 9 SB VHL Stat Line: 288 GP – 101 G - 138 A - 239 P - +98 - 127 hits - 56 SB Training Hours: 295 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 7th overall The Calgary Wranglers select forward, Jamie Shetler with the 8th overall selection. Shetler was once a promising prospect but has fallen off the map a bit due to his lack of commitment. His offensive numbers have been quite impressive for a guy with less than 300 training hours under his belt. Shetler is a bit one-dimensional though, as he has never liked the idea of hitting or shot blocking and that shows in his statistical numbers in those categories. At #8, he is a solid pick-up for the Wranglers. 9. Damien Sandow – RW/D (-4) VHLM Stat Line: 72 GP – 102 G - 51 A - 153 P - +71 - 121 hits - 8 SB VHL Stat Line: 288 GP – 63 G - 93 A - 156 P - -107 - 357 hits - 105 SB Training Hours: 276 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 5th overall Damien Sandow was one of the most promising prospects from the S32 draft class but his VHLM success did not translate into the VHL. He has been bounced around from team to team, playing for 6 teams in the past 5 seasons and has not been able to find his stride in the pros. He rarely shows up to team practices and that is a huge reason that the Bears do not select him until the 9th overall selection this time around. Sandow has made the switch to defense and it has helped rejuvenate his career, recording career highs in most statistics. 10. Cody Inko – D/RW (-) VHLM Stat Line: 141 GP – 68 G - 100 A - 168 P - +45 - 237 hits - 271 SB VHL Stat Line: 216 GP – 40 G - 116 A - 156 P - +91 - 168 hits - 327 SB Training Hours: 385 Original Draft Position: 1st round, 10th overall Jason Glasser selects two-way defenseman, turned forward with the 10th overall selection in the form of Cody Inko.Inko spent more time in the VHLM than most of his fellow draftees in this re-draft but has still etched out a solid VHL career for himself. He does not show up to practice or talk to the media as much as he should be, but he is a solid piece, wither on the back-end, or up front and a good selection for Calgary. 11. Jesper Hellkvist – RW/D (-) VHLM Stat Line: 144 GP – 55 G - 76 A - 131 P - +16 - 420 hits - 37 SB VHL Stat Line: 143 GP – 22 G - 39 A - 61 P - +4 - 379 hits - 82 SB Training Hours: 222 Original Draft Position: 2nd round, 12th overall Quebec City picks up a nice role player at the #11 slot with the selection of Jesper Hellkvist. Jesper had solid numbers in the VHLM but did not find his offensive touch in the VHL. He did however, play a solid game away from the puck, taking every opportunity to make the big hit or to block a shot from getting to his goaltender. Those are the kinds of players that never get the recognition that they deserve, but are just as important to a team as the superstar players. His career was cut short by a career-ending injury. 12. Mack Hudson – G (+3) VHLM Stat Line: 58 W - 11 L - 3 OTL - 0.913% - 2.05 GAA - 148 GA - 1710 SA - 4336 MP – 6 SO VHL Stat Line: 11 W - 23 L - 2 OTL - 0.903% - 3.33 GAA - 121 GA - 1248 SA - 2183 MP – 0 SO Training Hours: 250 Original Draft Position: 2nd round, 15th overall Mack Hudson had a bright future ahead of himself, following a outstanding season in the VHLM and looked like he would be a superstar goalie in the VHL. The Meute needed a starting goaltender so this pick makes sense for them. Hudson only ended up playing one season in the VHL and split time with another tender on a rebuilding team. His stats were not outstanding, but still good for a rookie goaltender in his position. If it were not for a career-ending injury, Hudson could have been the steal of this draft class. 13. Luke Riggs – C (+12) VHLM Stat Line: 204 GP – 40 G - 74 A - 114 P - -25 - 247 hits - 26 SB Training Hours: 82 Original Draft Position: 3rd round, 25th overall Usually, a player who has yet to suit up for a VHL game would not be included in a re-draft, but Luke Riggs is what you call a late bloomer and has recently been showing up to practice more often. Helsinki selects him with the last pick in this re-draft and could get a quality year or two from him in the VHL. He had trouble finding a VHLM contract at times but his re-commitment to the game has shown in his play. A solid depth centerman who loves to take the body is how I would describe Luke Riggs.
