That's it, no more responses will be accepted. For TPE, link to this: http://www.vhlforum.com/index.php?/topic/22271-vhl-this-week-72115-new-boss-trivia-update/
1. Which VHL All-Star Game featured the most goals scored?
Answer: S42 which had a ridiculous 35
Fairly easy one this, as long as you found the exhaustive ASG history pinned at the top of the VHL/VHLM awards forum: http://www.vhlforum.com/index.php?/topic/3308-vhl-all-star-game-rosters-and-history/
2. Who was the lowest-scoring top scorer in VHL history?
Answer: Jason White finished with 107 points in Season 29. Fun tidbit - that included a VHL record 10-point game.
Sticking to VHL/VHLM awards, you merely had to look in the Mike Szatkowski Trophy awarded to the league's top scorer. Some confused it with top goal-scorer but again quite straightforward.
3. Name a Continental Cup winning captain from BEFORE S31 who is NOT in the Hall of Fame.
Answer: Numerous. Most people went for the first eligible option - Nic Riopel of S29 Toronto.
But you could have also gone for Ginzou Fujiwara (S15), Jack O'Riley (S14), Ignatius Feltersnatch (S22), or Danny Tremblay (S4+S5), among others. The trick really was figuring out cup threads included captains and then doing a comparison to the HOF.
4. What is the only VHL individual award to never have been renamed or change its function?
Answer: Dustin Funk Trophy
I thought this was a good way to get people to read the blurbs at the top of trophy threads about who they're named after. Shame that the Brett Slobodzian Trophy was also never renamed which made this a slight test of reading the full question.
5. The defenceman with the most career goals scored has his number retired by which franchise?
Answer: Quebec City Meute, who have only retired one number - that of 300-goal man Alexander Valiq.
Apparently not everyone knows knows where to find career stats and I am looking into where they would be best placed in the Hall of Fame. If you did, simply finding the highest goal-scoring defenceman was 75% of the job: http://www.vhlforum.com/index.php?/topic/347-vhl-career-stats-updated-for-s43/
6. Name a goaltender who was named the league's best in at least one season but never inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Answer: Numerous. As were the answers, including Skylar Rift, Marek Van Urho, Jesus Christ and Martin Brookside who still has a chance.
Similar in nature to the cup-winning captain question, no tricks here, simply a case of finding the Aidan Shaw Trophy thread and going from there.
7. Which VHL or VHLM award used to be known as the Oates Trophy?
Answer: the Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy
I didn't even know the answer to this, I just knew one VHLM trophy used to be named after Adam Oates. Much like the trickier Dustin Funk Trophy question, a simple case of reading the blurbs describing the awards.
8. Two players played every game in the VHL's first NINE seasons. Did the one NOT named Sterling Labatte ever win a Continental Cup?
Answer: Yes. Markus Lidstrom won the Continental Cup in Season 1, before being drafted.
Probably the toughest of the lot. First you had to go to career stats (if you didn't know already of course) and find who played the same number of games as Sterling Labatte, a S2 draftee who had to play somewhere before the draft in the absence of the VHLM. Of numerous such players, Lidstrom was the only to stick around until the end of S9 along with the Hall of Famer. From there, you either go through each of the first nine Continental Cup threads (though if you start in S1 it's pretty quick) or use my newly advertised features - players' titles listed in their draft thread.
Anyway, that's it for the inaugural round of VHL history trivia. On Friday or Saturday the next set will begin and that should feature some of the bonus questions some of you have provided and maybe a few different features.
As for the season leaderboard, that is being tracked separately. We are currently at 24 members with 2 points and 7 with one.
