oh my god. emotions. History has been made. Bittersweet that I've barely been here for possibly THE team achievement of the modern VHL but the team deserves it. Well done to all my Helsinki brothers.

And Calgary, <3 forever but this needed to happen.

    Matsikas Reflects

    Matsikas looking into the crowd

After spending three seasons in the VHLM, Theo Matsikas made the jump to the big leagues this season, and had himself a decent outing, that ended in a bang. Theo broke into VHLM putting up big numbers in his first season with Oslo, but after that season he was traded and his numbers regressed. The following season he was traded again, only to see his numbers regress even more. After seeing his decline in play many doubted if he would ever make the VHL, but to many peoples surprised he cracked the Helsinki Titians opening night roster out of camp. In his first season of play he put up respectable numbers putting up 8 goals, 28 assists for 36 points. He lay'd out 85 hits, and lead the team in shots blocked with 113. But probably the most interesting thing to take away from his season? The Helsinki Titians winning the cup, with so many other rookies on the team, but lead by the veterans. Helsinki lead the league in goals for, goals against, shots for, and shots against, it was an impressive to say the least. Helsinki spent the last couple of seasons rebuilding, so no one expected the team to come out and win it all in their first season of competition. It shows what kind of players the Titians have on their team, and how they look to be competitive for many more seasons to come.
We were able to catch up with Matsikas to ask him some questions.
"Theo, you won it all in your first season, how does it feel?"
Its amazing, I have no idea how to describe it though. I just have to thank my team, from upper management to everyone on the roster. They picked me up when I fell, and when I was having a rough time on the ice. They made it easy on me, and I am lucky to be on this team.
"Would you classify this season as a bounce back one?"
I think so, my past couple seasons in junior I was really starting to struggle, getting moved around from team to team. I think it showed in my first couple games with the Titians, I was struggling for sure. After a couple of games I was finally able to play my game, and feel comfortable with it. Its due in large part to my teammates around me, they gave me a lot of advice, and was always there for me. This season has given me a lot of confidence, and I am sure I can continue this strong play into next season!
"Plans for the offseason, and or goals for next season?"
Ill take a little bit of time to relax, and spend time with my family back in Greece, but not to much, ill be back in the gym sooner then later. As for next season, I just want to continue my strong play, and improve my play in both ends. I had a pretty good offensive season, but I do think I can improve defensively a lot more. At the same time, I do not want to sacrifice my offence for defence to much. Ill come up with a plan with my coaches and we will go from there.

Well there it is, Theo seems to have a lot of confidence heading into the offseason, and rightfully he should. Only time will tell to see if he uses it, heading it next season.
