The Halifax 21st are on quite the run as of late… but not the run you might expect. In the middle of a full-on losing streak, the team has struggled to find a way to turn things around. With some new players coming into the fold, it seems that the team has struggled to find some chemistry and are scrambling to try and get things back on track. But it appears as though some players aren’t keeping quiet during this losing streak, airing their frustrations publicly. One of those players is newcomer to the team, Cash Wheeler.
Cash Wheeler, the young 18 year old Canadian, was quite blunt during a team press conference earlier in the week about wanting to be the best player on the team, and within the entire VHL down the line, but his stats so far have been less-than-stellar, and some have begun to say that he might be in his own head, and not able to live up to his self-proclaimed hype. Wheeler has been deemed as arrogant by some insiders on the team, and not very approachable. He walks around with a swagger, but one that he has not quite earned.
So let’s take a look at Wheeler’s play throughout his first games with Halifax. Upon receiving a contract offer, Wheeler was promised Top-6 minutes. A natural RW, he felt as though he’d be a great fit on the team and able to contribute. But here we are, 6 games in to Wheeler’s VHLM career and he’s put up solely 1 Assist, and is a -6. Not quite the start he expected, right? When we reached out to Wheeler for a comment, here’s what he had to say:
“Here we go… The criticism starts already, eh? That didn’t take long… Look, what do you expect? I get my contract offer; they’re offering me top-6 minutes. And what? I’m averaging 10-12 minutes a game. I get it, I’m the new kid on the block. I gotta’ earn my stripes, and all that jazz… but **** just give me some ice time, and I guarantee I’ll be burying pucks in the net. I hate losing. Cash Wheeler is not a loser. I’m a born winner. I want to get this team back on track as much as all the other guys in that locker room. The bounces aren’t going our way. I’m not the coach here; I don’t make the lineup decisions. All I’m saying is that I hope going forward I get the chance to really show what I’m capable of out there. The losing streak stops, and it stops now.”
Visibly upset… Visibly agitated. I think that’s the mindset of many of the players on the Halifax 21st at this point, and all are wanting to right the ship and put an end to this losing streak. But the longer this goes on, the more frustrated they will become. Are they able to get out of their own heads, and start delivering? Only time will tell, but the next few games here are going to be key on how the remainder of their season is going to go. As for Cash Wheeler, can he start backing up all his hype with his play on the ice? We’ll soon find out…
