You know, I used to love the Crosby-Ovechkin debates because they were the two best players in the league for a while and it would constantly change between who was the better player. I just don't get these Crosby-Toews arguments though because everyone seems to think that Toews' defensive play outweighs Crosby's offensive play, when that's not true at all. I mean Toews isn't even the best two-way forward according to the NHL Writers. While Crosby was clearly the best offensive player and the MVP of the league. And the leadership stuff is bs. You guys have no idea of who's the better leader in the locker room, plus, Crosby's been the captain of the Penguins since he was 19, so there's obviously some good leadership with him (same with Toews, they're both great young leaders, it's just that you have no idea who the significantly better leader is in the room). The cups argument is pointless when you look at the Penguins bottom six and as-core compared to Chicago's these past few years. And Crosby has a cup! Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Crosby-Toews argument is just an excuse for the Crosby haters to hate on him some more and downgrade his success. Like I don't even see Toews as the second best player, when you got guys like Malkin and Stamkos.

Petrov On The VHLM Draft With his name yet to be called, going into the 5th round Aleksander Petrov waits patiently hoping one team will take a chance on him. Two teams have already passed on their pick, Petrov has little to no value to any of these teams, but this doesn't upset him, it motivates him. Finally with the 43rd pick, the Oslo Strom selects the right wing out of Bulgaria. Here’s what Petrov had to say about the draft. “Whatever, I’m not here to focus on the teams that passed on me; I’m just honoured to get selected by the Oslo Storm. I’ll will prove to all other 9 teams that they made a mistake. But yeah, the Strom are going go far this year, I can guarantee that. I’m just going work hard with everybody else and grow as a team. The VHLM is more development than anything else, so I’m not going focus on my draft position too much.”

Petrov Waits The man, the myth, the legend, Aleksander Petrov, is ready to make a big splash in the VHL, and before he does so, he’ll have to spend some time in the VHLM. As the VHLM Draft is approaching everyone wants to know where “The Bulgarian Magician” is going. But, as we find out in this quote by Petrov, he doesn’t even care where he goes. “I’m really excited for the draft, but I know that this is only the VHLM Draft and I shouldn’t get overly excited because it’s not the VHL Draft yet, but I’m still really excited. I don’t really care where I go either, as long as the team I go to have a committed GM who can help me get through juniors.” Will the speedy winger out of Bulgaria be a first round pick? Or will he be picked up by a team in the second round? Questions that will be answered on the upcoming draft night.

The Rookie Profile - Sasha Petrov Name: Aleksander Petrov Height: 6’2” Weight: 180 Postion: Right Wing Last Year’s Team: Belye Medvedi (MHL) Playing Style: Playmaker Intro Every year in the VHLM Draft there are mysterious prospects that are mainly unknown in the public eye. This year, one of those prospects is Bulgarian, Aleksander “Sasha” Petrov. Petrov has had quite the journey to get to where he is today. The young playmaker has played minor hockey in Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. Although he’s moved around a lot, that hasn’t stopped him from excelling at all levels. Petrov may not be as VHL-ready as some of the prospects in this draft such as O'Malley, Richardson, or Cote, but, he’s definitely got potential to be something special. Pros Playmaking - One of the biggest assets of Sasha’s game is his playmaking abilities. One thing he can do that many others can’t, is that he can make plays happen out of nothing. He has unbelievable vision and sees plays that most other others players can’t. Lastly, Petrov is one of the most creative players in this draft, and he’s not afraid to try new things on the ice and will take risks. Skating - One nickname Petrov received when he was in the MHL, was “The Flash”, and deservingly so. Sasha has exceptional speed coming down the wing and uses his speed to get around defenders. Petrov is an explosive skater with an excellent first step, and gets into top gear very quickly. Although he’s extremely explosive, he’s also very agile and has excellent lateral movement. Puck Handling - Like said earlier, Petrov is extremely creative with the puck, and he has the puck handling abilities to do so. Another nickname that fits his playing style well, that he received is “The Bulgarian Magician”. His puck handling abilities have been compared to players such as Patrick Kane and Pavel Datsyuk. Obviously high praise, but Petrov has superb abilities at controlling the play, and making the defenders make the first move, being patience, and skillful with the puck. The Bulgarian Magician loves to have the puck on his stick. Cons Physicality - At 6’2” feet tall, and weighing in at 180 pounds, Petrov isn’t necessary small, but he does sometimes play like it. He has a tendency to shy away from using his body in times when it could be needed. He often gets intimidated by bigger opponents, and lacks the physical aspect of the game. Most of the time, after he takes a big hit, it usually takes him a while before he can play confident again. Defense - Like many other young offensive wingers, defense is not Petrov’s specialty. Although, he does back check with effort and will get down the ice quick to do so, he tends to be caught drifting a lot. One disadvantage of Petrov’s defensive game is that he is not good at getting in position, and gets caught not guarding the defender at the point. Since Sasha Petrov always wants to get involved in the play he often leaves the defenders he supposed cover, open. Shot - Although, Sasha Petrov is an offensive force, his shot could definitely use work. Last year in the MHL, Petrov managed to score 20 goals, which is very good, but, the majority of those goals came from around crease and as far as pure goal scoring goes, Petrov certainly needs work. His shooting percentage was 7.89%, but whenever Petrov seemed to have a good opportunity to score from long-range he usually missed. Conclusion All in all, Sasha Petrov seems like he could be a very good player in the VHL for a long time. However, there are many aspects of his game that he has to work on, before he can excel at the next level. It will be very interesting to see where he ends up getting drafted in the VHLM Draft, some say he could surprise many by going pretty high, while others think he’s too much of a project to be taken early.

ProspecTalk: Sasha Petrov Hello, and welcome back to another edition ProspecTalk on VHLM.com where we interview your favourite prospects for this year’s upcoming VHLM draft. Today’s prospect is none other than Bulgaria’s very own, Sasha Petrov. This young playmaker is relativity unknown in North American, but in his native land of Bulgaria, they’re calling him the Bulgarian Gretzky. Obliviously, this is high praise for Sasha, especially since he’s never even stepped on North American ice, or doesn’t speak any English. Since he doesn’t speak any English Today on ProspecTalk we brought along a Bulgarian translator. How’s it going Sasha? Very good, very good. Why did you decide to bring your talents to VHL instead of the KHL? I’ve always watched the VHL as a kid, and I loved watching all the European teams on my TV. I’ve always aspired to be playing in the best league in the world with the best players in the world. Who was your favourite team growing up? I liked all the teams, especially the European ones, so I didn’t really have one team in particular that I cheered for. Although, I did have a Riga Reign jersey, if that counts. Who do you model your game after? I wouldn’t say I model my game after anyone, really. I am my own player and I play my own style of play that I’ve been playing with ever since I was a little boy. What is your style of play, then? I like to have the puck on my stick a lot and carry the puck until I find a good pass. I definitely use my skating to my advantage; I can get around defenders with my speed. I like to keep my game at a high pace while at the same time, making sure I always have good control with the puck. What do you think of people calling you the Bulgarian Gretzky? Haha, that’s very funny, I don’t think I’m at that level yet, but maybe one day I’ll be that good, it’s going take a lot of hard work, though. What are you going do to stay motivated to reach your full potential? That’s a really good question, my motivation is just looking at the possible outcomes that would come from me being successful. The awards, the championships, the magazine covers, are things I dream about, and I know if I can work hard enough, that can actually happen. Last question, where so you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully I have been drafted to the VHL already, be on a team that gives me good playing time, and hopefully in 5 years, people will say I’m one of the best, but I still have a long way to go. Thanks for your time Sasha. My pleasure. Tune in next time for PropecTalk as we interview another one of your favourite prospects!

Sasha Petrov Enters the Draft Big news coming from the VHL, as Bulgarian-born superstar Sasha Petrov has declared for the Season 40 VHL draft. Petrov enjoyed time playing for Belye Medvedi in the MHL in Russia. The 18-year old racked up 77 points in 46 games with the Belye Medvedi, which was good enough for 3rd in the league. Even more impressive was that he came first in the league in assists with 57. He was also called up for 10 games to play with Chelyabinsk of the KHL where he had 6 assists in 10 games. The young winger is known for his creativity with the puck and his quick feet. Sasha Petrov has extraordinary vision coming down the wing and makes the people around him better. Some say he has potential to have a long and successful career in the VHL but we’ll have to find out. It will be very interesting to see if Petrov will be able to succeed in the VHL like he has in the MHL.
