S88 Team Awards Another rough season in Toronto was expected but was widely seen as another stepping stone in the rebuild. They did slight improve on their goals for and against and while it didn’t translate into more wins the team was definitely more competitive than last season. The young core is taking strides in the right direction and the consensus is a playoff berth won’t be far off. Here are some of the individual highlights: - Jimi Jaks @kelvi was nominated for the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as Top Rookie (2nd in rookie scoring) - Kyle Peace @Peace finishes his career with 255 goals, 5th place on Toronto’s all-time goal scorers list Statistical Leaders: Goals: Mac Atlas 32 Assists: Quinn Clark 36 Points: Mac Atlas 59 +/-: Branden Skuin 6 PIM: Cadmael Ixazaluoh 163 Hits: Cadmael Ixazaluoh 205 Shots: Mac Atlas 363 Shots Blocked: Quinn Clark 160 PPG: Dens Oden, CDS Leb 9 GWG: Mac Atlas, Jimi Jaks 4 Fights: Cadmael Ixazaluoh 6 Wins: Joel Castle 18 GAA: Joel Castle 2.93 SV%: Joel Castle 0.922 SO: Joel Castle 2 Here are the S88 Team Awards as voted by the Toronto players and management: Best Defenseman Quinn Clark @axtron An almost unanimous decision for this award, Quinn Clark improved on his solid rookie campaign by leading Toronto with career-highs of 36 assists and 160 blocked shots. Rookie of the Year Jimi Jaks @kelvi As mentioned above, Jaks was one of the best rookie in the league in S88 and was a nominee for the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy as Top Rookie. He finished second among league rookies for goals (18) and points (43) and led all rookies in GWG with four which also tied him for the team lead. His 43 points were fourth on the Legion and he also led the team with three shootout goals. Unsung Hero Dens Oden @Snussu Oden was a jack-of-all-trades for the Legion especially by being a staple on special teams. He led the team in power play points (21), was second in goals (27), points (55), and shots (340) and third in hits (118). Most Energetic Joel Castle @animal74, Alex Bridges III @Oatex Both Castle and Bridges III were known for their energy on the ice and in the locker room. While that may not have translated on the score sheet how they would have hope, their tireless work ethic and enthusiasm inspired their teammates. Bridges III was third in hits (135) on the Legion while ranking second in ice time among forwards. Castle faced the second-most shots in the league and still posted a solid 0.922 save percentage. Most Gentlemanly Alex Bridges III @Oatex Always an encourager in the locker room and a relative gentleman on the ice with only 42 penalty minutes, the kindness and sportsmanship displayed by Bridges III was felt by teammates and opponents alike. Most Valuable Player Mac Atlas @v.2 An easy choice for MVP, Atlas improved in his second season to lead the Legion in goals (32), points (59), shots (363), power play assists (14) and tied for the lead in GWG (4). He was the straw that stirred Toronto’s offense especially after Kyle Peace’s departure. Legionary of the Year Joel Castle @animal74 Most teams have a “glue guy” and Castle was that for the Legion. His presence was constantly felt in the locker room and as the backbone between the pipes. From his excellent play to his team-building antics, he cemented himself as someone teammates could trust. 3-Stars Award Joel Castle @animal74 Castle kept the Legion in games most nights. He faced the second-most shot in the league – over 37 shots a game – and stopped a high percentage of them. It didn’t translate into many wins but his puck-stopping display won him many Stars of the Game. Full 3-Star standings below: Player 1st 2nd 3rd Star Points Total Stars Joel Castle 9 7 6 470 22 Mac Atlas 3 4 4 210 11 Dens Oden 3 3 3 180 9 CDS Leb 4 0 0 120 4 Jimi Jaks 1 3 2 110 6 Quinn Clark 2 1 1 90 4 Harry Hagel 0 2 3 70 5 Tater Tottingham 1 1 2 70 4 Alex Bridges III 1 2 0 70 3 Cadmael Ixazaluoh 0 0 2 20 2 Maximus Decimus Meridius 0 1 0 20 1 DJ Fire Dragon 0 0 0 0 0 Branden Skuin 0 0 0 0 0 Congratulations to all the award winners and good luck in S89!

Toronto Legion Press Conference (2 TPE for answering all six questions) 1. Congrats to our own Jimi Jaks @kelvi for being nominated for Top Rookie in S88. Which Legion player(s) do think will be nominated for an award in S89? 2. Have you ever won a VHL/E/M award? Which one and how did you feel? 3. We have three new veteran players (MacElroy @Xflexz, Bridgers @PhoebeIsQueen, Warrior @KnightRiley) joining us for S89. How would you describe the Legion to them? 4. Kyle Peace @Peace has retired. What are your words of farewell to him? 5. What should the Legion give Peace as a retirement gift? 6. Our lone rookie on the starting roster this year is Bobby Bob @Baby Boomer. What is your advise to him?

Congratulations to the Rome Gladiators who came back from a disastrous S87, which saw them dead-last in the league, to finish fourth in the league with 82 points, come back from losing the first play-in game to advancing to a league record 5th Renaissance Cup Final! And, of course, the biggest congratulations to the S88 Renaissance Cup winners, the Oslo Storm ! This team entered the playoffs with the third-best record in the regular season and by making the Final for the fourth consecutive season in a row, broke a tie with Rome, who they beat in the Final this year, to set a league record for consecutive Cup Finals appearances. They also extended their league record as the only VHLE team to have won more than one Cup as they now have three. They made a blockbuster trade to acquire key contributors Alexander Stroheim (led the team in playoff scoring) @Stroheim, Nagy AL (led team defense in playoff scoring) @bigAL, and Wiley Blanchette (played every minute in net during the playoffs) @Wiley. The Cup-winning goal was scored at 16:42 in the third period by 30-goal scorer, Swinsola @Swinsola, who, up until the final game, had only registered one goal and one assist in the playoffs. What a way to end your season! Also, a quick congratulations to Oslo players Jordan Bennett @Plate, Nagy AL @bigAL, and Adeline Delle Donne @Dtayl for becoming the 10th, 11th, and 12th players in VHLE history to win multiple Renaissance Cups. Please take a moment to refill your refreshments as the Awards Ceremony will begin shortly.

First off, congratulations to the top team in the S88 regular season, the Geneva Rush ! They led the league with a 45-18-9 campaign for 99 points. They also led the league by the slimmest of margins in Goals For (236) and Goals Against (188). Now, let me get to some playoff acknowledgements:

Toronto Legion Press Conference (2 TPE for answering all six questions) 1. If you were a gambling person, would you put money on Toronto making the playoffs this season? 2. If you could play with any player in VHL history who would you choose and why? 3. What's the wildfire situation in your area? Is it affecting your dry land training? 4. What is the best thing you have planned for this summer? 5. Would you rather for a day: sit in a boat on a beautiful lake and fish or float around in a big pool? 6. Golden Knights or Panthers. Who is winning the Stanley Cup?
-
Toronto Legion Press Conference (2 TPE for answering all six questions) 1. What expectations do you have for the Legion next season? 2. Based on those expectations, how aggressive do you think management be on the trade/free agent front? What do we need most? 3. If you could only do one dry land exercise for the whole off-season what would it be? 4. What area do you hope to improve most in this off-season? 5. You're settling on your deck to relax and catch some rays. What are you drinking? 6. What snack or beverage are you bringing to the team BBQ to share?

Earlier this week, the Toronto Legion held a press conference to officially announce that goaltender Joel Castle has resigned with the team for four more years (last year player option). The Canadian netminder has been the Legion’s starter the last two seasons after being selected 13th overall in the S86 Draft. Although on paper Toronto barely improved last season, Castle’s numbers did get better as his SV% improved from 0.915 to 0.922 and his GAA decreased (3.09 to 2.93), albeit that did not translate into more wins. When asked why he stayed with the Legion instead of testing the free agent market: “We’re a work in progress, for sure.” said Castle with Toronto GM Nils Godlander @Moon at his side. “We know we have a ways to go but we are working hard and we feel that our core players are on a similar trajectory and the wins will come. We are growing together, learning together, fighting together and going through the experiences necessary to get us to the next level. I really enjoy the group we have here and we believe in each other. I believe we can bring a Continental Cup back to Toronto in the future and I want to be the one stopping the pucks to get there.”
