  4. A Day in the Life of Block Buster The standard day for Block Buster starts at 4am, every morning he wakes up, stumbles in the dark to find his pads, and heads out to the ice with his trainer to work on his skills. He doesn’t only work on his skills as a goalie but will have a good old crack at improving his shooting and skating. He does this as he feels he learns just as much from looking at the net as apposed to being in between the pipes. This lasts through until 5:30 where he goes back home to have his standard breakfast of 4 Weetbix, 2 slices of Vegemite toast and his chocolate up&go. After this, Block will usually meet up with the team for the morning skate, he watches the team and tries to gather tricks and tips of skating and stopping on the ice. Block Buster takes this training extremely serious and can sometimes get frustrated, annoyed and gets angry if too many goals get past him. Blocks’ temper and disappointment within himself can often lead to him walking off for a 2 minute debrief with the coach, he wants to be the best and letting in any goals is a big let down to him, which he takes personally. Practice with the team can often go until lunch time with no snack stops. Block is always hungry and is named the teams blue whale due to him constantly eaten something. Blocks day often revolves around food and snack stops with him often housing a pack of Tim-Tams on his net alongside his water bottle at training. For lunch Block Buster has a 4 egg omelette with chicken breast and mixed vegetables. His interest in food as well as his extremely good habits in terms of commitment to training and bettering himself as an overall player have kept him in tip top shape his whole life, he doesn’t plan on changing what works just improving it. Block doesn’t respond well to change. The lead up to any game he will always perform the same routine, down to the same pair of undies. His superstition of lucky undies can be detrimental if he forgets to do the washing. Block also feels he needs to be the first player into the locker room, where he can prepare and get his head clear and focused on the game, picture the goals and imagine a shutout for that game. He continues to make sure that all his equipment is laid out before going for a nervous pre game wee. After the game determines how he continues the rituals. A win will see Block head to McDonalds for his celebratory 24 pack of nuggets to eat while watching Netflix. A loss sees a very different side. He will get the footage from the game and re-watch all shots made against him alongside the coach. He feels this will allow him to improve for next game and understand what to do better. He always thinks he is the star of the show, a win means he did good, a loss is on his shoulders and he let the team down. After the Netflix episode or debrief Block heads to bed where he will do it all again tomorrow. (540 words)

  8. Hi this is Nat Flix on today's instalment on What's new we have Mississauga's new Goalie Block Buster. NF: Hi Block, how are you today? BB: It's extremely cold here today but otherwise I am good. NF: I imagine it is a big change from warm Sydney. How do you think you played in your opening matches? BB: Oh look Sydney is much warmer than here. Look I went out hard and played my strongest game. It is nice to start to gel with the Hounds I imagine with time we will improve. NF: Yeah that third game seemed to be a lot closer than the other two, it must of been nice getting a .900 save percentage in your opening week? BB: It came as a bit of a shock as the calibre of players here is a bit higher than in Australia. But I know I am as good as anyone else in this league and I will show that. NF: A bit of fire in your belly I like to see that and I am sure the GM's around the league would like that too. So what do you think of the management and team at Mississauga? BB: Look everyone is nice and trying to help me out, but I know what I have got to do on the ice to show my worth. NF: You came up against Minnesota in the first game, who are expected to be one of the contenders this season and also have fellow Aussie Berocka Sundqvist what do you think of him? BB: I think for the first overall pick he is very overrated. He took 10 shots on me and not a single one got through. I wish him luck for the next time we play because we all know he will need it. NF: Well I could see this rivalry getting interesting. Thank you for your time and have a nice day.

  10. Block Buster is a 23 year old rookie new to the VHLM from west Sydney – Australia. His strength and determination allowed him to be signed into the Mississauga Hounds where he hopes to continue to show his dominance on the ice. Strengths 1. Aggression and Determination Block is not scared of putting his body on the line for his team. He shows aggression towards the puck when blocking a shot and this allows him to put force behind his defensive movements. He shows great strength and likes to prove people wrong, Block is determined not to let the puck inside his net, this determination will show useful when against some of the top teams in the league. 2. Hand speed and reaction time In the past Block Buster has shown great hand speed and reaction time in crucial moments in a game. Block was his home towns soccer goalie – given the bigger net and more room for mistakes his speed and reaction time improved. For fun Block likes to get his childhood friend to practice with him by hitting squash balls at him while he tries to defend the net. 3. Leadership Even within the goals Block has the ability to show leadership with guidance for players. Assisting in plays where he sees fit and directing players around the ice given his vantage point at times. Block excelled at hockey growing up, often the best in his side – other players would look up at him because of this and Block was expected to guide and show others how to play. Weaknesses 1. Slender build Often hockey players weigh a lot more than Block. His slender build leaves a lot more room open in the net. This could prove detrimental to his team particularly if the are shoots taken from the side. Block tried to counter this with his hand speed and aggression but this alone, may not be enough. 2. Cocky Block started off a good player and continued to be one of the best through his career, he often takes control of the puck and leaves his team wondering why he is outside of his net. Cockiness can lead to frustration within the team, disastrous plays and often a goal scored against them. Block can be seen often trying to pass the puck instead of freezing it – he thinks he can get it through the other team to his players. This leads to turnovers and potential goals scored against him. 3. Sloppy Skater As mentioned Block was one of the best within his competition and during is career as a goalie. His skating on the ice, behind the net and quickly back to the bench can be sloppy, out of control and over balanced. When the puck goes behind the net Block will try to get around to stop it however is not quik, smooth or agile enough to get back around the front if the other side quickly intercept the puck. This aligns with his cockiness can sometimes leaves him miss-positioned and easy goals scored against him. In conclusion after speaking with Block he will try his best and continue to improve in all aspect of the game both on and off the ice.
