As we near the end of the season fans of teams in the lower parts of the standings begin to look forward towards next year’s draft and their team’s future. For Ottawa however, they are looking at the playoffs this year leading the Eastern Conference, and already have clinched their spot in the playoffs. Ottawa is in a prime position to contend for the Founder's Cup with their biggest challengers being Yukon and Minnesota. However, this is not about how Ottawa is playing this year it is about Ottawa in the future. So let's break down how Ottawa may perform next season.

    Current Players

They will hold onto 8 players who will likely play at the start of next season however it is likely that many of those players will move onto the VHLE depending on how fast they gain TPE. The majority of these players are forwards with a defenseman and no goaltender. This lack of defenseman and goaltender will mean that most of their draft picks will likely be put into those positions. They have 5 players who will likely immediately move onto the VHLE next season and the rest of their players will be in the next VHLM draft. These players leave Ottawa in a great situation to build an even stronger team around their core that is already one of the best-returning cores in the league. This returning core will be incredibly import to how the Lynx play next season and could very well lead them to a back-to-back assuming they win the Founder’s Cup this year.

    S81 VHLM Draft

Where Ottawa shines this upcoming season is how many draft picks they possess. They are in control of their own 1st round pick which will likely be one of the last picks in that round. Ottawa also possesses Philadelphia and Mexico City's first-round picks which will likely be in the middle of the draft meaning they could pick up goaltender Juha Jarvinen or defenseman Ragnar Hagsatrom which could become important members of their core throughout next years season. Ottawa also has three draft picks in the second round with their own, San Diego, and Mexico City's picks. San Diego is likely being the highest pick of these three picks and the 2nd round is where defenseman and goaltenders become much more common so it is entirely possible we see Ottawa wait until this round to pick up their goaltender and defenseman. Ottawa however does not have any other draft picks until the 5th round where they only hold their own picks until the end of the season.

    Conclusion

The Lynx are in a great position to not only win the Founder’s Cup this season, but are in a position to continue being a contender going into next season. Their future next season isn’t even heavily reliant on draft luck because of how stacked their returning roster is already and could be a contender if only one of their draft picks blossoms into a strong player. The future for the Ottawa Lynx is as bright as their goal light when they hit the ice.

I absolutely love how you got the reader excited for Ariane's start, but then showed that she really did not perform as well as you hoped in her first two games. It is also nice to have small interview quotes to see inside of the mind of her as she struggles to adjust to the VHLM. Might be helpful if you made sure the colors you used worked well in both themes because while it wasn't distracting I can see some people struggling to read the purple on dark mode. 9/10

    Player Overview

Yun Chiang is a 17 year old out of China currently playing for the Miami Marauders of the VHLM. Chiang plays on the right-wing as a 2-way forward playing very well on the offensive side of the puck currently having 47 goals and 57 assists being the strongest forward on the Marauders. He quickly adapted playing in the VHLM after moving to the US early in the season. During his first 6 games, Chiang struggled quite a lot for only putting one assist and no goals. After he scored his first goal, he has become an important member of his team. While Chiang is still new to the league, he has slowly moved his way up to a borderline 1st round pick as he has become a strong presence on the ice in the VHLM.

    Offense

Chiang prospers while he controls the puck with his strong skating, but also makes room for his teammates with his 57 assists. Chiang plays a very important role on his teams PP where he has 9 PPG and leads the teams with that stat. His offense has fired up largely over the last 20 games where he has had three hat tricks and a “haul-trick” scoring 6 goals in a single game where he also fed his teammate with one assist. Chiang has largely proven himself as a very good offensive player throughout this season, but being a strong offensive player does not mean he can produce this well in the VHL or even the VHLE, but it is a good start to a productive career.

    Defense

He also is not a problem on the defensive side of the puck having a +11 +/-. This statistic is more impressive considering the Marauders have played the majority of their season with no or only one defensemen leaving the forwards out to dry and having to play well on the defensive side of the puck. Chiang also plays on the penalty kill where the Marauders are fairly successful. Chiang has also proved to be a fairly disciplined player, only amassing 24 PIM throughout the current season. Chiang also struggled on the defensive side of the puck for the first part of the season where he had his lowest +/- of the season at -11 which is a huge difference to the player we currently see on the ice. Chiang currently is a player that while strong a offense can easily cause turnovers and help his teammates on defense allowing him to produce on the offensive side of the puck.

As the VHLM enters the last period of the season we look to who has the opportunity to grab a spot in the playoffs. THere are already a few teams that look like they already have their playoff spot secured, but today we are going to look at the teams who have a more difficult path to the postseason. The teams will be ranked in their current standings along with a grade of their playoff possibilities.

    1. Las Vegas Aces A

The Las Vegas Aces currently stand in 5th place in the league overall with 8 games against teams that have little chance against making the playoffs. Assuming the Aces take home all of these games they will have a good plate to get in however they will also have to find wins against Houston, Miami, or Halifax. Those three teams are currently in the race with Houston likely already securing a spot, however they only play Miami twice, Houston twice, and Halifax once. These games will be essential to winning because winning those also places another team in a harder position to get into the playoffs. Las Vegas also has to play the extremely tough opponents of Yukon and Ottawa five times which could prove to be a hard task with how strong those two teams look this season.

    2. Halifax 21st B-

Halifax currently sits in 6th overall in the standings. Halifax however will only play the bottom three teams in the league 3 times. This means they have an extremely hard schedule throughout the rest of the season and will have to turn up the heat if they wish to make the playoffs. They cannot rely heavily on their point lead as they only have a 6 point lead and will play Yukon and Ottawa 4 times throughout the remainder of the season meaning the majority of their season will be played against teams at their level in the standings.

    3. Philadelphia Reapers B

Philly is currently in 7th place in the league and will play the bottom three teams in the league 6 times, but will have to play the top two teams a total of five times. This leaves Philadelphia with an even amount of hard and easy games which means that they will also have to play teams very close to them in the standings. They also noticeably have Minnesota missing in their schedule meaning that they have one less team above them in the standings to play. This could be a blessing or a curse, but only time can tell that.

    4. Mexico City Kings C

Mexico City is currently in 8th place in the league which currently places them in the lowest seed of the playoffs. The Kings drew the short straw in this last part of the season playing the bottom three in the standings 4 times, but playing the top two 6 times meaning they only have 8 games against teams not at the top or bottom of the league. This gives Mexico City the hardest Schedule of the teams in the hunt for the playoffs. This schedule could be the downfall of Mexico City and could leave them sitting out when the playoffs start.

    5. Miami Marauders C+

Miami currently is in 9th place in the standings meaning if the season ended today they would not be playing another game. Miami has an interesting schedule to close out the season because they only play the bottom two teams twice and top two once meaning they will be playing the majority of their final part of the season against teams in the playoff race. This means anytime they win they put their opponent in a much harder position to make the playoffs, however everytime they lose they will be in a harder position to win. It is important to note that Miami has made a complete turnaround from the start of their season where they started 1-11 and currently sit 25-28 meaning they have come hot throughout the middle part of the season. Miami has a hard schedule, but they may just be the team to watch as the season nears its end.

I absolutely love reading all these plans for the future of players. Honestly let's be honest who hasn't dreamed of having a popular talk show about whatever it is they truly love.  I also like hearing about what you think you should do in the future as a player/GM/AGM in the VHL fully expect whatever you do to do great! As a little tip for making it a little easier to read maybe separate the areas into more defined sections so readers can read it more easily(maybe bold areas or something similar). 9/10

After signing with the Miami Marauders just 3 weeks ago, Yun Chiang has become a fiery player and recently scored 6 goals in one game. Chiang started his first 6 games without any goals and only 4 assists. After his first goal Chiang quickly heated up starting a 14 game point streak. During that streak he became a solid 1st line RW. Chiang also struggled at first on the defensive side of the puck with a low +/- of -9 which may have been a leading factor in how Miami struggled largely in the first quarter of the season. He completely changed his defensive play and currently has a +/- of +11 and is his line allowed no goals in the recent 6-1 loss to Minnesota. Chiang currently has 35 goals and 47 assists placing 15th in league overall point collecting and 15th in overall goal collecting. If Chiang continues his production and Miami's secondary unit can continue to collect the occasional goal, Miami could find themselves in the playoffs.

After Yun Chiang’s massive 6 goal 7 point game, we were able to catch with him and ask him a few questions.

Great game Chiang, how do you feel about your performance this year?

I feel great! I am happy to play here in Miami and I believe that we can find ourselves in the playoffs if we keep playing as we are playing.

Have you enjoyed your time in Miami?

Yea I have the speed in the US is completely different than in China. I love the feel in the locker room and the feeling of proving people wrong both as a Chinese player and as a team that should not be competing for a playoff spot.

As your career marches forward what do you believe you could be doing after your professional hockey career is over?

I don’t really know, I guess it depends when my career is over. I would love to play this game for as long as I possibly can, but we will see what happens as time moves. My dream as a kid was to coach the Chinese National Hockey team, so I guess either coaching a Chinese National Hockey team or even managing the Asian team in the World Championship.

What makes you want to coach the Chinese National Hockey Team?

I want to grow the sport in my home country. China has plenty of kids that could become stars in the VHL, but they just don’t have the coaching available to them. I believe the first step to expanding hockey in China is for a player who played in the VHL to come back to China and coach those kids to their full potential. I also would love to see a VHL, VHLE, or even VHLM team in China to bring more fans to the sport.

Are there any other possible jobs you would wish to do?

Not really, I really want to return back home and improve hockey in China. I hope one day that I will be able to help do that whether that be as a coach to a national team, a coach of a youth team, or even an equipment manager for a professional team in China.

Do you have any extra comments?

I actually do, after this current season I will be going back to China and will be hosting a youth training camp for Chinese citizens under 16. The training camp will be occurring the same days as all of the VHL drafts, so these kids will get to see a player to hopefully get drafted into the highest level of hockey. I hope that this will become a yearly activity as I grow older and I hope it will be a stepping stone into my dream job as coach of the Chinese National Hockey Team.

Thank you for your time Chiang.

    Thank you for having me!

Yun Chiang has performed very well over the last few games, slowly moving up to 14th in goals on the season after joining the Miami Marauders part way through the season.

The Miami Marauders who are undoubtedly rebuilding currently, but they have signed many names throughout the season to but them on the cusp of securing a playoff spot. Of the players who played in Miami's opening game only one of those players is still playing. Unsurprisingly Miami started off the season very poorly going 2-8 in their firth 10 games. Currently Miami holds a 8-15 record meaning in their last 13 games they have gone 6-7. This massive difference comes in the players they have been playing in their last few games. Currently Miami is playing 7 players including 5 forwards 1 defensemen and a goalie. Goaltender Juha Jarvinen has played 6 games with two strong games only allowing two goals. Miami still struggles on the defensive side of the puck with only D man Xiaoping Benguin Dinghao Sonei playing the blue line. Of course this struggle defensively has led to an increased amount of shots going towards the net so it is possible as the defense improves Juha Jarvinen's stats will improve. Offensively Yun Chiang has looked incredibly strong with a great 5 game point streak. It is possible as the season continues we may see Miami sneak into the 8th/7th spot and secure themselves a spot in the playoffs where anything can happen.

Yun Chiang: A Player from an Unlikely Location

Yun Chiang was born in Chaohu, China to his parents Feng Chiang and Li Chiang. His parents had enough money that they were able to travel the world, and his father’s favorite location to visit was Vancouver, Canada. This love for Vancouver led to his family visiting Canada often enough that Yun would begin to love watching hockey. One year he asked his parents to buy him hockey gear so he could play hockey. Yun Chiang put on skates for the first time when he was 7. His mother tells the story of how he couldn’t even get up for the first two days, but as time went on his skating got better and in just a week he was waddling around the ice with a stick in his hands. Chiang brought his new skates and all his gear his father bought him during that trip and he would take them to his local ice rink.

In Chauhu, the ice rink was nearly entirely for speed skating and figure skating, but after getting a group of 20 kids together Yun was able to convince the owners of the facility to allow hockey on the ice for 4 hours every week. Yun would never miss single minute that he was able to play hockey on that ice and the more he played the better he got. When Yun was 12, a Chinese youth hockey team invited him to play as they visited Mongolia for a regional tournament. In his first competitive game, Yun scored 3 goals and 2 assists proving that he may just have what it takes to play professional hockey.

After hearing of Yun’s success in Mongolia, his parents decided that he should spend a season in Sweden in order to play at a higher level just to see how well he could perform. Chiang spend his 15th birthday in Sweden playing in a youth league, but he was able to win the award for most goals in the season with 41 in 80 games. Yun Chiang may just be a professional hockey player.

Soon after coming back to China, Chiang played for the Chinese Men’s Youth Hockey team and traveled the world playing national teams. The Chinese team was historically terrible, but Chiang was a diamond in the rough throughout his tenure with the team. In an effort to increase Chinese hockey, the Chinese government gave permission to the best 3 players in the CMYHT to play in the VHL and the VHL affiliate leagues. Chiang waited a short time before he would get on that plane and move to the US and sign with the Miami Marauders.
