Absolute scenes, happy birthday VHL
-
I completely forgot I hadn't done a PT this week until a few hours before the deadline and I've not been paying attention to the sim at all since New York got eliminated from the playoffs, so I'm going to have to throw one out there desperately. It's also coming off the back of England losing in the final of the Euro's so I'm obviously not in the best of moods. A relatively interesting development in the "Broken Everything" storyline is that Wayne Gretzky has now overtaken another player from the Season 92 Draft Class in TPE. Gretzky entered the VHL Draft 325 TPE behind Dom's player Vlad Von Carstein but, admittedly mainly thanks to Dom not updating for a month, Gretzky (who is now on 630 TPE) is now 40 TPE ahead of Von Carstein nearly three full seasons after the Season 92 Draft. This moves Gretzky to ninth in the Season 92 Draft Class and currently only 16 TPE behind eighth place Karol Lamb. Passing Lamb should happen in due course since they have reduced their weekly output to 7-9 capped TPE per week whereas Gretzky is still max earning, but it's going to be difficult to make the next jump as Kimi Raikkonen and Giorgiy Costanzov are seventh and sixth place in TPE respectively and they still hold a convincing 100+ TPE lead over Gretzky. We'll see how things can go next season for Gretzky. I was expecting this season to be a rough one as, when playing on a team of talented players, it is always difficult to shine when you are the worst in the unit and so the just over one point every two games did not surprise me. I'm at a level now though where I should be able to start making an impact in the sim for Season 95, hopefully my updates will help with that change but I don't think it will be a Most Improved candidate improvement, maybe at best like improving to the 60 point mark. VHL Birthday is round the corner, that's always a nice boost for the TPE count. Don't know what we're going to do this year but I look forward to the rewards. I just checked my award predictions for the season and apparently I didn't pick anyone for the Boulet, so fuck me I guess. Luckily it looks like I've got at least four TPE from elsewhere, maybe even six if some player awards go my way and up to potentially eight if Moscow can win the cup. Regardless I'll be happy with 4 TPE as I've not had the best of times with award predictions recently and that would cap off a pretty darn good fantasy season for myself having got 5 TPE from the Super Coach and 6 TPE from VHFL. Since I have 30 odd words left I'll quickly mention my favourite player from the Season 30's Conner Low, who was an absolute beast of a defenseman that I don't think we every really saw the likes of afterwards.

Been a bit of a VHL slog recently because it’s been quite busy social wise with celebrating two birthdays and an anniversary in the space of a week and a half but I’ve been able to keep an eye on things for the most part. One thing I did do recently was step down from updater. Main reason for this is that I was never claiming the TPE and with it being a high-in-demand job, it'd be better to give it to somebody who'd benefit more from it. I'll still be helping the updating team though with stuff like AI detection, which was something I would like to think I played a part in helping the clampdown on in the earlier phases (where people would just Soulja Boy "Word for word, bar for bar" copy and pasting from ChatGPT) although just through the nature of the always evolving technology, it's only going to get more difficult to spot this stuff. The New York season has been interesting, I thought for sure we were going to be skipping the Wildcard but we fell in on a tie-breaker. Wildcard is going to its final game now, hopefully we can pull through but Vancouver are a very good team so it won't be easy. Wayne Gretzky's first season is in the books and the results were about what I expected. Realistically, in a team where he was heavily out-TPE'd by his fellow Americans forwards, it was always going to be tough to get a high volume of chances. What was good though was the efficiency with which Wayne Gretzky handled those chances, finishing top of the league in shooting percentage. It was at this point that I accidentally closed my wordcounter tab that I'm writing on and nearly booted the monitor to the sun but luckily it's kept all of the information. BOG feedback, it's going ok. I've got frustrations with the structure of the Most Improved Player Award that I'll likely make a topic to request it be changed, but on the positive side we had a really good thread when it came to discussions for our builder HOF discussions when we'd had very few in the past (I will take part of the credit for the suggestion that a dedicated thread for builder HOFs would generate more discussion than we'd had previously). When it came to recruiting time, It looks like we got unlucky with the YouTube algorithm as our YouTube ad only got 2.7K views (which appears to be our lowest since our 5th of 8 Thrash94 ads, that one was in Season 80 and had the same amount of views). At the same time though, it's maybe not too much of a surprise as their last ad for a phone management game also got less than 2K views. If we were able to go back to the S74-S83 days of Youtube ads every season to counter for that, those kind of ads might still yet suffice but maybe it's something that's financially not viable at this point.

Vancouver Wolves Press Conference

The best player experience I've had in the M, I was lucky you were there with me! -
I guess for theme week, I will talk about my favourite season in the VHLM which was managing the Las Vegas Aces in Season 55. Here’s a few of the things that happened: - Came in this season to take over from Robbie who, if I recall, lost the job because of some decisions that they’d made roster-wise (If I’m recalling correctly, I think they ran into some trouble either for not playing some members of their roster more than they should have or alienating some members of their roster, although this also probably wasn’t helped by Robbie being Robbie). - The team that he had left me had some good solid members and players there like Advantage’s Dexter Lane, Kyle’s Luka Volkov and Turner’s Slava Aleksei. But the team had a few big weaknesses. One was the lack of goalie (Robbie’s plan had been to keep their own goalie down in the M for this season while they were GM, but they decided against that once they got fired). The other was that (following the draft as well), the team was WAY too pass-heavy. The three best forwards on the team were all pass-first forwards along with the two best defensemen. My concern at the time was making things fun for members and making sure they had a good experience so this didn’t particularly bother me though. - We didn’t have a first rounder in the S55 draft, but in spite of that we picked up quite a few at the time well-known members in the league. The best value pick we got was probably getting Sergei Komarov, who was GooningItUp’s third player at the end of the fifth round and a very key piece for the franchise in the Founders Cup victory the following year. Our earliest pick was at the end of the second round where we picked the now perma-banned Anderson’s player Rudi Ying, who would go on to make a perfectly rational post where he reasoned that my mother had dinosaur breath. We got Jericho’s Mr Shakedown in the third round, which I thought was going to be the high value pick since we were streaming Overwatch together at the time, but I don’t think they ever actually updated them. - Our fourth round selection in the draft was probably the most interesting, which was Trifecta’s player Elijah Mikaelson. Pretty much immediately after the draft, Bushito (GM of the Storm) offered me a first rounder next year for them, and I was all good with that. Following the trade, Trifecta changed their player name to “VHLM Forever” with the idea that they would be in the VHLM forever. This was at least partially true as they never made the VHLM, but also maybe a little misleading as they retired their player the season after. Funnily enough they said they were going to be in the VHLM forever with one of their last players Star as well, so when he told me that, let’s just say I wasn’t exactly surprised they were retired the next season - The regular season was expectedly rough and we only scored 117 goals in the season (for comparison, last season’s Los Angeles Stars team that only recorded 5 wins scored six more goals). However our defense was pretty good despite our lack of goalie for the first portion of the season and we did finish with 19 wins, probably the most memorable one where we defeated Oslo Storm in a shootout having only had three shots the entire game. The good thing was though that we signed a good bunch of additions over the trade deadline. Most importantly saw us being able to replace our BOT goalie with TheLastOlympian’s Shawn Brodeur, along with bringing in a pair of defenseman who would go on to do very good things in the VHL, dermeister’s Casey Jones and Beaviss’ Keaton Louth. We did however have a bit of a setback as mid-season call ups were a thing then and Calgary called up Luka Volkov, although funnily enough had I been more invested in the rules, I could have had the callup denied as it took place after the deadline for call ups, which was the trade deadline - In this five team version of the VHLM, everyone made the playoffs so we had a wildcard series best of 3 against the bottom team in the league that season, the Yukon Rush. Oddly, the index says completely different to what actually happened, the index schedule had us winning two games to one, but the game links show the correct score, which was a more comfortable 2-0 series victory. - The most memorable part of this season though was the Semi-Final series between the league-leading Oslo Storm, who’d finished the regular season with 69 more points than the Aces and had scored 191 more goals than us (Also somewhat interesting was that I would be GMing against my own player Aackckqz Ky). Things started off better than expected, going 1-1 through the first two games of the season and us matching Storm’s shot count, a far cry from the team that only put up three shots against them earlier in the season. Despite being heavily outshot in Game 3, we held on for a 4-3 shootout win. However we could not follow up with another win in game four despite our best offensive performance against Oslo to date, coming up short in a 7-5 loss. - Game Five though is where things get even more interesting. Las Vegas retakes the lead in the series after a 4-2 win, and it’s clear at this point Oslo were starting to sweat. They did go on to win Game Six however it was at this point that Oslo started to make demands that the entire series got re-simmed over roster issues, which lead to a 61 post thread in the game threads (the joys of pre-discord forum activity). The reason for this demand was roster issues. Quik’s (who had just returned from twenty seasons away from the league) future HOF player Mats Johnsson had not been added to the Storm in the league file despite having been added to the team. In addition, rating updates in the sim had been very lacking at this point as players who joined at the trade deadline at 30 TPE (at this point in time, recreates had to bank recreate TPE) were still at 30 TPE despite players like Louth and Jones having earned lots of TPE in that time. The resolution saw Mats Johnsson added to the sim (although rather unfairly at the TPE level of their most recent update, despite other players on both teams last being updated at the deadline) for Game 7. - Ultimately, these changes did not go on to help Oslo as they’d hoped and they were eliminated from the playoffs after the Aces won both the series and game seven 4-3. We then went on to the finals to play Saskatoon, who had several good players, including future Hall of Famers Ay Ay Ron and Gabriel McAllister. While we did take them to overtime twice, we were ultimately no match for the Wild, who wound up sweeping the series. All in all though, it was a very enjoyable and memorable time and it’s definitely my most memorable season I’ve had in the VHLM.

So the new portal just dropped and I’m a fan. Overall, I think Will and Josh have done a terrific job with the portal and I look forward to seeing what more will come down the line. For this article, I’ll break it down into three sections: Likes, Dislikes and Things To Fix (Dislikes will more focus on design choices that I would prefer a difference to whereas Things To Fix is more focused on problems that currently occur). Likes Dark Mode - I’m a frequent dark mode user wherever possible, so the dark mode implementation in the VHL has gone done very well with me. As I’ll mention later, there’s only one place where I found it a bit of a problem, but otherwise, very happy with the addition. Standings - Nice addition putting the logos of each team on the standings and I also like how playoff standings are no longer cluttered with teams that didn’t make playoffs. New Player/User Search Bar - It’s cool to now get Seasons and Usernames for players directly from typing in the name, can see this being a good timesaver. Ability to see Free Agency offers - So I don’t know if this is new or not (I don’t recall seeing it in the past), but being able to view what contracts were offered by each team by clicking on their name is cool. Schedule Link bug fix - This may well have been fixed before this update, but I remember from my time as M GM it was a bit of a pain clicking link on the schedule, because it would always go to a broken link. This has now been fixed to go to the correct place. Additions to Team Pages - It’s nice to see current scoring come up on the team’s page now as, even as someone who is quite well-versed with the portal, I’d still sometimes come to the team page looking for it only to be denied. As someone who is semi-frequently doing a podcast series on best and worst draft picks of the Season 80’s, the draft history is also a big timesaver and cool for keeping team’s history. Dislikes Light mode is sometimes too light - I don’t often view light mode now, but I would say I’m not a fan of changing the headers from black background to white background as in some situations the headers don’t pop like they should. E.g. Team Roster. Update log on dark mode - One of the things we have to do as updaters is keep an eye on how much capped TPE someone has earned in the week, but in this dark mode, I wish the background on the bits that are the weeks (e.g. Week Ending June 2nd) were not dark themselves and more like the colour of the VHL/VHLE/VHLM button in dark mode to clearer split the difference between two weeks. Missing E - It still feels like the E is quite a way behind on the portal compared with the other leagues. As someone who recently set a record in the E that is not tracked by the index (most game winning goals), it would be nice to have that information easier to find instead of comparing every index. Underlines on GM names in Teams Page - This could just be an accidental addition, but I find the underlined GM names to look worse than they did before the change without the underline. Things to Fix Sorting in Team Scoring - So sometimes this works, sometimes this doesn’t, but there’s times if you flick between the different teams and different seasons that you can’t do an ascending sort. It’s not a huge thing because there’s very little occasions outside of PIMs that an ascending sort would be useful, but just something I caught. HOF Career Stats - One thing I did notice was that the HOF Career Stats appear to be stuck on showing every single player in the portals systems rather than breaking it up into pages, and the sorts don’t work even if you use filters to narrow down the number of results, so the page isn’t of much use as it stands. Combining Stats After Trades/Fixing Stats after Position Changes - Maybe this is something that has been fixed and will take effect in later seasons, but it would be nice for trades and position changes to no longer affect the stats pages on the portal as I know there’s been a few players in the past that have been initially missed off of ballots due to trades. In addition, position changes lead to producing some unintentional bad stats that can lead to new users incorrectly interpreting information. E.g. Left Alone being the best defenseman on S90 and S91 when they’ve only just moved to defenseman.

Yeah I did the same, it looks like his spreadsheet was pulling cup winners from the wrong members, but this only appears to affect members who finished 21st and below. I will post the correct payouts ASAP -
Wayne Gretzky is not a rookie and quite frankly, Wayne Gretzky is insulted and appalled that you would force Wayne Gretzky to write about Wayne Gretzky’s first season in the VHL for TPE. Nonetheless, that is what Wayne Gretzky will do. After devastating the VHLE to a point that no VHLE fan will ever feel the same joys again, Wayne Gretzky goes into training or, as Wayne Gretzky refers to it, “asserting dominance”. From the moment he opens the doors to the Americans training facility, it’s evident that Wayne Gretzky is the king of the ice as players, coaches, physios, admin staff, the canteen workers and even the mayor of New York make sure that they are in attendance to show their respect with a guard of honour for the multi-time NHL MVP Wayne Gretzky. Most would be in awe of such a show of respect, but Wayne Gretzky just sees it as another Tuesday. Wayne Gretzky then goes upstairs to meet his subordinate General Manager. The General Manager goes out of his way to say he couldn’t be more excited to see Wayne Gretzky finally set foot on VHL ice, but this is not what Wayne Gretzky wants to know. Wayne Gretzky utters four words: “One point five million”. Wayne Gretzky isn’t amused and isn’t playing around, the contract Wayne Gretzky currently holds is the lowest possible contract offer a VHL player can possibly have. The General Manager frantically starts gesticulating and looking for reasons to blame such as the salary cap and the restrictions on rookie contracts. Wayne Gretzky is not here for excuses though, Wayne Gretzky is here for answers. “Wayne Gretzky is going to give you 100 goals and 100 assists per season from day one. These are not numbers plucked out from thin air, these are numbers born from facts and the facts show that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time. Now the contract is agreed, so Wayne Gretzky will not make demands for you to change said contract but next season that contract isn’t there and you will want more Wayne Gretzky just like every other VHL team wants more Wayne Gretzky. My advice would be this time next season I’m adding an extra word to what I said earlier: “One hundred point five million” or maybe we aren’t having this conversation next season.”. With the meeting concluded, Wayne Gretzky saunters down to the practice rink, looks up at the General Managers window and pings three pucks from mid-ice into the roof of the net, the practice goalie looking devastated. The situation is now clear, the VHL is about to experience “rookie” Wayne Gretzky, and they aren’t ready for it.

Season 94 Draft Class Visualizer
MubbleFubbles replied to MubbleFubbles's topic in VHCS Draft Rankings
Thanks, yeah I was hoping to do a lot more with it, but there not being that much time before draft made it a tight squeeze. Was hoping to have an interactive dashboard with charts to track TPE gain, capped TPE and tables for build and breakdown of TPE earning, but I can get that ready for next year. Also will use a fill aes for the capped TPE chart to give different colors for 6 TPE PT/Welfare/No PT -
https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/17588090/ Also, as a little something extra from stuff I've been learning through R coding, I've got a week-by-week capped TPE earning Cheat Sheet of the prospects in the draft.

The Best Singular Game Finals Performance Of All Time? Can we talk for a second about Gustav Mattias? Not the VHLM Commissioner to be clear but the Seattle Bears forward and PP Defenseman who just casually decided to have one of the best Finals games in recent memory during Seattle Bears victorious finals campaign over London United. In Game 1, Seattle Bears started off the series with a 5-2 victory and a lot of that is thanks to Gustav Mattias who played a contribution in all 5 goals, getting 2 goals and 3 assists. This was the first time since the Season 84 Finals between the Bears and the Warsaw Predators that a 5 point game has been recorded in the Finals (where both Max Torq and Hari Singh Nalwa got 5 point games). What made the performance from Mattias so special though was just how little time they were on the ice for, as they managed to accrue all 5 points in just 15 total minutes of ice time! I’ve not gone any further back than Season 84, but that has to be one of, if not the, best minute-for-minute Finals performances of all time. What’s even better for Mattias is that they went on to have an even more meaningful contribution in Game 7, where Mattias scored the game-winning goal, assisted by the two longest serving members of the Bears team, SEA-D3 and SEA-D1. Donations I just donated $15 for the upcoming season and I was kind of curious as to how much I’ve actually donated over the course of my time here in the VHL (excluding Charity Donations). Now it’s a bit difficult to figure out the exact amount that I’ve donated given that we actually changed currency in 2019 and my donations go all the way back to 2013, but just looking at raw dollar count, I’ve apparently donated $875 to the VHL over the course of my stay here. That was a lot more than I’d expected, I thought it would have perhaps been closer to the $500 range so it came as a surprise that it was that high. I think it does show though that donations don’t necessarily equal success, as one HOF player for $875 isn’t exactly a great conversion rate haha! Draft Talk LA lost their 17th overall pick in the VHL Draft after failing to comply properly with the backup goalie rules and honestly, that’s a huge loss for them. Why? Well guess how many players max-capped this week just gone? That’s right, 17 (although this likely increases to 20 once claims for Maple Dogwood, Lazlo Holmes and Tommy Shelby are approved). The lottery hit is fairly irrelevant as LA won’t mind which of Leandro or Jacob they get, but missing out on a potential max earner is a huge loss, but one that they ultimately deserved for prioritising BOTs over active members of the VHL. Here’s a quick look at the six players whose stock is increasing the most heading into the draft (the figure in brackets is how much higher their average capped TPE over the last three weeks is than their career average capped TPE): 6 - THE MIGHTY ICE WIZARD - (+2.52) THE MIGHTY ICE WIZARD will be a very interesting player to keep an eye on in this draft. Only two teams appear to have a desperate need for a goalie as things stand (LA and London) but a few teams could look at the ICE WIZARD max capping over the last two weeks and consider that an improvement on their currently planned prospect for the future. 5 - LaClapbomb Hitstick IV (+2.64) LaClapbomb currently sits 37th in total TPE in this draft class, but that position could be a little deceiving as they’ve been active every week since joining the league and, now that they’ve got a more consistent hand at claiming welfare, have seen sharp gains in their capped TPE. Being 1 of 29 players who have averaged more than 4 capped TPE in the last 3 weeks, Hitstick could well find themselves sneaking into a second round selection. 4 - Eugene Ryanheart (+2.67) Ryanheart had always been in the very solid 6-9 capped TPE range since joining the league, but they’ve exploded in the last three weeks with two max capped weeks and one 11 capped TPE week. It may not be enough to break into the first round as this is an incredibly top heavy draft with a lot of max earners, but this surge has essentially secured themselves a early-second round selection. 3 - kevin johnathen (+3.07) The best player from Costa Rica that the league has ever seen is becoming even better thanks to their last two weeks of earning which both hit the TPE cap. The Marlins AGM is currently in an interesting situation of being a far better earner than any of the defenseman with less TPE than them, but currently not being able to gain on any of the six defenseman ahead of them. I think players like johnathen are a good example of why London were so comfortable trading out of the first for a high second, because they can see how much talent there is potentially available at the top end of the second round. 2 - Nikita Yolishev (+3.40) I think if there’s a player on this list who could yet sneak into the first round, I think it could well be Nikita Yolishev. Their earnings were hurt early on by a one week TPE ban but since then Yolishev has gone above and beyond to make up for that, especially in the last three weeks where they have hit the TPE cap in each week. Based on their TPE, it looks like they will be the only player on this list playing in the VHLE next season, so it will be interesting to see how their development compares to the rest of the players on this list. 1 - Dorji Khan (+5.57) Dorji Khan joined the league at the trade deadline, but their 5.43 average capped TPE over the course of their career to date is not a fair reflection on their current earnings. Khan did not earn capped TPE over their first four weeks in the league, but they flipped the script recently recording over 10 capped TPE in each of their last four weeks. They may not be quite at the total TPE of a Yolishev or a Ryanheart, but over the last few weeks they have definitely proven they can be as good of an earner as they are.
