River Harrington stood at his now freshly cleaned-out locker at the arena that the Moscow Menace called home, staring at it as if it was going to open up a portal to another dimension or something. It had been a long season, and to be bounced in Game 7 of the Conference Finals wasn’t how any of them wanted to go out this season. He’d even grown out a playoff beard— or a sad excuse for one, really. It was scruffy and a little patchy in some places, so he envied his friends and anybody who could grow proper facial hair. All he knew was that he was going to shave as soon as he got back home. Exhaling into a quiet sigh, the young defenseman checked his phone, and the screen was lit up from a mass of notifications, and he scrolled through them mindlessly until he saw: two new text messages from: Slava. River couldn’t help the faint smile that curved his lips upward, slinging his bag over his shoulder as he made his way towards the massive double doors of the locker room, careful not to step on the logo that took up the a large portion of the carpet (superstitions never die). Maybe things would be alright after all.

S97 is now coming to a proper close, with the Las Vegas Aces securing their Founder’s Cup (props to Sadie for being able to lead her squad to the championship in just her second season, I’m so proud), and the VHL going into the Continental Cup Finals. Both my teams, Davos and Moscow, were eliminated in tragic fashion so I’ve sort of been checked out of what's going on in the sims now. Obviously had a great rookie campaign with Harringtonn, and hopefully I’ll be able to build on that next season, but for now, I’ve signed both him and the legend Lachlan Summers up for the ProAm, and am looking forward to where they end up in the draft. I figured it was time I brought back Lachlan for a tournament since I missed him and his tendency to become a whole brick wall, terrorizing those who dare to try to score on him. The ProAm is so unbelievably fun and a great way to talk to other members of the league you may have seen around but never properly interacted with, so I would highly recommend it. Speaking of which, the ProAm spawned an inside joke that has now become the entire brand for our favorite Mississauga GM, Ace’s, Twitch channel (which everybody should be following by the way, even if just for VHLM draft streams, which are also extremely well done), and I actually made my debut on stream last Monday as the resident Payday 2 expert. Who knew ProAm Marbles would bring so many awesome folks together? I guess that Kirby voice reveal means Sadie and I are one step closer to that podcast we’ve been talking about wanting to do for the past two years. As for real life, I’m nearly halfway through my last semester of college and that much closer to securing that piece of paper. I’ve mentioned it before, but my perception of time has been horrifically messed up since the pandemic, so it feels like so much time has passed yet none at all. As for what comes next to me after so many years of school? That’s to be determined. In other news, those who know me are aware already, but my dog Olli is my entire world and the first dog my family has ever owned after years of me pestering them about adopting. We recently discovered two lumps, no larger than an inch each, on his chest and leg. While the cytology results for the chest mass came back benign, the leg one came back as inconclusive and as a possible tumor, so our vet recommended that we schedule surgery to remove it and get it biopsied. It’s too easy to always assume the worst when it comes to these things, as I assume all pet owners can agree with, but all I wish for is some warm wishes for my little guy for his surgery and recovery to go well next month. He’s 7 years old, but still runs around and plays like a puppy, so the idea of him being sidelined for two weeks looking miserable with stitches on his leg, or anything bad happening to him in general, makes me want to cry. There has been so much going on lately, and I want to once again apologize to my GMs for my lack of locker room activity, but I hope that things die down soon and I’ll be able to put 110% back into the league. However, if anybody ever needs to reach me, my DMs are always open. Thank you to anybody who read to the end and please enjoy this photo of my boy. Catch you in the next one!

MOSCOW, RU — Another thrilling VHL regular season has reached its conclusion and with that, a few rookies are getting their first taste of the VHL playoffs: the most grueling yet gratifying time for the best hockey players in the world once they get their hands on the coveted Continental Cup. The DBC caught up with one of the rising stars of the VHL, River Harrington, for his thoughts on what this means to him. “Obviously I’m stoked. Our hard work this past season has shown and now we’re ready to fight for the Cup,” Harrington said. “It’s something every hockey-loving kid has always dreamed about and I want to have my name up in lights with the best of the best.” We asked Harrington about his experience in the league thus far, and how it’s impacted his game. “I’ve just been trying to pull my own weight, honestly,” Harrington answered, his expression placid. “Playing on a pairing with Jillian Woods meant that I’ve learned a lot from her as well as the other veterans on the team. I hope we carry the synergy we’ve had into the playoffs and take Davos down.”

Another regular season over, another Kirby Rambles! To start, school is really starting to kick back into full swing (I have 13 assignments due by next Sunday, hooray). I’m trying to get back on schedule and try not to procrastinate too hard, though I’ve unfortunately already failed, but I definitely want to be more on top of assignments and things for my last semester of university and finish strong. Onto what matters most, the Continental Cup playoffs! Once again, Davos and Moscow will be facing off in the first round, and it’s guaranteed to be another for the books. These two franchises have a storied rivalry and last season, we know how it ended: with Davos sweeping Moscow in a stunning upset, but eventually falling to Vancouver in the Finals. Obviously I’m split on this series now that I’m involved with both teams, albeit in different ways, as I AGM for Davos but have a player on Moscow. Either way, I hope it’ll be a thrilling series and in a way, I suppose it’s gonna be a win-win for me however it ends. Speaking of the Menace, being a rookie in the VHL really does humble you. I wasn’t expecting superstar numbers by any means, as River ended 47 points (11 goals, 36 assists) in 72 games for 9th in rookie scoring, as well as 98 hits and 111 shots blocked. Honestly, I’m happy with that statline, considering how stacked the Moscow roster is. As we know, the better your team is, the worse your individual performance may be, but at the end of the day, I’m looking for another Cup, one way or another! The entire roster which includes the likes of Maverick Goncalves, Jarmo Ruutu, Pombo, Obuz Schneider Canet du Bocage, and Jillian Woods is certainly a force to be reckoned with, and I hope within the next few seasons, River will be able to slot into the role that Bocage leaves once they retire. I definitely do want to get that scoring up next season, and hopefully be able to break the 50 point milestone, though I’m happy overall with what River accomplished in his rookie year, considering the TPE range in the league. River will be just over 750 TPE after I get this claim in and I’m excited to see what I can do to improve him. With the conclusion of the regular season also comes with VHFL and Super Coach finishing up. My VHFL performance was unfortunately sub par, and I dropped down to third place in my group suddenly in the last few sims, which will secure me 4 TPE. Similarly in Super Coach, I was able to finish within the 4 TPE margin once more, which is significantly better than my performance last season, which I was happy to see. 8 uncapped TPE is huge and I’m always happy to see good results from a long season. Time will tell how many TPE I’ll be able to snatch up from the VHL playoff bracket challenge! This will be it for another rambling session. I know I always say I’m busy, but I genuinely sort of feel overwhelmed at times with life, school, and everything. However, I have an excellent support system and I’ll try not to worry over every single thing. Thank you to those who read all the way through and see you next time!

Unfortunately, after getting a trivia question wrong and having the correct one eaten and sent to the void by the Portal, I’ve been forced to do something I haven’t done in a while, which is create both a .com article and graphic in the same week. Genuinely, I have no idea why the correct trivia question didn’t get claimed for TPE but maybe that was just an issue on my end. Anyways, it’s going to be a relatively short Kirby Rambles here, ,just discussing the TDL, which happened to fall on a Thursday this season. No exciting moves went down unfortunately, which made it difficult to craft a graphic for Theme Week but I managed to crank one out yesterday night. I realize how difficult it is for BOG to come up with and agree on what theme topic to use, but the last few seasons definitely haven’t been all that interesting, besides one that stood out to me which was Retro. Otherwise it’s been a quiet week on the forum. On the other end, I just started my last semester of college on Tuesday so I’m going to try to start strong and push through until graduation. Hope everybody has a great start to their week!

HC Davos Dynamo Press Conference You ONLY have to answer 6 of the 8 questions Week Of January 19th 2025 - January 26th 2025 1. Happy Theme Week! Thoughts on this season’s theme? 2. If you are answering this presser before the TDL, what moves do you believe Davos should make for a better run at the Cup? If you are answering after, what are your opinions on the team’s moves at the TDL, if any? 3. What advice would you give to your past self when you first joined the VHL, given everything you know now? 4. What color stick tape does your player use? 5. Describe your player’s personality and drop a fact that others may not know about them! 6. Antonia Bucatini has had a career year so far with 72 points in 47 games (as of Monday, January 20th)! How many points do you believe she will finish the season with? 7. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be and why? 8. What kind of video games are your favorite, if any (ex. FPS, interactive, platformer, fighting, RPG, etc.)?

Going into his rookie season in the VHL, River Harrington wasn’t sure about many things— would he match up to the veterans that have already dominated for years? Would his style of play even translate? Could he make an impact on the ice? And most importantly, would he be able to make connections? He graduated to the big leagues with his best friend, Brandon Petan Jr., and his special someone in Slava Kovalenko, but that last question lingered in the back of his mind. It was answered sooner than he thought. When he isn’t on the ice burying shots into the back of the net and putting his body on the line for his team, River can most likely be found playing video games and occasionally streaming the sessions on Twitch for fans who wanted a better look at River, the person, not just the player. As expected, Brandon was often a name that popped up on these streams, as well as Xhekajs Middletoe, and even Slava when he wasn’t nose deep in a novel. But then, new names emerged like River’s fellow Moscow teammate, Pombo, Boris Bone-Breaker, Jay Sikes, and veterans like Andrew Skilton and Matteo Stefano. Despite his doubts, River had actually. . . made new friends. Ones he could find after games, catch up with, and go out and have a few beers with while planning what game they'd play next. If he was being honest, it was the most welcomed and embraced he’s ever felt in his life.

Welcome to another edition of Kirby Rambles! Unfortunately this will be my last Rambles before my final semester at college begins, and I’m not quite sure I’m ready to be a functioning adult once I graduate, but the date is fast approaching. It’s kind of weird how my perception of time has been extremely messed up ever since the pandemic, because it felt like these past four years flew by like nothing. I can still remember not being able to sleep before my first day of college because I was so incredibly nervous. Anyway, enough about me. Let’s get into the VHL stuff. With Theme Week commencing tomorrow, I’m looking forward to seeing what topic BOG has decided on. I’ve also finally sent in my donation for this season so the doubles week for this Sunday and next will hopefully do wonders. My player, River Harrington, has had a good rookie season but I wouldn’t call it stellar. Since he’s on a strong Moscow team with a lot of support and on a pairing with the reigning best offensive defenseman Jillian Woods, this is to be expected, but as long as the team is successful, I’m just happy to contribute any way I can. Kinda crazy that I now get to play on the same VHL team as my first ever M GM and got to see many wonderful folks on that S84 waiver Marlins team follow in his footsteps! I definitely want to cook up a longer player interview spot in the future, but I’ll have to brainstorm and really get into the River character once more. In 44 games, River has 28 points (7 goals, 21 assists), and I was hoping my SC-PA gap would help with accumulating goals but ultimately not. Definitely something to workshop once I bank enough TPE to make a difference. Honestly, hybrid attributes are really interesting to me because unlike a goalie, where you can just dump TPE into one trait and know exactly when it’s going to bump up, you really have to think and strategize about what to do with hybrid attributes and make smarter decisions, which has been fun to try to figure out. Davos and Moscow’s seasons have been interesting thus far considering it’s a dogfight for the top half of the conference, with the lower half lagging behind after many seasons of being the more dominant of the two VHL conferences. Overall, Davos sits 4th and Moscow sits 3rd with just a single point separating each of the top four. It could go any way by the end of the season and I’m looking forward to seeing how it pans out. Onto VHFL, where I currently sit second in my group by just 14.4 points. With another half of the season to go, there is a lot of time to make up that gap and I’m hoping my squad of Goncalves, Bucatini, Tuominen, Leitner, Hardy, and Spider Panda can bring it home for me for a third season in a row. I’m still super confident with my picks and if my team, especially Bucatini and Goncalves, keep scoring and landing those SB and hits like mad, I could be poised for success once more. With that, concludes another Kirby Rambles! Thank you for tagging along and as always, hope to see everyone in the next edition.

S97 marked the start of River Harrington’s rookie season in the VHL. As of Sunday, January 12, River has amassed 22 points (6 goals, 16 assists) in 33 games, which is a respectable number as a rookie defenseman. I’ve been focusing more on his offensive traits with the TPE I’ve earned, so hopefully we can see those numbers increase. He’s also a +10 for Moscow, with 2 GWG and 4 PPG. As for the defensive side of things, River’s racked up 35 hits and 41 shots blocked. To summarize what I think about my player’s performance thus far, I would love to aim for PPG, so we’ll see if that goal is attainable by the end of the season, though I know it may take a while to actually get my foot in the door in the big leagues, especially since this is my first rodeo with a skater, which is of course, so much different than being a goalie, and requires you to really think about what you’re spending TPE on and how much to bank before investing in more attributes. It’s been super fun to see how others have built their players and try to bounce ideas off of them as possible. Here’s to a successful rookie campaign!
