So you have joined the VHL. Welcome! Now your next step is figuring out who you want your player to be. Do you want your player to be the best lockdown defenseman in the league? A player who snipes those corners every game? The best playmaking center? These are all possible now. However, I highly recommend figuring out your plan early. Of course all the things I recommend are just recommendations you can do whatever you want. This is your free time and we are here to enjoy it together.

 

My Recommendations

 

Earning

 

Alright so there are 3 different types of earners in the league. The people called "clickers", the mid earners, and the max earners. All of these players are incredibly important for the league, but you as a new member will likely no know who you will be. It is possible you may become burned out quickly. If this happens, you can always welfare earn and simply enjoy the community. For this reason I highly recommend that any new member choose to build their player like a welfare player would for at least the first 2 seasons. I do believe that every member can get 10 TPE very quickly if you play in the M without much hassle, but some weeks we just want to click which isn't a problem because that 6 TPE is still helpful to your GM and your player.

 

Builds

 

There are countless different ways you could build your player, but I person believe that the most important attribute in the league is stick checking. The strength you get plus the defense will help you not only get the puck, but it will help you keep the puck for as long as possible. For this reason I recommend new players put at least 30 TPE into it before touching any other attributes. Next you need to choose what type of player you are going to be. I recommend choosing 1 other main attribute to attack whether that be scoring, passing, or even checking. All of these types of players will be successful in the VHL, but it is important not to try to be the best at everything. You need to choose one thing and slowly build up your talent in all of them.

 

Secondary Attys

 

So you have gotten your defense up and your main attribute up. Now you need to choose just hoe much you want to improve the "secondary" attributes. These are in general puck handling, skating, and checking. All of these have important uses, but your final build ideally would want to have only 2 of these leaned on heavily. You can choose any of them, but every point you focus on checking you lose in defense or you main stat. This is true with all of the stats. For example, my player currently has 83 defense and 82 puck handling. This isn't very ideal and it shows when my player fairly often disappoints. If I would of put those point I put into puck handling into either defense or skating I would like be a better player.

 

Don't Change Your Build!

 

One problem we all face early in our careers is being on a team that we might not fit on exactly. We may see that our current team needs someone to be a playmaker. You maybe are making a grinding defensive forward, but you decide to help your team and build your player as a playmaker for that season. Suddenly you have slightly broken your build. Especially for the lower earners, every point matters and if you are spending points early on skills that won't matter to your final build you may be making a mistake. I highly recommend letting your GM fix problems that their roster has and not make problem for your player in the future.

 

Overall

 

The whole player making experience is about checks and balances. It is a tight crunch doing everything, but if you are smart you can make a HOF player if you are a welfare player. This is something I truly believe too. A perfectly built welfare player played well by their GM will outperform a poorly built max-earner.

Debatable for the stick checking, but for someone who never been in a hockey sim or use STHS, it's a good introduction.

As a newbie, this information was very helpful to me, thank you. I would like to ask a question, if you allow me: if there are any exact numbers that I could aim for? I see numbers of 82 and 83, but you say that's not ideal.

@nurxcurrently wants to re-roll his player. So probably not the best to aim for what he did.😅

 

But as a just new player in the VHLM. The super safe starting ground I give to all my players is 30 PC, 30 DC, 34 OV. That will give your the defense and offense to be a highly useful player very early at 94 TPE. From there how you branch out depends on the type of player you want:

Power Forward/Checking Dman: 28 BC
Center: 19 FO before anything else
Forward in general/Offensive/Two-way Defenseman: 67 OV
Defensive Defenseman: 56 DC and 70 PC
Sniper: Add 21 to SS after the OV.


After that any leftover goes into DK/SH to finish off your VHLM build at 200 TPE.

That's basically the TL;DR of how to build in the VHLM. Never touch the actual PA attribute if you're a forward, as a dman it can be useful, but OV is just better at the VHLM level. So save it for later.

I have to ask the question.  The premise of this article seems to come down to the last statement:

 

A perfectly built welfare player played well by their GM will outperform a poorly built max-earner.

 

How many players are "Played well by their GM" regardless of being a welfare player, a max-earner, or at some point in between?

Can someone write an article called, "How to use your players effectively, a guide to playing welfare earners, max-earners and everyone in between"

look at the teams with similar rosters and see which team overperforms that is how you find out what teams play their players the best. For example, love it or hate the pre-meta Vancouver team have the meta players but also paired them with a few non meta players that really secured their championship team.
