Logan Laich Hands Cologne Captaincy to Thomas O'Malley

Recommended Posts

There was very little democracy involved in the subsequent naming and receiving of the Captains and Assistant Captains for the Cologne Express. The plan, originally, was for the two big name draftee's Thomas O'Malley and Mason Richardson to take a leadership role and help cement the core of the Express along with last seasons captain, Logan Laich.

However in a gesture of good will and fortitude, Laich willingly handed over his captaincy to the rookie, Thomas O'Malley. In interviews leading up to the draft, O'Malley had expressed more than just mild interest in becoming a captain for a VHL team. He even went as far as to state that it was his lifelong dream to be remembered as one of the true leaders of a VHL franchise.

After joining the Express this past off season, O'Malley was quick to introduce himself to all the players on the roster, and instantly assume a leadership role. Despite his young age, O'Malley is one of the most well rounded hockey players to ever play in the VHL. As opposed to walking around with swagger or confidence, Thomas was eager to bond and communicate with his new teammates, indicating that Cologne was in fact his home and he wanted to be here.

After meeting him and spending some time with him, and realizing that it was his dream to go on and be Captain, Logan approached the coaching staff and asked to be removed in favor of Thomas. Despite himself being loyal to the Cologne franchise, Logan felt that Thomas is the perfect blend of everything in a hockey player. He has the star power that draws in fans, he has the skill set that can steal you games, he has the fortitude and toughness to be a player in grind it out situations. Lastly, he has the character and leadership abilities to represent the Cologne squad. While Laich himself has some of those attributes, he isn't quite as well put together as the young forward. The move is a show a gesture of good will from Laich, but also a big vote of confidence in the first overall draft pick from Season 40. Logan feels that not only this season, but for many to come Thomas O'Malley will be a true leader for the Cologne Express.
