The VHL Minor League is an integral part of the VHL as a whole. It is the first thing that any new players will really sink their teeth into, and has the ability to make or break someone's long term prospects in the VHL.  As it stands right now, the VHLM is an effective league, with lots of positives and things going for it. With no changes, the league would operate effectively and do a good job of acclimating new members to the VHL way of life.

However, perhaps there are some other creative ways of encouraging activity at the VHLM level.  What we do know, is that people are generally engaged in activities based on a few different factors.

First, people like to hear their own name.  When someone mentions your player in an article, you're far more inclined to read the article, and find ways of getting your name in there again.  Generally, players who put up more points, get mentioned a lot more than those that don't.  Is there a way for us to address this?

Second, many people are motivated by high score lists, rankings charts, and other competitve points systems.  Are there possibly ways to tap into the competitive inner nature of many of our newer members to try and encourage activity?

Third, there are many folks who are encouraged to remain active based on the social aspect of the message boards.  Chatting about their League of Legends games, their extracurricular activities, or their favorite boy bands, can be a way to keep people engaged in the league.

Finally, some people like to feel like explorers.  Some new members are the types that like to feel like they are the first to discover things, or want to work towards a greater purpose, aside from just dumping points into their player.  There may be some creative ideas that the VHLM, or VHLM GMs, at the very least, could attempt to do to try and keep their players connected to the league at large.

Ultimately, the degree to which new members to the VHLM feel engaged, is a function of how engaged their GM is.  Contacting members through Private Messages, setting up fun little challenges and high score lists for the team, and finding ways to have their players get mentioned in articles and podcasts, is actually far more important to being an All Star GM, then getting the perfect lines sent in, or making sure the right players get the right ice time - though these are both important factors as well.

Over the next few weeks I will be examining a few of these different member personality types, and bringing forth ideas on how the VHLM could creatively cater to them.  I will also be laying out some potential ideas for GMs on how they can engage and challenge the players on their own teams so that they will be encouraged to remain active in the league for a longer period of time.

It is impossible to retain every new member that enters the league, and generally VHLM GMs do a great job of staying active and trying to roster a competitive team, but there is always room for improvement.  A healthy VHL is ultimately a sign of an healthy Minor league.  Let's keep pushing to find ways to improve it!

Great read, I really agreed with number one on the list, as I always loved seeing my player's name mentioned in articles, it felt like I was doing good, and I was being recognized in the league. Activity is a big thing in the VHLM. So good job on this. 556 words.

All good!

The VHLM mag is a great new(ish) addition to the league. Also there are draft rankings/discussion going on all the time. I do agree, however, that GM's of VHLM teams are at the forefront is driving new members to be active.

I look forward to reading your next few articles, nice work

VHLM This Week has also been a good addition.

There are always few comments on MSs and even 590s and it would be good if more people commented, especially on new members' threads. I don't particularly care but for a new member it can be discouraging.
