VHLM Awards

The VHLM is constantly evolving to become a better league with small and big changes being implemented every other season. These changes are brought around by new and old members alike who want to see the VHLM grow and become a more enjoyable experience for first gens and recreates. Many seasons ago the VHLM implemented their own original logos for each of the ten franchises to give the league a more authentic feeling. There is still a part of the VHLM that sticks out like a sore thumb and that is the league awards.

The VHLM awards are currently named after NHL players, and they have been since Season 2. For 40 seasons VHLM players have made it their goal to win these awards. The award names have no relation to the league that has been running successfully for almost eight years now. We have an incredible amount history here, so there is no excuse for having awards named after NHL players.

I'm here today to change this as the VHLM is officially changing all of the individual award names. Award names are an important part to any league and we didn't want to name them after players who have only dominated the minor leagues for eight seasons. We did however look to name awards after players who have won that specific award in the VHLM. Not only that, but awards will be named after players that belong to members who have left a positive impact on the VHLM. This could be through being a VHLM GM, commissioner, recruiter, and just being a strong advocate for VHLM change and success. Without further ado, here are the first four new VHLM award names.

Top Goal Scorer

Alexander Chershenko Trophy

The trophy formerly known as the Hull Trophy awarded to the top goal scorer in the VHLM will now be called the Alexander Chershenko Trophy. Contrary to what I said earlier Chershenko didn't actually win this award when he played in the VHLM. However, he did win the same award three times in the VHL. His player agent is Victor and it is obvious that Victor has had a major impact on the VHLM during his time on the blue team.

Top Defenseman

Ryan Sullivan Trophy

The award formerly known as the Bourque Trophy that is awarded to the top defenseman in the VHLM will now be called the Ryan Sullivan Trophy. Sullivan won the VHLM top defenseman award while playing for Brampton in Season 28 when he scored 102 points and had 320 hits. His player agent is Advantage who was a successful general manager in the VHLM as the GM of the Kolari Panther. He has also been a part of the BoG and apart of many recent VHLM changes and discussions. His journey is far from over though as he has now accepted the role of VHLM commissioner.

Top Two-Way Forward

Matt Bentz Trophy

The award formerly known as the Yzerman Trophy for the top two-way forward will now be known as the Matt Bentz Trophy. Matt Bentz won the top two-way forward award in Season 8 playing for the Minot Gladiators when he scored 76 goals and had 26 hits. He also won the top goal scorer award that season. His player agent, Matt, served as the VHLM commissioner from Season 8 to Season 14 and was an important cog in creating the foundations of the VHLM.

Top Goalie

Benoit Devereux Trophy

The award formerly known as the Sawchuk Trophy for the top goalie in the VHLM will now be known as the Benoit Devereux Trophy. Benoit Devereux won the award for top goalie in the VHLM while playing for Toledo in Season 9. Matt Defosse or Cowboy was a key pillar contributor to league success in the early days and to the VHLM. Benoit Devereux also holds one of the best winning records for goaltenders in VHLM history.

Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of the new award names to be announced later this season.

Content: 3/3 - You easily met the minimum and it was a well-written and interesting article. Should be pretty cool to have the VHLM awards named after VHL and VHLM players now - helps to emphasize the history of the league!

Grammar: 2/2 - Great job here, didn't notice anything wrong.

Appearance: 1/1 - Looks good, used pictures and headlines that were effective

Overall: 6/6

Not that I'm arguing because he probably did good things as VHLM Commissioner, but dude won two-way forward with one hit every three games?

Yeah i added that stat to show how different the league was back then apparently hits didn't mean two way, it was more of a +/- i'd guess.
