TheLastOlympian07 2,388
Hello all and welcome to the Season 18 VHL Entry Draft Tournament. I will put all 29 draftees into a double knockout tournament. They were drawn together by random. The reason this is a double knockout is because someone like Joey Clarence could have been paired up with Daisuke Kanou in the first matchup and he could have been eliminated if people were to vote for Daisuke Kanou. That would mean Joey Clarence would be 29th out of 29 draftees which we all know isn't true. Well let's get down to business; our first match-up is Round 3, Pick 20, Mathias Chouinard vs round 1, Pick 3, Jukka Hakkinen. Round 3, Pick 20 - Calgary Wranglers select RW Mathias Chouinard Career Awards: Season 19 Founders Cup Champion with the Minot Gladiators Season 19 Skylar Rift Trophy winner as Playoff MVP (formally Phil Esposito Trophy) Season 19 Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy winner as Most Assists (formally Adam Oates Trophy) Season 21 VHL All-Star Selection while playing with the Calgary Wranglers Season 22 VHL All-Star Selection while playing with the Calgary Wranglers Season 23 Continental Cup winner with the Calgary Wranglers Season 23 Devon Marlow-Marta winner with Calgary Wranglers (formally Punch Imlach Trophy) Season 23 Daisuke Kanou Trophy winner as Playoff MVP (formally Gordon Howe Trophy Season 24 Continental Cup winner with the HC Davos Dynamo Season 24 Terrence Fong Trophy winner with the HC Davos Dynamo (formally Vladimir Kostka Trophy) Season 24 Mike Szatkowski Trophy winner (formally Mario Lemiuex Trophy) Season 24 VHL All-Star Selection while playing with the HC Davos Dynamo Season 25 Continental Cup winner with HC Davos Dynamo Season 25 Victory Cup winner with HC Davos Dynamo Season 25 Terrence Fong Trophy winner with the HC Davos Dynamo (formally Vladimir Kostka Trophy) Season 25 VHL All-Star selection with the HC Davos Dynamo Season 18 Statistics: Regular Season: S18 (MIN) - 72 GP / 49 G / 70 A / 119 P / +28 / 43 PIM / 94 H / 352 SH / 6 GWG Playoffs: S18 (MIN) - 0 GP / 0 G / 0 A / 0 P / 0 / 0 PIM / 0 H / 0 SH / 0 GWG Mathias Chouinard began his post draft career back in the minors with the Minot Gladiators. The Gladiators had a very solid team as Chouinard had scored 49 goals and assisted on 70 for 119 points. Remarkably, with 119 points, he was only 5th in team scoring! With all that fire power you would think that Minot made the playoffs easily but instead they finished 3rd and missed the playoffs by 22 points. The Brampton Battalion and Saskatoon Wild made the playoff on the backs of high scoring and great goaltending. Season 19 Statistics: Regular Season: S19 (MIN) - 72 GP / 82 G / 113 A / 195 P / +53 / 74 PIM / 129 H / 661 SH / 9 GWG Playoffs: S19 (MIN) - 12 GP / 13 G / 14 A / 27 P / +4 / 13 PIM / 24 H / 118 SH / 1 GWG Mathias' 2nd season in the minors was a major success. He led the Minot Gladiators in points this time around. He scored 82 goals and assisted on 113 for a total of 195 points. The magical season didn't end there as the Gladiators were far and away the best team in the North American Conference. They went on to play the Saskatoon Wild who they dispatched in a hard 7 game series. They moved on to face the Kolari Panthers in the finals and easily beat them in an anti-climatic 5 game series win. Chouinard had 27 points in 12 games. The Minot Gladiators just had to much fire power this time around and proved maybe offense does win championships once in a while. Season 20 Statistics: Regular Season: S20 (CAL) - 72 GP / 32 G / 60 A / 92 P / -24 / 21 PIM / 23 H / 345 SH / 1 GWG Playoffs: S20 (CAL) - 0 GP / 0 G / 0 A / 0 P / 0 / 0 PIM / 0 H / 0 SH / 0 GWG After his magical season in the minors, Chouinard graduated to the VHL. He did pretty good considering the team was just going to enter a rebuilding cycle. He scored 32 goals and assisted on 60 for 92 points. This was pretty good for a rookie coming from the VHLM. This was good enough got 4th in team scoring. However, the team missed the playoffs by a massive 44 points. A good year by Choiunard wasted. Season 21 Statistics: Regular Season: S21 (CAL) - 72 GP / 55 G / 63 A / 118 P / -17 / 13 PIM / 26 H / 419 SH / 7 GWG Playoffs: S21 (CAL) - 0 GP / 0 G / 0 A / 0 P / 0 / 0 PIM / 0 H / 0 SH / 0 GWG After a great rookie season, Mathias just keeps on chugging along as he improved every aspect of his game. He went from 32 goals to 55, 60 assists to 63 and 92 points to 113. Hell, even his -24 improved to -17. However, after all this player improvement, the team as a whole fell back in the standings and finished 54 points out of a playoff spot. Season 22 Statistics: Regular Season: S22 (CAL) - 72 GP / 50 G / 47 A / 97 P / +24 / 24 PIM / 8 H / 457 SH / 11 GWG Playoffs: S22 (CAL) - 7 GP / 3 G / 5 A / 8 P / 0 / 5 PIM / 2 H / 34 SH / 1 GWG After a year of improvement, Chouinard regressed a little bit coming into his 3rd VHL season. He still broke the 50 goal barrier and he assisted on 47 for 97 points. His +/- improved greatly from -24 to -17 to +24 in 3 short years. He also led the team in scoring for the first time in his career beating out Evgeni Fydorov by 6 points. He also made it to VHL post season play for the first time in his career, The Wranglers came in 30 points behind the division leading Toronto Legion but also 44 points up on the 3rd place New York Americans. The Wranglers however fell in a 7 game series. Chouinard lead the team in points again with 8 in 7 games. Season 23 Statistics: Regular Season: S23 (CAL) - 72 GP / 43 G / 43 A / 86 P / +14 / 28 PIM / 29 H / 377 SH / 6 GWG Playoffs: S23 (CAL) - 12 GP / 9 G / 10 A / 19 P / +9 / 13 PIM / 3 H / 47 SH / 4 GWG Here we see another small decline in points as he reached a career low with 86 points. Funny to say this was a bit of a letdown considering it is 86 points. He scored 43 goals and assisted on 43 as well. His +/- regressed to +14. The Calgary Wranglers finished the season in 2nd place again but instead of it being a 30 points difference last year, it was only 1 point this year. That just goes to show how much things can change in 1 year. In the playoffs, Toronto was easily dispatched by the Wranglers in 5 games. In the finals, the Wranglers went up against the scrappy team from Helsinki. In the end the Wranglers prevailed from a 7 game back and forth series. Mathias Chouinard led the team in playoff scoring with 9 goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 12 games. He was later named the Gordon Howe Trophy winner (now Daisuke Kanou Trophy). He also won his first Continental Cup in Season 23. Season 24 Statistics: Regular Season: S24 (CAL) - 27 GP / 14 G / 10 A / 24 P / -4 / 12 PIM / 13 H / 136 SH / 1 GWG S24 (DAV) - 47 GP / 43 G / 57 A / 100 P / +67 / 21 PIM / 20 H / 296 SH / 8 GWG Playoffs: S24 (DAV) - 11 GP / 5 G / 8 A / 13 P / +7 / 2 PIM / 1 H / 65 SH / 1 GWG Mathias started the season like he would any other. He was training with his team but after winning the Cup, the Wranglers decided to rebuild. Mathias knew this but decided to stay with the team anyway. He played 27 games to start the season with Calgary scoring 14 goals and assisting on 10 for 24 points. That's when GM Jardy Bunclewirth came up to him and asked if he would want to help speed up the rebuild by getting traded to a contender. Mathias complied and off he went to Davos, Switzerland. Mathias Chouinard was traded with a Season 26 Calgary 3rd round pick (later turned out to be defenseman Stanislav Czerkawski) for fellow Season 18 draft pick David Vidal and a Season 25 Davos 1st Rounder (later turned out to be defenseman Johannes Hwoarathmund). The change of scenery seemed to reignite Mathias as he scored 43 goals and assisted on 57 for 100 points in just 47 games. Mathias Chouinard won his first regular season trophy as he won the Mario Lemieux as the player with the most points in the regular season. The Wranglers ended up finished 3rd in the Conference while HC Davos Dynamo finished 1st by 9 points in the European Conference. In the playoffs, Davos would go on to knock out Helsinki in 5 games and then go on to face the Toronto Legion who they dispatched in 6 games. Mathias Chouinard is a back to back Continental Cup Champion. Season 25 Statistics: Regular Season: S25 (DAV) - 72 GP / 49 G / 58 A / 107 P / +50 / 24 PIM / 38 H / 433 SH / 9 GWG Playoffs: S25 (DAV) - 11 GP / 6 G / 5 A / 11 P / +6 / 0 PIM / 3 H / 39 SH / 1 GWG Mathias came back for one more season in Season 25. He scored 49 goals and assisted on 58 for a total of 107 points. He was an amazing +50 and only took 24 PIM. HC Davos battled Vasteras Iron Eagles all season for the number 1 spot in the conference. HC Davos prevailed and they went on to beat the Iron Eagles in the playoffs in 6 games. In the finals, HC Davos met a plucky New York American team, but they beat them easily in 5 games. Mathias Chouinard finished the playoffs with 11 points in 11 games. He was a back to back to back Continental Cup Champion. Career Statistics: Regular Season: Career (MIN) - 144 GP / 131 G / 183 A / 314 P / +81 / 117 PIM / 223 H / 1013 SH / 15 GWG Career (CAL/DAV) - 434 GP / 286 G / 338 A / 624 P / +110 / 167 PIM / 157 H / 2463 SH / 43 GWG Playoffs: Career (MIN) - 12 GP / 13 G / 14 A / 27 P / +4 / 13 PIM / 24 H / 118 SH / 1 GWG Career (CAL/DAV) - 41 GP / 23 G / 28 A / 51 P / +22 / 20 PIM / 9 H / 185 SH / 7 GWG There we have it guys, Mathias Chouinard's career in 1887 words or less. I am a firm believer than he should be in the Hall of Fame. 624 points in 434 games? C'mon man, thats more than enough I believe. Alexander Sauve is in the Hall of Fame and he has less points and less Continental Cups than Chouinard. I don't know about you but this was a draft steal in the 3rd round of the Season 18 VHL Entry Draft, good on you Calgary. Next week I will post Jukka Hakkinen's career recap then we can have a vote to see who you want to move on. scoop 3,432
29 draftees, eh? Why not make it an even 32 and throw in Geno Esposito, Jakob Kjeldsen, and Dante Terragni (the three GM players from S18).
