Calgary, AB -- For a team coming off of its first Continental Cup in about 15 seasons, it would be easy to rest on the laurels and go into the following season with the same team. If it works once, why wouldn't it work again?

However, with so many teams bringing in new talent, particularly in the European Conference, Calgary's front office believed that it needed to revamp the team and become stronger for any shot at a repeat. To that end, the team agreed with Bismarck Koenig, formerly of the Cologne Express, to a one-year deal.

Koenig is expected to instantly become a first-line playmaker for a team that relied more on depth than transcendent stars last season. Coupled with another move or two, Koenig could help completely reshape the Calgary squad.

"I've got to say, I'm extremely happy with picking up Koenig," Calgary goaltender Hans Wingate said. "I didn't think that last year was going to be our time; I was always looking at Season 45 all along. And now that we're here, I think that Koenig helps give us an amazing shot at a repeat."

To make room for Koenig, Calgary shipped forward Jackson Miller and Nicklas Karlsson to the Cologne Express for draft considerations. Wingate said that he'll miss having Miller and Karlsson on the team - "I'm super happy we were able to get Miller and his agent their first titles in a while," Wingate said - he understands the move by the front office. Although Koenig is only signed for one year, he is entering just his fourth season in the league and doesn't face the same depreciation demands as Miller.

As Quebec City sold off many of their pieces, Calgary's main competition will be New York, who traded for old Calgary nemesis Niklaus Mikaelson. Coming off last year's playoffs, though, Wingate is expecting big things for Calgary and feels confident heading into the season.
