Wranglers Making Moves

The Calgary Wranglers have been busy the past week, with General Manager Austin Gow making a couple of moves to bolster the roster. First Gow shored up the blue ice for the Wranglers by acquiring veteran goaltender Ariel Weinstein from the New York Americans in exchange for two second round and one first round draft choice. Weinstein is a bit of high risk, high reward type of player for the Wranglers as he has been known to be absent from practise for the past couple of seasons. The Wranglers are hoping that after signing an extension to spend the rest of his career in Calgary, Weinstein will regain the drive he had when he first entered the league.

Next on the agenda for the Wranglers and Gow was to attend the Season Fifty VHL Entry Draft. The club headed into the draft with the second, tenth, and sixteenth overall picks. With the first of three picks in the draft the Wranglers were able to bring in Theo Axelsson, a highly skilled power-forward that will suit up in red and white in the upcoming season. Axelsson played the past season for the Brampton Blades of the VHLM, finishing second in the league in goals with sixty-five, and second in points with 129. Axelsson's great season in the VHLM helped lead the Blades to the best record in the regular-season, while also opening the eyes of many scouts that came to see him night in and night out. Axelsson will be a key piece to the Wranglers success for years to come.

The next prospect that feel into the laps of Wranglers management was goalie Joanna Akerfeldt. A player that likely shouldn't have been on the draft board at the number ten position, Akerfeldt will spend at least one more season in the VHLM with the Ottawa Lynx. Akerfeldt had a banner season in the VHLM with no real blue chip goalie prospects he lead the way. The Lynx didn't have the strongest roster in-front of Akerfeldt last season, but he held his team in even though he faced the second most shots for non computer goalies. Akerfeldt is currently behind Weinstein, but his time will come soon in the VHL.

The last pick for the Wranglers in the draft was defenseman Luke Matthews. Matthews doesn't come with the same ceiling as the two prior draft picks, but Matthews could possibly be a future VHLer in a few seasons. Matthews like Akerfeldt will head back down to the VHLM for another season, after being drafted by the Moscow Red Wolves in the VHLM draft this season as well. Moscow looks to have a good roster heading into his season, so Matthews will be exposed to a high level of play even before stepping on the VHL ice.

With the trade and the draft, the Wranglers are looking to compete this season in the VHL. With two quality teams in the conference already, the team may have to add a few more pieces before they can call themselves contenders. With or without those pieces in should be a very interesting season in Calgary this year.

I hate this title lol, of course you would opt in last minute and win twice! now i dont feel bad about giving the first pick to Moscow :P Anyways, onto the article, Calgary had a very good draft, taking Axelsson and Akerfeldt, plus trading for Weinstein. hopefully that goalie situation wont get messy for them next season.
