Legion Seeking to Complete Historic Run

 

When the Toronto Legion won the Continental Cup last season, it was the sixth time in VHL history that a team won consecutive championships. Most recently had been the Helsinki Titans in S45 and S46, and entering S47, they looked like a team that could perform the league's first three-peat. It was not meant to be for the young team, and they failed to reach the finals after losing to the Stockholm Vikings. They did at least make the playoffs, though; of the five teams prior to the current Toronto squad to win back-to-back Cups, only two of them made the playoffs in the following season. Neither of those teams that did so managed to make it to the finals. For Toronto to do that much would be history, but obviously they are looking for nothing less than a third championship.

 

With half of the season gone by, the Legion are in a good spot. They have the best record in the league, seven points ahead of the second-place Express. It is largely on the back of Hans Wingate that they are doing this well. While their 96 goals is a respectable amount, it ranks them at just 4th in the VHL. Meanwhile, they've allowed just 58 goals in 36 games; this is 12 fewer than the Express and 21 fewer than the Meute, who have allowed the second and third fewest, respectively. Wingate, playing in his final season, is currently sporting a 0.940 save percentage. A season after Greg Clegane set a new single-season GAA record, Wingate is already looking to challenge it. The mark set last season was 1.57, besting a 22-year old record. Wingate's 1.47 puts him on track to take hold of the record.

 

Hans Wingate is undoubtedly the top candidate for MVP thus far.

 

This is just Wingate's third season with the team, so he hasn't yet experienced a losing season with the Legion. Max Molholt has been with the team since S45, so he has. Like Wingate, though, he has always been a fantastic player for the Legion. As a rookie, Molholt scored 52 goals and put up 101 points. He had a bit of a down year in S47 with just 89 points, but aside from that, he's had over 100 points every season of his career. This season, he's struggling again. He is on pace to finish the season with career lows in goals (40) and points (80). To highlight how much Wingate is carrying the team right now: Molholt's 20 goals and 40 points are leading the team. Zach Parechkin, who had 115 points last season, is under a point-per-game at the moment. If the Legion are going to complete the three-peat, they may need their offensive stars to get back on track.

 

One thing is for sure, though: the Toronto Legion will make the playoffs, and that's a first step that not every back-to-back Cup winning teams can claim; and by the time the playoffs roll around, it's likely that the Legion roster will have brought in some offensive help. The team has $3,075,000 in cap space to work with, which gives them room to add to their roster. It is widely believed that the Legion and Americans have already agreed upon a trade that would send the current goal leader Edwin Reencarnacion to Toronto later in the season. The Legion have the cap space to do with without having to sacrifice any of their roster. Already in first place, a move like this would no doubt solidify Toronto as the post-season favorites.

 

Barring what would potentially have to be a monumental upset, we may be witnessing league history in this already historic 50th season.

Didn't realize the teams don't even make the playoffs or finals usually. I knew it was only the 6th time though.

 

Being the first team to ever three-peat, on the biggest season in VHL history, would be something.

Dang, Wingate is really having a historic season. How many goalies have won the MVP award? Also where did you hear that Reencarnacion rumor? That would certainly make a three peat seem like almost a done deal.
