What Will Happen to the Meute?

It’s no secret to anyone that following Season 37 that Quebec City will likely end up blowing up their roster and attempting to build through the draft after 5 seasons of competitive play in the VHL. With Pavel Koradek stepping down at the helm before the start of Season 37 and Frank Chadwick stepping in for him, we are due to see big changes in Quebec City and how their organization will fair shortly after Season 37.  Today we are going to be looking at their potential trade chips and where they will land after Season 37 comes to a close, it will certainly be an interesting off-season for teams looking to make the leap to competitors.

Niklas Valiq

Likely to reap the biggest return, Niklas Valiq is widely considered to be one of the better defenseman in the VHL and many times will be knocking down the door in order to get him to patrol their blue line for a future cup run. Valiq is a two-way defenseman that can play any role that you may need of him, for that I believe that the New York Americans will likely be the frontrunners in a bidding war for Niklas’ services for Season 38 and likely beyond. With the addition of Niklas Valiq, New York would likely become favorites to win the Continental Cup and it could see Valiq finally ending up with a Labatte Trophy on his mantel.

Potential Landing Places (NYA, DAV, & TOR)

Wesley Kellinger

After establishing himself as an elite center in the VHL, Kellinger re-upped in Quebec for Season 37. Kellinger right now is headed for free agency this off-season, but it’s evident that GM Frank Chadwick would like to get a 1 year contract with Kellinger done to allow a sign and trade with his player. However, this may be difficult as going into his 6th season next year, Kellinger may want to be able to choose where he will likely finish out the rest of his career. If Kellinger is to re-sign with the Meute, I have to believe that Riga will be the #1 team looking for his services, allowing them to make the jump into contenders in an extremely weak European Conference.  If Kellinger hits free agency, I fully expect him to sign with the New York Americans. This will give them potentially the best 1-2 punch in the VHL with Kellinger and Slaughter in the middle.

Potential Landing Places (RIG & NYA )

Tomas Valiq

Slow development hasn’t made the youngest Valiq a big name on the market, but he will likely still gain some interest if he is put out on the trade market. Valiq can be a good 2nd line center and is a playmaker who can put up big points if set up with a goal scorer. Valiq has been training extremely hard this season in an attempt to get one more Continental Cup in Quebec before he is likely shipped off this off-season. Although he has an NTC in place for next season, it is believed that was only put in place for a specific team. In terms of teams interested, Valiq could land in Davos who would like to add another dimension to their offense and Valiq could be had for relatively cheap; not to mention Valiq’s agent has deep ties with the Dynamo franchise. Riga could also be in for his services, again looking for a veteran player who could help them see improvement in the immediate future.

Potential Landing Places (RIG, DAV, & SEA)

It will be interesting to see how things unfold in Quebec with Tukio, A. Valiq, and Grigorenko all moving onto the NHL following this season. We are of course assuming that Doug Clifford will be staying put in Quebec for the time being, but perhaps he could be used as trade bait if Quebec is really looking to completely dismantle the team. Keep an eye out for Quebec this off-season, it will be very different off-season than what the Meute are used to.

Content: 3/3 - Certainly one of the flagship franchises of the VHL of the past few seasons have taken into account that the talent they have will be jumping ship sometime soon. I have faith in the new general manager that will keep them in contention, even if they're not sitting at the top of the league. Great write up.

Grammar: 2/2 - I didn't find that many mistakes. Good job!

him, for that - him. For that,

an NTC - a NTC

Appearance: 1/1 - Pretty pictures and alignment.  (Y)

Overall: 6/6

Final: 6/6
