A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away (well not really but you get the point), there was a VHLM goaltender named Cole Mertz. He and Alexander Pepper looked to be the top 2 goalies in the league, and were competing to be drafted ahead of one another. The pair had a rivalry that brought a spark of entertainment to the league and pushed the two goalies to the best of their potentials. When the draft finally came around, Pepper went just 4 spots ahead to the Helsinki Titans at 10th overall, while Mertz ended up in Davos taken 14th overall. It looked like the pair would continue their rivalry in the VHL, but Mertz just... vanished. Shortly after he was drafted Mertz dropped off the map and the elite prospect he once was resulted in getting cut from Davos' roster after a short 8 game stint in S65. So, what happened? Well, because he is me, let me tell you what happened.

1. Don't treat the VHL as a job when you're working actual jobs/schooling etc. Hell just don't treat the VHL as a job. I got burned out from trying to bang out everything I possibly could and in the end I lost all of my enjoyment. I joke about grinding out TPE but when writing articles becomes an actual grind, you've killed the appeal.

2. Recharge, you can't spend hours on VHL and not get bored or overworked. Just check for a few minutes every couple days, bang out a media spot and maybe some other stuff once a week unless you're not feeling it. The V stands for Victory but it could also stand for Virtual, lifes to short to spend every minute playing sim hockey.

3. Connect with good people. Guys like @Sonnet and @ShawnGlade kept me here as long as I stayed, and kind of made me want to come back too. I feel bad because I kind of screwed a lot of people over vanishing like that but I just couldn't do this league at that point in time. We're back now though baybee.

4. Look at the games, it's boring to just see your stats page and not have a clue about how you got where you are. The games also have some funny tidbits here and there that can help you make content. With Mertz I got a bunch of content about being a hack goalie because of all my penalties.

So take my tale as a warning, or a guide, or whatever. I don't care. I need a media spot and Jerry Wang hasn't developed enough for me to write about him so here's why I've been dead for about a year. Mertz lives on in my heart, but his times done, mostly because I missed my window to compete with Pepper so his whole character has been lost. It's okay though, one day we'll have that competition again. For now Jerry can just fill the back of Helsinki's nets with pucks, because no matter how much hardware he might have, Pepper is still a sieve.

Mertz is still considered a legend in Halifax ❤️

Considered writing a piece about the best players I've GM'd, Mertz would be included

Glad you decided to come back

I've missed you, ya beautiful bastard.

I look forward to Pepper shutting out Wang for the entirety of his career!

Yeah you wish
