Toast 887
Earlier today we found out that Victor would be stepping down as the GM of Davos. While it may not have been surprising to many, it came as a shock to me. Victor did have his reasons though and even announced that his replacement would be Molholt, someone who has definitely been showing his interest in the site over the past while. For awhile (to my knowledge) GMs have been selecting their successors as their last action with the team. What if the league were to hold apps for the GM position though? The league could see who in the league is interested and it guarantees that the best is given the opportunity that they want. The problem is that there would have to be trades made for the GM’s player and would cause hell if the change happened after trade deadline and before playoffs. Everyone on the site would get their fair chance at applying for the position instead of GMs just selecting someone from their team. While it is a nice gesture to the new general manager, there is always the chance that the member is not ready for the position. While it is easier for the league just to have someone named, applications could guarantee that the best is hired for the position, and everyone would have an opportunity if they’d like one. So, would you like to see applications for open VHL GM positions? Make sure to comment with your vote! Guest
No. Internal changes are the first step as it means trading doesn't have to happen to replace the current GM. If a GM steps down, it doesn't mean his player should be traded right away. Higgins 3,618
In rare situations when there are no active players on a team or there is no one that wants to be a GM. No, there still wouldn't be an open application though. People that are interested in being a GM could make it known to a commish and then there would be a ton of considerations to be made. (Time in league, activity, VHLM GM experience, ease of being transferred from current team to new team to be GM through a fair trade or free agency). Admin Victor 11,009 Posted June 20, 2014 Admin Share Posted June 20, 2014 We have to trust GMs that they do what is best for their franchise. Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/9333-vhl-magazine-power-poll-vhl-gm-applications/#findComment-85582 Share on other sites

diamond_ace 3,112
No. Two reasons: One, it'd be more difficult for the player to get onto the team, if he's not already on the team. Two, some GMs might be more inclined not to give the team up if there's a chance of it going to a member they either don't like or that they don't think would do well with the team, especially if the current GM is iconic enough with the team that it's become somewhat of their identity. Example: me with Ottawa (we're discussing VHL teams, but the example still applies). I had a handful of people in mind, one of these people applied, and they got the job (I believe I had some influence in that happening). Now, in hindsight, Munk screwed it up, and since I was synonymous with Ottawa for the longest time (having left them a ton of draft picks) I felt personally disappointed in the performance of the team even though I technically had no position with them. It would be similar with if I stepped down from Calgary, I'd want someone in there who I was confident could do the job, or I'd feel like I personally let the franchise down even without still being the GM.
